"Playmat not guaranteed at [Basic GP Registration] level. Playmats will be distributed for specific events as well as prizes for some events." - http://tjcollect.com/event/525
It's bogus that wotc allows TJ Collectables to be this greedy. Those playmate are for participation not prize support so you can make a few more dollars. I wanted to go to this GP but I really don't want to support this kind of bs. I will be going to Jersey knowing with confidence that I will get the mat because SCG is a decent company.

Playmats for preregistration are a fairly new thing. You used to only be able to get playmats by paying for them or winning a side event. They have been using them recently to increase numbers at GPs. It is no longer needed since the GP is a brand in itself and playmat or no you are probably going to have a large turnout. I agree with playmats going back to being a prize for side events. Probably should be top 8 of a side event gets one or you can buy it from the vendor if you want one. The trouble GPs have now is keeping people at the event after they have dropped from the main event, shuffling the playmats as prizes to these events will help correct this problem. The TOs need to make money and the bulk of that will come from side events, which requires more people staying. Anyways you are already getting handed a $20 promo just for playing in the event. The freebies are just getting shuffled to what the TO wants to increase support to. Nothing wrong with that and it is done all the time in the rest of the business community.

And thus marks the first and last time anyone on salvation ever called SCG a decent company. Anyway free market and they do look pretty sweet.

That's simply not true, I've defended SCG and praised them multiple times. Many people do it all the time, quit making SCG out to be the bad guy.

I've heard nothing but good things about SCG from people who have actually done business with them, and when I had issues with the billing of my premium account their customer service was top notch. They were friendly, and fixed it fast. Their content is usually pretty good, they provide a huge benefit to the magic community by holding opens nearly every weekend. SCG isn't just decent, they rock.
If everyone hated SCG how would they still be in business? Their service is top notch. Their open series is fantastic. They typically have everything in stock/you don't have to order from multiple sites/wait for multiple packages. I've never had a problem with SCG.
As for keeping people around after dropping from the main event? Ummmm I'm sure you'll find something to occupy your time, it's a GP/there are thousands of people there/stuff is happening. Unsure how giving playmats as prizes at side events makes people stay for side events either. If I enter a side event, it isn't to win a playmat. It's to win ABUR dual lands, boxes of product, or pieces of cardboard. Not a playmat.

Some people collect playmats and would play in events for those. Some people want power. Some people want sealed product. Some people just want to play. Not everyone wants the same thing. I personally am going to a GP to sit and trade for 3 days. The only reason I would join the main event is to pick up my promo and playmat and then drop after round 1 because it is worth the money to do that. If you moved playmats to side events I might be more inclined to join a side event or 2. If moving playmats to a side event as a prize increased each side event by 2 people, that would be a decent sized increase over the weekend. Also not everyone sticks around after the main event. I know plenty of people who play in the main event, drop and then leave because there is nothing that interests them in those side events. I do have some friends who would play in side events just for the chance at a playmat because they collect them. ABUR lands don't interest them, nor does sealed product. Different strokes for different folks. Increase variety in prizes will increase the number of interested people.

Agreee with rxavage. Should be for attending, not prize support. Are GP's game days now or something?
