I really like the design of this card. Reminds me of Cycling lands, except better. For a graveyard-themed set coming up, this makes a lot of sense.
As for the card itself, to have an uncounterable 4 mana counterspell is very good. Have it attached to a land is just icing on the cake. I am excited to see how they will make it "better".

Take a mechanic from the pre-mirrodin era, and a mechanic after the mirrodin era, and create a card that flavorfully melds both mechanics.
Some of you may think that you have made great mistakes in your lives, and perhaps you have. But let me ask you this.... did you ever play strip poker with two fat chicks and win?
Heres to hoping that this card is not a rare and will be good card. The first card was pretty good. EDH and standard might like it. I hope the newer version is just great and is balanced and better than the original
Am i the only one that thinks "for the better" meant they nerfed the card because it was too good? : >
Probably made it legendary, cost 5-6 mana to counter something, and allows the other player to do something in order to negate that counter like paying X life or mana.
I love people that don't even bother to type punctuation signs.
About the card, I think it will contain a the new innistrad mechanic, related to the graveyard.
Can someone on Twitter please ask MaRo whether the invitational card is actually based on Denying Channel or on Tiago's SECOND submitted card as described in this thread?

On topic, Im pretty glad the card wasn't printed as is, that card is way too good. I hope it's on a crappy creature instead, maybe a 2/2 for 3 or something like that.

This guy, would either eat up several turns worth of mana to get a slow permanent that relies on your already have some board presence (after wasting said mana), or dies without generating any advantage.
I'd rather it tapped for U and EtBt. Also wish it cost UUU instead of 2UU to discard, since that would make it better in certain decks, but harder to splash in most decks, and would also give you incentive to play it as a land in decks that aren't heavy blue instead of hoarding several in your hand.
Why should other decks besides mono blue be able to counter spells? I think the card is great as shown.

Hopefully they just reduced the cost of the activated ability to 1UU. That would be sweet; but yeah, at least they're finally releasing the card it's only been awaited for for about 4 years now. Wonder what has changed. And having his face on a land card...that would be tricky but it can be done.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
Changing it for the better ≠ making the card better. The card was blatantly overpowered for most standard formats, which is too bad because it's a card I'd have loved to play with.
Interesting, a land which doubles as a counter spell, it looks great to me. If you think about it, since this is an ability it basically cannot be countered except for Stifle. If they improve it I think it would add blue to the mana pool, lowering the cost would do as well, but it would basically be an even better than Cancel.
#1 - What's the dumbest idea you ever had?
#2 - 15/15 for 15?
#1 - Make it dumber
#2 - Give it protection from removal and counter?
#1 - DUMBER!
#2 - Add Timewalk?
#1 - DAMN IT MAN, I SAID DUMB!! DUMB !!!
#2 - It destroys everything when it attacks.... And wait, I have a friend who plays mill decks... I want to beat him too.
#1 - Excellent! Recess is over, go back and learn sex-ed with the other 6th graders.
I wouldn't expect to see threshold again, it's been used as an example of "what not to do" with regard to mechanics that toggle between two states. It requires you to constantly be counting something that you don't naturally keep track of. That's interesting in some ways but the tedium of constantly counting the cards in your graveyard can be more trouble than its worth.
I certainly wasn't saying I expected it to come back, but that I thought the card would have a conditional tied to a graveyard. Threshold is the most blatant variation we have.
On a slightly unrelated note, I remember (though possibly faultily) at the time that MaRo said that Threshold should have been "Threshold 7" so that the mechanic could be varied, but then more recently, that sort of notion was reversed due to the obvious problems with keeping track of which effects were on and which weren't. Do you remember anything sort of reversal on the issue?
Why are we still speculating about the land? Hasn't it already been established that its not going to be related to his original card? Most invitational cards submitted are totally different from the one printed. I always assumed that the things they submit are just jokes and they come up with a real one sometime after they win. Even if they are serious, most cards submitted are overpowered and need to be completely changed anyways.
Someone already said something about it being a creature. With Innistrad speculated to be a graveyard matters set; I would start there. It's also possible that it has nothing to do with the block mechanics.
There's really no question about it. The "drawback" is pitiful compared to the reward. It's a land drop in the early game and another control spell in the late game. That's broken at 4 mana. The only way not to make this completely broken would be to completely gut all other control elements in standard.

And it would completely break standard. And modern. And probably Legacy control. It'd probably see some Vintage play too.
While I admit a Cancel that can be an early land drop is good, calling it broken or format changing is far fetched. It's still just cancel, which sees little to any play anywhere.

No, it isn't cancel, and it isn't far fetched at all.
It has almost no opportunity cost... it takes up land slots in your deck.
That's a night and day difference. Do you really think a player as good as Chan would design a card that was mediocre or unplayable?
Chan understands that these would essentially be 4 counterspells that didn't take up extra slots in your deck, and didn't put you at much risk to play in mana slots.
To think that this card wouldn't be format defining is pure lack of experience.

I'm sorry but at 4 mana it's just a very playable hard counter. Something we haven't had since rewind. Yes it means you can have 36 actual cards and 24 lands, 4 of which are also counterspells. Yes, that's good. No, it's not format defining because it still costs 4 mana to counter a spell, which is fair.
