Wow that sucks. I guess shocklands wont be coming back any time soon.
Why in the world would that be at all related to shocklands coming back. Shocklands were explicitly printed without guild names so that they would not be tied to ravnica, but could be reprinted in any appropriate set.
The return of Ravnic would not necessarily mean the return of shocklands.
The lack of a return to Ravnica does not necessarily mean the lack of a return of the shocklands.
I have a question for both of you: why, under any circumstances, would Rav2 be multicolored?
Because it's set on Ravnica. That is the entirety of the reason. There is practically no statement about future Magic sets I would feel more absolutely certain about than this: if there is a second Ravnica set, it will be heavily multicolored (even if not technically "gold-themed.")
Storyline exists solely as a branding tool in Magic, and is entirely subordinate to more important branding elements (like ensuring that each plane has a distinct and memorable "hook" that can be used to sell sets featuring that plane.) In this case, the hook for Ravnica is multicolored cards, and the act of returning to Ravnica is equivalent to returning to gold, just like returning to Mirrodin was equivalent to returning to tons of artifacts.
I'm still confused about getting word on Dack Fayden and Ral Zarek, who both seem so obviously Ravnican. The backgrounds for their art even looks like Ravnica...

Dack isn't from Ravnica. He IS currently hanging his hat there, but then again, so is Jace.
Ral IS from Ravnica.
We need a new Mercadian Masques block, that's what we need
Rebels vs Mercenaries ftw.
Except mercenaries were printed as an afterthought and, as someone who read the block books, I can tell you now they had almost no story element.
That being said, I love Mercadia's "merchant" elements. Mongers. Spellshapers. Hell, even Rhystic cards, rebels and mercenaries all fall in this merchant sub-category. They were just, with the exception of rebels, vastly under-powered. Now spellshapers that didn't just emulate spells but, as would be balanced by the fact they have toughness and summoning sickness, were stronger than the original spells or emulated some of the strongest spells in the game...
That being said, Rhystic would have been an interesting mechanic if there were cards like Rhystic Lightning as a 2 drop and not like Rhystic Syphon at *any* mana cost (honestly, the Syphon should at least drain 3 even if they pay...and even then should cost one or two less mana to cast).
Unfortunately, the big problem with a merchant theme in Magic is that economics rely on investing time and bargaining (usually by giving choices): two things that are almost always frowned upon in competitive Magic as they are (a) risky and/or (b) give the opponent choices (which is worse for most than coin flipping!).*
*Now I personally enjoy coin flipping, giving difficult choices, bargaining with an opponent (even in 1v1) and bluffing...but people who play at the highest level of skill in formats with limited card pools can usually call the bluff or, more often than not, would rather not take the risks involved either way (i.e. they oftentimes just IGNORE the bluff).
Because that's what people loved about Ravnica. Why wouldn't you do a throwback to the original? That's the entire point. I'd expect a new Rav set to focus on the reforming of the guilds or some similar system.
So couldnt the new guilds or something like that be formed wedge colors as someone said before . Instead of something alara did with say BRG. It could be WRB

I would love that, and it would give us more cards to use for wedge colored edh generals they just printed.
That would be awesome, but I don't think they would do that so soon after alara. If/when we do return to ravnica, I think that would be a great way to explain a multicolor theme without just reverting back to the guilds, which, as pointed out, don't exist anymore.
You know the card is good when 1/3 of the people say its underpowered, 1/3 say its just right, and the other 1/3 say its overpowered.

I don't think a return to Ravnica would be a return to Gold as the major theme. Ravnica is Gold, that much is certain since it was designed with that in mind. Ravnica was a return to gold, and it accomplished that very well. but now that gold has been rather consistently woven into standard at all times, Ravnica doesn't have that angle anymore.
So, I think that Ravnica would capitalize on it's crowded-city theme more directly in card mechanics. If the planeswalkers are all gathering in Rav, then a theme of uniting against a common enemy could be intuitive. (there's that cult that promises to be an enemy isn't there?)
Alara experimented with Hybrid + color mana costs. Different Hybrid + Hybrid; like (B/G)(R/W), has not been explored.
What I could say for certain is that Rav 2.0 will certainly encourage multi-color play, without multi-color as the draw in of itself.
This would have almost guaranteed shock land reprints which would reduce the entry cost for modern which in turn would actually save the format. I guess we can hope for a core set reprint, because I doubt it will be done in an expansion set that isn't a return to rav...not saying it doesn't make since that they wouldn't do it, just a gut feeling.

And having done the Scars of Mirrodin block, if they do eventually revisit Ravnica in an expansion they have better information about what works and what doesn't when revisiting a setting like that.

actually you forgot that it came on the heels of kami which came right after mirodin which until last year was the only standard to have cards banned.(it is still the only one to have any cards banned for block although jace might have been if block was still a supported format)

I'm gonna go ahead and be that guy and point out the "they'll never change the card backing" etc. statements that people like making, and that are inevitably reminded that in life, and especially in profit motivated tcg's, there are no absolutes.

i am a bit confused about why everyone seems to think a return to ravnica means a reprint of shocks. 10 rares is quite a bit of commitment for a non reprint set. core is much more likely since the changes in 2010 and on. its less beginner and more intermediate than it once was.
