Making it sanctionned means the DCI will be maintaining a ban list of sort, and the format will finally be a real format instead of some hodge-podge of brokenness mixed up with BS 'don't be a dick' proseletizing, which is useless.
A thousand times this. I love EDH, but I would love if the banlist and what people don't want to be played could match up, as well as dealing with annoying inconsistencies. For example, Tinker is banned, yet Tooth and Nail is not. Arguably, the difference is that one is blue and three mana and one is green and nine mana, but in practicality, both put out a giant monster on turn 3-except Tooth and Nail puts out two. Additionally, Coalition Victory and Time Stretch are nominally different, just similar by being expensive spells, but Coalition Victory with proper setup wins you the game immediately and a Time Stretch with proper setup....wins you the gamer immediately.
Personally, I like the idea of EDH being official and maintained by Wizards. Yeah, it would "become infested with Spikes", but there's a difference between being official and a tournament format. EDH being official would give a hard and fast line on what's allowed and what isn't, while still keeping everything the same.
I would love to see a universal ban list instead of having to know each LGS you go to plays ban list. I would like to see some type of sanctioning too. Granted any type of sanctioning would ruin the casualness of the game to a point.
If there is a ban list, I would assume it would be rather lengthy. There are some stupid powerful combos available now that can make the game really not fun.
I'm going to remain apprehensive for this: it could be something amazing and would let us forgive them for the recent "misteps" or it could be something that makes it that much harder to attract new customers and keep their current ones.
Time will tell.
On an aside, If they sanction the format, they'd have to ban clique, then doran and teneb, then azami. Frankly I'm sick of all of them (the blue decks have nearly unlimited counterspells, the GBW have a combo that can't be stopped, even by killing off multiple combo pieces.)
What?
Sheldon came out with this news. The person who continually stresses that EDH is a casual format, the person usually credited with inventing the format, the person responsible for policing the ban list of the format.
If HE thinks this is a good thing, I would be hard pressed to find an issue with it.

It would be nice if we could get a set of EDH decks made in the same style of Archenemy and Planechase, where they just produce a few decks and keep it non-sanctioned. They could even make promo (perhaps even full-art) versions of the generals.
I think you are all wrong. The announcement is just gonna be another money grab from Hasbro. I don't think they will sanction it. No money in it for them. I think it will be a product or some way for them to make more bank.
It would be amazing if they sanctioned it. Some of the Ban list is really "meh". '
If they sanction it, it means they may also support it. Who wouldn't love to see them start putting out promo's of popular Generals? Full art Generals? I'm there. There are also a large number of EDH "Staples" that could be made into promo's. If they put out a Special product with say, some EDH general promo's and a bunch of staples, and slapped a price tag of 50 bucks on it, I bet it would get bought.

Yeah, most likely something to the effect of those Commander decks you can buy on MTGO...

Since it was Sheldon's comment and he is at the heart of the "EDH as a fun casual format" camp, it can be hoped that it won't be anything like wizards taking over the format, sanctioning it, increasing the ban list and making it a much more competitive "spiky" format in general.
That said I have strong doubts that wizards(read Hasbro) would do anything in relation to EDH out of the goodness of their hearts. EDH has become by far the most popular casual format(even to the extent that it is more popular in many communities than any of the constructed formats), wizards knows this and they also know that it's a format in which you can build a deck which apart from adding a couple of cards here and there when new sets come out, the deck doesn't have to change(which means little or no money for wizards since most of the deck comes from already purchased cards and/or the secondary market). Wizards has already done things in recognition of this, one was the creation of the Commander format on MTGO and the rules linked to that. The other is the many special products like From the Vault, Dual Decks and Premium Deck Series, all of which cater to the deck pimping EDH demographic.
My guess is that instead of being a directly EDH related announcement it could instead be a product that would be something a lot of EDH players would desire. Something like "From the Vaults: Legends" made up of 15 of the coolest legends of all time would be cool. Or simply releasing precons like the commander ones.
I notice that the prevailing assumption, in spite of EDH's founder telling us that the news will be positive, is that Wizards is about to screw up EDH.
This amuses me to no end, in light of Wizards' claiming that every bungle they make will result in "an improved player experience".
I'm not too worried. The player community has shown an ability to create new formats when the sanctioned formats suck; if Wizards manages to screw up EDH, people who play Magic for fun will start playing PDC or something that hasn't been invented yet.

hahaha. I know! I have been playing since 1994 and Wizards has actually been on a tear the last 5-6 years. They are making good decisions for the long-term health of the game and have learned from their mistakes. If Sheldon is excited about this then I am sure it's a good thing - I trust the guy.
I don't see this as anything else than the announcement as Commander for the multiplayer product for this summer. (Someone remind me the timing of when they announced Planechase and Archenemy).
It would be cool to give us new art foils of the other Elder Dragons (to go along with a reprint of FTV Nicol Bolas art) and put in one shockland, one fetchland, an EDH staple or two, and a bunch of junk rares. Maybe they could throw in the Invasion dragons (or at least the ones who didn't get new frames from DD:PvC) and such so the pre-cons could have alternate generals. I'd pay $25 or so for that (and probably buy all five).
The summer multiplayer products are very much in the "casual" spirit of EDH, so I could see why Sheldon, in the immortal words of William Shatner, can get behind that.
Yeah, EDH's current "management" isn't working so well. The banlist is inconsistent and the rule banning Bosh, Iron Golem and Rhys the Exiled as generals needs to be taken out. I feel like Wizards could do it better. If not, everyone could just switch back to fan-run EDH.

Hes infeasible as a general due to having a black ability with no black in his cost. He violates the Colorado he sets under current rules
Both of the cards violate that rule by having a mana symbol that isn't in thire casting cost and to un ban thire use as a general would also mean other cards would be allowed as generals
Both of the cards violate that rule by having a mana symbol that isn't in thire casting cost and to un ban thire use as a general would also mean other cards would be allowed as generals
I think the only two other cards that would become legal generals as a result of such a rule change would be Memnarch and Thelon of Havenwood.
The rule change would be simple and improve the consistency and teachability of the format. Just take "no card in your deck may include a colored mana symbol anywhere on it or be of a color that isn't found in your general's mana cost" and change the "in your general's mana cost" part to "on your general's card face". Make a similar change to the mana generation rules that determine what colors you can tap things like Coalition Relic for and you're set.
Suddenly Memnarch is a legal general, and he still restricts card selection in a reasonable way: only colorless and blue cards would be allowed in a Memnarch deck, and the deck would only be able to produce colored mana. Easy peasy.
Thanks for the explanation. I was sitting here wondering," what's so powerful about these legends to warrant a ban" only to find out that it's because of there activated abilities. TMYK

I have a feeling it's going to be a Premium Deck or FTV for some of the more popular generals. The prices for foil generals are getting ridiculous (Jhoira, Captain Sisay, Vendilion Clique, etc.)

I'm hoping it's precons. But knowing Wizards they're probably going to sanction it or something.
But let's say they sanction it. Wouldn't the next logical step be precons? What better way than to get people into a new format than providing them with decks to play with?
