I'm pretty sure it'll be a Judge Promo within a year.
Ugh, I hope not. Vindicate and Vendilion Clique are nearly four times as much as their regular counterparts, I can't even imagine what price tag the Judge Forces are going to demand.
I feel like they ought to just confront the fact that legacy is becoming so popular and try to find ways to support it. A lot of important legacy cards like FoW are actually not on the reserve list and could be reduced in cost without breaking any promises.
Wrote a blog post on this that's way, way too long to copy/paste here without ruining the thread flow. Short version: without a reserved list change, Legacy's not a supportable format because the barrier to entry is too high due to card availability issues.
The excuse to ban chrome mox in the article is.... let's say not justified. You can't ban chrome mox just because you fear chrome into dark confidant. That has the same probabilities of having a 2 combo cards in the opening hand. And on top of that the confidant dies to lightning bolt and path to exile and both of those are 1 mana removal.

It's not just Dark Confidant.
Alot of things are balanced around the assumption of 1 land drop per turn, particularly the first 2 turns. Creature curve, removal, etc.
Chrome Mox is a little too versatile for what it does. With Chrome Mox first turn Blood Moon or Magus of the Moon is very doable. Non-red/monocolored decks? Instantly locked out for 4-5 turns. GG. Etc, etc. Heck, first turn Lotus Cobra is pretty nuts. Straight into turn 2-5 drop off a fetch.
This banlist is for the online thing right?
Maybe if it gets to be a real format WOTC might drop the banlist and let us play. After a period they will analyze what was played and how dominant a card was and place a ban on it... and let people play again...
At least i hope they do
Vial not being banned seems like an oversight to me, especially with Ravager and Disciple in the format (I know the deck takes a hit from no artifact lands but still...)
Makes me want to play Legacy merfolk minus FoW/Daze. The cards are mostly here.

With the amount of nonbasics that are gonna be played I think it's quite healthy for the format to have early blood moon effects. Not that I can think of a deck that could do what you say and be a good deck at the same time. All-in red gets greatly hosed by path to exile.
The banlist to seemed like a way for them to inspire creativity. The goto decks would have been: Depths, Thoptar, Dredge, Affinity
So they ban the most important card of each deck and all of a sudden you have to brew new decks (although the exclusion of Grave troll seems marginal).
Unfortunately many decks will start with:
4 Stoneforge
1 Batterskull
1 Sword of War and Peace
1 Sword of Feast or Famine
4 Jace the Mindsculptor
4 Hallowed fountain
4 Watery Grave
As well as other "older decks" that will become much better thanks to new cards. Tooth and Nail with Titan? Gifts with more reanimation targets and soft locks? Affinity lists that will look similar to the popular new Legacy builds? Glare? Pickles? Dragonstorm with 0 drop artifacts? Soul Sisters playing Proclamation and Martyr of Sands?
There is much room to try new things. I think the real benifits go to those folks who came in playing during the new card frames. I think I'm not the only one who's suddenly remembering our old favorite competitve decks and wondering how to tweak them with a larger pool of cards.
For the lazy people: in the article they talk about legacy having too high of a barrier for new players, that they regret the reserved list, that modern in the cup is to test the format and that it is very possible for it to become a real think. They also talk about how they decided the banned list and why some card didnt get banned (arther vial, hypergenesis and stuff)... pretty cool!
Go there and vote for "It's awesome!" on the "What do you think of Modern?" pool!
I was also thinking about:
GU tron (Titan Sauce + Treasure Mage for academy ruins and mindslaver)
Teachings (Teferi still seems pretty good i hear)
MonoBrown With Sundering Titans, Eldrazis, Wurmcoil Engines
Project X
Zoo
SEISMIC FREAKING SWANS (my most favorite combo deck ever)
Let the speculation begins (I have already invested in playsets of all the shock lands... time to ge tmore JUST IN FREAKING CASE.)
Well to be fair, he might have had the article written already and didn't have time to comment. That and really, there may be a rule in-house not to comment on stuff like this right away until it's had a chance to shine or fail.
Oh yes, I remember TarmoRack... Ghost Dad was fun as well... I ran mine as G/B though and used Natural Affinity + Grave Pact for the surprise kill against Tron and Heartbeat decks.
No the funny thing with bloodbraid elf is when you cascade into boom // bust because you can cast bust destroying all lands or there's the techy play of targeting one of their lands with boom and targeting one of your fetchlands with boom and fetching in response. You could play 12 LD effects via cryoclasm, stone rain, and boom//bust. Maybe splash black for rain of tears. Not sure what the deck name was though. And there are some LD effects in green I guess just can't remember any off the top of my head.
And invasion felt too 'arbitrary'? Starting with the new card frame leaves out a bunch of good cards. People will know what sets are legal if it's invasion forward since tournament players know these things and this isn't some casual format like EDH/Commander.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
I think the entire point that there are plenty of new card framed cards that are not legal in modern (Wild Mongrel as his example) completely invalidate the part about starting at Mirrodin being less arbitrary than starting elsewhere.
I'm pretty sure it'll be a Judge Promo within a year.
Edit: Oh, hey, Modern is a format.
This. I started in Mirrodin, and 8th edition was the core set. It would be such a "back to my roots" moment. Those sets make me incredibly nostalgic.
I want I want I want I want.

You need onslaught block legal for that deck to work.
4 Seismic Assault
4 Lotus Bloom
4 Dakmor Salvage
2 Gaea's Blessing
+ other disruption/filtering/draw
I did once win an event with a Mesmeric orb + Gaea's Blessing deck... People were so mad at me...
Of course now there is a TON more GY hate. Thanks Dredge.
Um... Life from the loam? seems pretty bonkers...
