Basically WotC is putting out it's own official life counter and magic utility app. Apparently the initial DL is free, subsequent updates cost a "small fee".
Was there a release date in the article I missed? Because I'm not seeing it on the Android Market.

The Magic: The Gathering Toolbox app will come out for iOS devices later this month, and a bit after that on Android. Keep watching the skies! Or, if that seems impractical, watch @wizards_magic on Twitter and like Magic: The Gathering on Facebook!

Their access to information (and the implementation thereof) make them seem really anticompetitive in releasing this app. As developer for a life tracker app, it seems pointless to even considering competing in this market anymore considering how much of a leg up Magic: the Gathering Toolbox has. Access to stores, events, and a considerable advantage in getting updates for their card search tool delivered. Thanks, WotC, thanks.
I guess the rest of you will be satisfied, so I suppose as long as the majority wins...
Have any iPad/iPhone users messed around with the app that SCG put out? They are supposed to come out with a droid version? This is interesting that Wizards is finally jumping on the ap-wagon. But of course, just a bit behind the curve. The ability to make a deck and draw a mock hand is pretty nice. But paying to update the deck creation feature of the app definitely made my eyes roll. Great idea overall, but we shall see how things go...

So rise to the challenge and offer something that WOTC dont? Give the consumer things that they want that WOTC cannot/will not offer. Present it in a fashion that WOTC dont. Maybe focus your own application on a different type of gamer (more competitive? netdecks?)
It really just seems to me that you're complaining over the fact WOTC is giving the community what they want and giving you some competition, yet you're complaining that by releasing something they're being anticompetitive?
One of the more interesting uses of this might not even be for us. Through "anonymous user statistics" wizards will be able to see which cards and strategies are popular and implement that into future sets and card designs.

Lycanthropy Awareness Day.
Hoping for a cure, or at least an outbreak.
Can't wait for this! My current mtg app requires $10 to do multiple decks and this seems to do that for free and only costs for new sets. If it's like $.99 a set that'd be great! It'd be awesome if it were really stable and didn't bug out on me like mine does often. Hopefully we can share the decks here somehow when they are created through the app and the hopefully they use multiflow for the deck in some way.

I can find magic stores when I'm on the go now, too, which is nice.

Sounds great and it also looks good.
Really though, a free high-quality app with all that functionality is top-notch. Most similar apps I've seen other people use don't do nearly as much.

I may have missed it, but did they say it was free? I know it said you have to pay to update the deck editor at a minimum.

Very first paragraph. "And it's FREE!" Updating the deckbuilder portion of the app with new cards is the only thing that mentions any sort of charge.
