Here's what I can tell you: the “kanji magic” that Toshi displays in the Champions of Kamigawa novel is definitely reflected in his card powers. He's no slouch in combat, and under the right conditions his kanji magic kicks in, vaguely mimicking an ability that players knew and loved when it was printed as… Well, I'll let Adrian tell you that. And as I said before, he's the first Magic protagonist to be represented by a mono-black card. In the meantime, here's his art to whet your appetite.
Speculate!!
Which mechanic did Rei meant? Hmmmmmm.
Edit: I didnt see the other Toshi thread. Whoops. My bad.
i can only say this... the kanji magic was the coolest part of that book. it made the horrible writing style worth wading through in order to get to more flavor... i'm praying that the kanji effect is cool.
I wouldn't be surprised if he looked something like:
Toshi Umezawa :3mana::symb::symb:
Legendary Creature- Human Rogue?
Whenever an Arcane card is played, you may pay 3 life to copy that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy.
3/3
This captures the essence of his magic, often using natural symbols to pull it out (Kami, thus the Arcane trigger). Also, he has been known to sketck the Kanji into his own skin, thus the life loss payment (and thus the black flavor). 3/3 is good for combat, and fair for a 5cc black legend

Some wonder why I carry 8 decks on me. The answer? I get tired of being boarded against in casual games, and 90% of the players I meet can't beat a jank deck I made to be tokens for a serious one.
If he is Mirari for Arcane, it will have to be very expensive in either mana or life. If its just the suggested 3 life, him + Lava Spike and a currently higher life total than your opponent = you win.
Other possibilities: Its something we've seen (at least similarly) before, and probably something fairly big. My top 3 guesses would be variants on Necro, Dreamhalls, or Yawgmoth's Will, with some conditional trigger as to when and how you can use the ability.
if he was a forker for arcane spells, it would simply have to be worded as such.
"whenever an arcane spell is played, you may pay x, if you do, put a copy of that spell on the stack and choose new targets"
he can only copy a spell once, because his ability only triggers one, and he cannot copy his copied spells, because they weren't played. i think it's too powerful though
If I remember the book, didn't Toshi use reflective magic a lot? So a card could reasonably have as an ability that allows damage dealt to Toshi to be redirected to the source for a certain cost, be it life or mana.
It won't be Fork. As has been mentioned, we have Uyo.
Sideswipe would be so incredibly boring for a legendary character (and a main character at that), and is pretty firmly planted on blue creatures (Quicksilver Dragon, etc).
Its also being compared to one of the best black cards of all time in T1, which strengthens my belief that it will either be a Necro or Will variant.
what if he has a built in yawgmoths will:D:D:D
you may play cards from your graveyard as though they were in your hand. and then RFG
that would be neat...but unfortunately it most likely wont be. i dont think it will be necro either....
it says it will VAGUELY mimic. meaning it will remind players of the old ability, it wont BE the old ability. also, it says under the right conditions, the magic KICKS in. and hes no slouch in combat. so i doubt he would be just 3/3 vanilla. he would have to have some other form of combat prowess.
If it is a YW, it'd only be for arcane cards... which would rock the hard one. It might even be relatively cheap, because arcane cards generally suck; and giving them all flashback" wouldn't really help, would it?
Maybe he lets you play splice from your graveyard (removing the card from the game as part of the ability). Which would be very Flashback-y, and seems a little too broad for "the right conditions."
edit: After reading more of the other thread, and particularily the tidbit from R_E's source(it being similar to what many feel is most powerful black type 1 card ever), and from all the other discussion, I'm going to jump on the "will variant" bandwagon and toss out this:
Toshiro Umezawa 3BB
Legendary Creature-something
Pay X life: Until end of turn, you may play target card in your graveyard with converted mana cost X as though it were in your hand without paying its mana cost. (If it has X in its mana cost, X is 0.) If you do, remove that card from the game.
3/3
That kind of goes along with all the info out there so far, while remaining somewhat balanced, heh.
that's not what happened at all. kamahl stabbed phage, akroma, and some old lady and they became korona. then korona got stabbed by her "prophets" and kamahl got drunk with a mutant centaur

Toshiro Umezawa 3BB
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard
Whenever a creature enchantment you control is put into a graveyard from play, return it to owner's hand.
BB, T: Destroy target enchanted creature.
3/1
i know the enchantment recursion is probably out of flavor, but its not impossible...
