Am I the only one who noticed that the elf woman at the bottom left looks kind of deformed? I understand that artists often exaggerate the female form to make it more attractive, but, like, her legs don't match up with her hips. And she also looks like she has some pretty bad flounder-boob.
Also, I am disappointed to see that the Angel of Despair apparently became an "escort" in her later years.
My girlfriend is sadly not offended by the playmat. Her exact response looking at it was "Those chicks are hot".
What would be a stellar slap in Chase's face would be for them to give out a blank white playmat as the GP Promo - then have a table that lets people trade them in for the "unsanctioned" one. If they've been printed - they'll be for sale - somewhere.
WELL good job WotC, now I want one just to have a banned playmat. My interest in this literally went from "not giving a single ****" to "probably willing to fork over ridiculous amounts of money to get my hands on one".
What's actually the real tragedy is that people find 3 women consensually submitting to a goblin more offensive than other works that depict the torture and mutilation of human beings. And again, earthbind
welcome back to the 1950s folks, where married couples sleep in separate beds and Elvis is king. seriously, this is some of the tamest "risque" and "sexist" art i've ever seen. no cooch, gooch, tits, or butt crack.
some people really need to get the stick from out their ass.
I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.

I think it's pretty clear that Earthbind would never be printed today.
There are worse depictions of women on actual printed magic cards. It's the hypocrisy that annoys me.
The real hypocrisy comes from the fact that no one would be batting an eye toward the art if it were all males instead. Our society is just fine with appreciating the male body, but when it's a female's figure? HOLY **** STOP THE PRESS!
And the fact that we don't care about violence, blood, gore, and murder is also hypocritical in of itself. That's just fine, but seeing boobs and curves = bad? Ugh.
While I understand the concern Wizards would (and should), have with a portrayal of 'submissive' women, it comes off... I'm loathe to say hypocritical, but at the very least disingenuous.
Earthbind is an old example, I'll grant you that. But look at Praetor's Grasp printed just last year. Can Wizards say that doesn't express some level of submission? It may not be as overtly sexual as the playmat, but a damsel is quite clearly in distress.
I guess what I'm saying is that if you're going to draw a line, make sure you haven't already crossed it.

Once again, it wasn't about being sexy. It was about being sexist.
If you can show me equivalent Magic-related art, widely accepted by the community, that shows men in "submissive" poses like these, maybe I'll agree that there is some kind of double standard going on.
To me it looks more like WoW art than MtG anyway. I think the point thats being missed is that its what the women are doing as opposed to how theyre dressed. they look like the goblins their pimp and thats not an image wotc wants to support.

I don't know if you understand what submission (or, to use the proper terminology, sexually receptive behavior) is, but merely being under attack, unconscious, or dead isn't it.
If the context of the card showed that mr. purple skin had deliberately gone to the plague witch for a session of magical masochism, then it would be similar.

Pretty much this right here...I wouldn't use this thing even if i had it. If I wanted to use a "sexy" play mat (which I want to, but don't because i can't find a good one), I certainly wouldn't consider this one. This might be risque to my parents who are pushing 60.
If you have to go back to cards that have the old frame to make your point about a stance Wizards currently has then you are doing it wrong.
I'm afraid I have to diasgree with you. If Wizards is going to put a foot forward against art they consider in bad taste, people have every right to challenge that stance.
As I said before, I don't think they're out of line on the issue. It just sounds a little hollow.
So it's totally okay for Dack Fayden to be making chicas swoon like some romance cover novel while stealing their ****, but when a goblin is shown pleasing a lot of the ladies (look at dat greatsword...no, the other greatsword) ist verboten?
I'm callin' Wizards out. Gatdam human supremacists. Always keepin' the green man down. It's not just enough to put out stereotypes of them being dumb, and then offscreen kill the token smart goblin, but now they can't get any lovin'? Harsh.
I honestly do not care about the attire. I do not mind the sexual nature of it. To me, it is basically screaming these are whores and that to me, is a bit inappropriate for a card game. If this was the cover for a porno or some fan drawing (or even a custom made mat), I would say, "Not my tastes, but whatever." However, this is a playmat to be given out at a premier event is a little inappropriate.
Wizards is the company that is attached to the GP. They do not want their image to be "tainted" or hurt by this artwork which is controversial at the very least. They have the right to do this and personally, I think it was the right decision.

DUDE! That one's way crazy! They printed THAT, and they're offended about THIS? WTF people....
Aye, that playmat's image does look pretty contrived (in addition to objectifying women). I'll be glad to receive one when I hopefully participate in Indianapolis, but I'll be sticking with my comparatively "bland" GP Minneapolis 2005 mat if that one does indeed get sent out (which it likely won't).

And again, your rebuttal is a card that was printed almost 20 years ago? Earthbind would never see the light of day if that art was submitted today. Besides what are you even saying, if they deny this playmat, then they should recall every Earthbind and burn them?
The WotC of today has every right to control the brand how they see fit. Besides showing submissive soft core porn does nothing to further their brand nor does it have anything to do with Magic. The sooner everyone realizes that objectifying women is wrong the sooner we can encorage more women to join us for a game of Magic. Can you blame them for perpetuating this 90/10 split if they are commonly faced with people in the community sticking up for this trash?

I was thinking it was Fallen Angel
Objectification is often inoffensive when one is regularly not being objectified but rather objectifying.
