"Friends" block is called Theros.

As evidenced by this search of trademarks filed by Wizards of the Coast.

Note that Theros is registered four times; this is for the analog and digital editions of the game, similar to the four filings for "Return to Ravnica" and the three for "Avacyn Restored". The filings then become consolidated after a certain period of time.

    Speculate away!

EDIT: And before you say "B-B-BUT THIS COULD BE FOR ANYTHING", this is literally how we found out the name of Innistrad and Dark Ascension before WOTC had ever announced either of them.

The name suggest more an ancient greek than roman name though.

Theros = Theros Ironsomething, a blacksmith from Dragonlance Chronicles. Dragonlance was owned by TSR and purchased by WOTC. Krynn is a rustic setting. Lorwyn is a rustic setting. Theros = return to Lorwyn? Can't be New Phyrexia this soon.

I'm kind of hoping that we would be making a trip to the plane that started it all. That would be Dominaria for all you newcomers.

After Ravnica we did travel back to Dominaria. Are we due? Man, that would make me happy. NO MORE LLORWYN... that was the reason I left in the 1st place lol!

Two predictions that should be uncontroversial, but apparently aren't:

-They will not do two "return"/nostalgia blocks right after the other. It waters down the marketability and doesn't fit with the ebb and flow MaRo is so fond of describing.
-They will never allow the code name to reflect the thematic content of the set. They could well do a Rome-themed set, but they would go out of their way not to make the code name hint at it.

B-B-BUT WE ALREADY KNOW THISS lol

-os is usually Greek, -us is usually Roman. As for it being a new set, I would looove a Greek/Roman themed set but remember when we first saw Zendikar and even had the logo for it? A lot of us thought dinosaurs & cavemen, aztecs, pirates, indiana jones styled, etc.

I'd rather wait to hear about it before being wrong every single time about what it could be theme-wise. Theros could be a name for anything, Greek/Latin styled names are also generic in any fantasy.

Since people always use this argument that codenames have nothing to do with the set, maybe this time Wizards will be one step ahead and do the opposite, since no one expects it Grin

Maybe it's just me, but I really don't find Dominaria all that interesting. It's all the earliest Magic flavor smashed together into a single plane. Maybe that's more realistic than the more "single-theme" planes, but as a fictional setting it lacks unity and coherence. I'd rather keep visiting new worlds that have a more unified purpose behind their creation, and/or revisiting successful planes in that vein like Zendikar or Alara.

Theros definitely sounds like it could be a Greco-Roman inspired world, which is one of the themes I've been waiting for Magic to explore for quite a while now. Here's hoping I'm not disappointed. Smile

Wasn't Dominaria a super-plane that had many planets in it? We could see a setting on a planet with a totally different story... I mean couldn't Theros have a chance of being a planet in Dominaria?

So what you're saying is that the set will be full of Spanish Inquisitions?

Theros isn't much to go with right now, to me it's so general it could be just about anything. It doesn't guarantee a Greco-Roman set at all, but may hint at some inspirations from that period.

    Guys, False Alarm.

It's not about MtG, it's about WOTC's other hot property: D&D. There's a Dragonlance character named Theros Ironfield and even a Dragonlance novel with his name. If anything it means that Dragonlance will be part of the upcoming D&D 5th edition.

No, Dominaria is just the center of the multiverse.

That doesn't quite settle things, since it seems doubtful that they'd register 4 marks — in the categories used for MTG — for some random D&D character.

What about a volcanic greek mythology inspired plane? o.O :p

No, that would be Rabiah, silly. Grin I guess Dominaria retroactively got a few references in Alpha, but so did Serra's Realm.

Also, I have to agree with Luminum Can here; Dominaria is kinda boring because it's spent. The only really cool settings in Dominaria were Otaria, Jamuraa, and Sarpadia; Otaria is out of juice after two whole blocks, Return to Jamuraa was awful, and Sarpadia is currently uninhabitable by anything other than thrulls and mushrooms.

There are many planes with multiple planets. A plane can be anything from a single metal sphere (Argentum) to a giant flat expanse (Lorwyn), to a functioning universe (Dominaria).

Just throwing this out there, but if this is actually the set name, it would probably also be the plane name. Since Lorwyn, the first set in the block has contained the actual planes name in it (and if you ignore Time spiral, it goes back to mirrodin). Either they are no longer following that trend or we may be going to the plane of Theros.
