I hate how they do this now. Give us cool previews for a couple weeks and then dump 70+ cards in a day? Not saying I won't be refreshing at 9 on Sunday, but I'd prefer a slow trickle than hunting down the new cards in the image gallery.
However, in today's culture of Justin Bieber, Jersey Shore, and Twilight, where every song on the radio, every program on television and every site on the internet is just another monument to the pinnacle of human stupidity, it's certainly not the worst thing that people could be watching.
I wonder how different the prerelease would be if they didn't spoil any cards, just ideas or parts. It would be a lot more exciting probably, and you'd really have to think things through more. I think that'd be neat. Obviously I don't have to look at the spoilers, it's really hard not to (and a disadvantage).

Yeah I remember the pre-releases of old especially Prophecy. Things were way different before the internet. Being an information junkie I can't get enough of the spoilers. It was a different time when every card was new, you would only the cards from the set you actually saw and you had to wait for an Inquest magazine to see the whole set.

There were spoiler lists out before Urza block, used to wait for that lovely text doc before heading out to Orlando for the Pre-releases back when they were a huge event.

That's close to how they tried to do things in the past. A few official previews, then that's it until the set is officially spoiled the Monday after the prerelease.
The problem was that stuff leaked out. The set contents isn't a secret which can be kept until prerelease day, as, at the very least, they have to ship the cards to the prerelease TOs.
So they've changed how they've done things over the years. I think this current trend of releasing the full spoiler the Monday before the prerelease is a consequence of the New Phyrexia godbook leak. I think they learned from that incident that people like having the entire set to look at for more than a day or two before the prerelease.

Mtgnews.com spoiled the full set of prophecy well before the pre-release.
I remember a friend showing me the full spoiler for Urzas Saga just before the pre-release and he got it from the internet I assure you lol.
So getting internet spoilers for a set is not a modern thing.
Having WotC confirm the entire set before the pre-release though is a modern thing.
This is a nice new trend I think. Helps squash "rumormongers" and helps WOTC do what they want in terms of slow spoiling without keeping those who want to preorder waiting.

I live in a rural area of North Florida. The last place I lived still doesn't have access to DSL internet; it's dial-up or spotty satellite. So the experience was limited to my friends and I, but yeah that's how we did it.
The reason that Wizards posts the spoilers is so that there is an even playing field.
Store owners and their buddies will already have cracked packs and gone over it.
Others also have access.
Now anyone chooses to can have access before the pre-release, though I know many who refuse to look at any spoilers until after the event.
I sure as hell couldn't do it, I would spend too much time sitting there reading and gushing and have no time to construct.

That would be perfectly fine and kind of cool if the prerelease weren't a sanctioned tournament. It doesn't matter as much now, but it was a huge deal under the ELO ranking system and probably actively discouraged ranked players from ever going out and enjoying one. As a sanctioned tournament, though, it's kind of unfair to make it so people can't practice and strategise before the event.

Ones I know who refuse to look at spoilers tend to not do well....can't anticipate what you don't know...fun or not, who likes wasting money on a loss?

On the flip, I've been on this site since the begining and have participated in every spoiler season since Fifth Dawn. I've lost HORRIBLY at prereleases in my time.
But yes, there have been plenty of times when we've had full spoilers almost a month before release... Scrye published one by "accident" one year... that season sucked. We were really bored talking about the cards by the time prerelease came along...

Well, like you said: because the event is fun. It's fun, you get the cards early, you get a promo, and you get to play magic in a more casual tournament setting. If they're going into it fresh, then they probably aren't going into it with the express purpose of winning.
To be quite honest, winning the day is not the reason I look forward to and enter into prereleases. Sure, I try to win. It's not like I don't put my best foot forward in te attempt. The main reason i go is just to get the cards early and have fun with friends. I like the environment. I don't feel like I wasted money if I don't win.
Damn, my brain might not be able to handle that..I love this set too much already, and once I get to see the commons/uncommons for Limited purposes? Good times.
I once farted during the final match for prizes at an FNM. It was a tense moment, everything was quiet, control vs control, I was about to mana leak, thought about it.. and farted. Then mana leaked.

People would care less about week 3 of previews then they do for weeks 1 and 2. They want to control the spoiler release and their current strategy for doing so involves giving the whole list before early opened product completes the spoiler.

They have to consider the balance between the Law of Diminishing Returns versus the Paradox of Choice/Overabundance.
