I did some searching on the us patent office website yesterday to see if I could find any names that might give away next fall's set-khans block was filed about a year in advance- but I couldn't find anything. A search of wizards of the coast turned up nothing while a search if Hasbro was successful but I saw no names. Is there another way to search?
A patent is an exclusive right to make or use some new invention. Wizards doesn't patent every single new set or block that comes out. At least as far as I know. What would be the novelty?
There is in fact a patent for Magic when it first came out. The patent is 5662332, inventor of course is Richard Channing Garfield. But other than that, new set aren't considered new inventions.
If you want to find out new names for an upcoming block, you might find something registered as a trademark, not a patent.
