How about a Regrowth variant? I am thinking along the lines of a card that allows you to return a card with CMC x or maybe x or less. Nostalgic Dreams was part of a cycle, so could this be reasonable?
Reasonable, and it'd see play; but sadly if it's X, not X or less, then it'd be pretty useless...
1. It's not speculation if you know it's wrong.
2. Name 1 card (outside of disiciple, a colored 1 toughness creature from a set BEFORE affinity was broken) in affinity that's "overpowered"? Trading artifacts for +1,+1 counters? I don't see you playing the green thing that gave 1 +1,+1 counter or 1 card, do I?
3. Meltdown can hit multiple objects, destroy multiple cards. None of the others can do that. ANd you want it to do it for free. Ditch a BOP, destroy all artifact lands, all spellbombs, all welding jars, all chrome moxes, etc? Bull.
Oh so we are allowed to speculate that it will drop a 7/7 into play on turn one or do something horribly underpowered, but not a meltdown variant? What about if it destroyed all artifacts with CMC=X, that way you cant hit artifact lands.

I figured if such a card saw print it would be 'equal to x' and not 'x or less' because:
1. as you said, it makes the card pretty useless, kind of like the counterspell, and 'free' cards shouldn't be insane
2. it keeps with what we know about the other ones so far; that being that the cards are equal to x
I do agree with you though, I would like to see such a card be x or less... I just don't think it would happen
I honestly think that it might be land search, but only into your hand. The main reason I figure this, is because first of all, it's not innately broken. Sure, it thins out your deck and stabilizes you MUCH more, but ultimately, if you do a huge one first turn, you'll have to discard, and it also doesn't help you a whole lot. It's a strong ability, but not overpowered.
But then again, maybe R&D messed up again, and made it "Return up to X cards from your graveyard to your hand..." BLEH!
Things it won't be; anything that's an almost instant win, IE. put X 1/1's into play, put a X/X into play or put a X cost into play. a pump spell like +X/+X because reds already done that. anything that gives card advantage, IE. return X cards from your graveyard, search for X lands/creatures or destroy X whatever.
Possibilities; gain X life(probably too white), prevent all damage from X attacking creatures, search your library for a creature costing X, turn X lands into ?/? creatures, return target card which cost X from your graveyard.
My personal belief is that it'll be either the animate land or the fog version.
I do think that searching for lands is possible, since even though you gain cards out of it, the cards themselves aren't incredibly powerful (assuming you can only search for basic). You'd be filling up your hand with land, and not being able to play it all immediately makes it somewhat cluttering.

"Target land becomes an X/X creature until end of turn"
or
"X Target lands become 1/1 (or maybe 2/2) creatures until end of turn"
or
"Search your library for a creature card with converted mana cost X (or less?), reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle your library"
or
"Look at the top X cards of your library and choose a creature card from them. Reveal it, and put that card into your hand. Then put the remaining cards on the bottom of your library in any order."
or
"(up to) X target creatures get +1/+1 until end of turn"
or
"Put a +1/+1 counter on each of (up to) X creatures"
or
"Return a (spirit or arcane?) card with a converted mana cost X (or less) from your graveyard to your hand"
or
"Put (up to) X (spirit or arcane?) cards from your graveyard on top of your library"
Really I have no idea. But most of these could have their uses.

Well, it's life gain... and not ever targeted lifegain at that! (If it were, a false cure deck packing draco might actually feasible) Very disappointing. The only redeeming feature of the card is probably the art.

Seismic Assault for t3h win!!!1
Not really. Life gain by itself is never really good (unless you can do it over and over) and beside, it doesn't win games on its own either.

It just screams life to me. I mean, we just recently had nourish.
