She's not wearing pants first of all.
And the light source from above her head creates the illusion that her belly is poking out a little more than it actually is (which is not much).
Her belly is not firm, but it's not poking out.
I was using the term pants loosely. Whatever her bottoms are, her stomach is hanging over them.

Big bellies on women can signify pregnancy, or the maternal. I think this is what is meant by the art, given the effect and the creature type. (Protection of her children)
On a side note, I like what they did. It's better for attracting women to the game. It gives the art a more educated feel instead of the "hot or not" juvenile impressions that other art of women(and men) have given. Even though there will mostly still be the "sexy" variety, every now and then going this way is a good decision, in my opinion.
And that's exactly what most of these posts are. Juvenile.
Edit: and so what if she were fat?? Which she's not. There's plenty of other arts in magic for you kids to *** to if you can't appreciate this art for what it is
Recent discussions here and elsewhere have made it clear that there seems to be a group of players who consider blue and control synonymous, as if they somehow started playing a game with four identical and "bad" colors that do nothing interesting because they just "turn men sideways" and then true, glorious blue, the only thinking person's color.

And we have our first "thick" bodied angel. I'm fine with angels looking lithe and delicate, and I'm fine with them looking athletic, and warrior-like. Somehow, however, an angel that looks as if she's "let herself go" doesn't make much sense to me.
Her arms appear to be thin, which makes me think the artist just failed.
and so what if she were fat?? Which she's not.
What is she then? Husky? Heavy? Overweight? She's not thin, she's not athletic, she certainly appears to be overweight. I won't argue with you about beauty, since that's an opinion, but she's definitely overweight (which doesn't make sense for an angel).
For the record, I'd be saying the same thing if it were a male angel who was overweight. This isn't about finding her attractive.

I have NOTHING against fat/overweight people. I'm overweight myself.
People who I DO have something against are people like you who refuse to admit that someone is fat/overweight, just because they are not "anorexic" like the "rest of the angels in Magic", or that she is "proportionate" when her arms are as thing as twigs, and her stomach is hanging over her bottoms.
I do appreciate this art for what it is. A bad piece of art from an artist who has no idea how to proportionate an angel.

Ok, thats just not right at all.
You drew the "pants" to the edges of the wings. Which is certainly not where her waistline goes.
Through a combination of bad lighting and those dark wings, it looks like her waist is much bigger than it actually is. Shes actually perfectly fit and proportioned like pretty much any other angel.

The problem is the art is entirely disproportionate. If we cut it in half we end up with two completely different women ...
First we have a super-model proportioned woman:
And then we have a much larger woman with a beer gut:
To me that is just plain bad artwork. The artist should preserve proportion unless the specific intent of the art is to distort that. You can tell just from looking at those clips. Visibly they do not appear to fit together and it looks like I increased the relative size of the second image, but they are cut directly from the same picture.

Zoom in on the picture. It's not bad lightning, it's a thick body. She is clearly proportioned differently (poorly) from other angels.

obvious troll is obvious.
If she would have had Indestructibility permanently on herself, she would definately see constructed play; as is, she is borderline.
Everything needs to be said about her playability has been said.

You're right! On closer inspection, her stomach actually hangs MORE over her pants than I noticed before!
Let's take a closer look, shall we (I've included a close-up on the stomach with no lines drawn by me in comparison, to show that I am not exaggerating where her pants go up to)?
As you can see, not only is her stomach hanging over from the front, she also has love-handles hanging over from the sides.
obvious troll is obvious
You need to look up your definition of a troll. I am not trolling in any way, shape, or form. I just don't like people spewing random nonsense about how she is proportionate, and that she isn't fat, when she clearly is. Whether you see that as beautiful or not is not up to me, nor do I care if you do/don't.
"If I do go to heaven, I'll smack god across the face and tell him to get me a grilled-cheeses sandwhich and then say 'Yea what now god!? Say some'in! I dare you!' "
The art sucks because there's a promo version. That's all there is to it. She's not "realistically proportioned" as women come in all shapes and sizes. It's just bad art.

And again, we are wasting all our time complaining about her body type because? Am I the only person who doesn't give a flying ☺☺☺☺ about what the art looks like? And yes, the limbs do look quite thinly and frail. Again, why are we babbling about this when we should be looking more at what the card DOES? Suddenly you can't use cards that don't look good anymore? I personally think both Crypt Rats arts look pretty bad, but I still use them. Why? Because they're good cards.
Ordinarily, I wouldn't exactly care, but this thread sure is devoting a disturbingly disproportionate amount of time to this, and I'm starting to wonder if I missed a memo that said you can only play with cards that look good. I'll admit, I'm not a fan of the artwork, but that shouldn't be make-or-break for a gaming card.
Though, I haven't been a fan of most of the other angels lately. Iona was pretty... not-right-looking.

Not gonna lie, if there was a Frank Frazetta-illustrated MTG set (or at least illustrated in the style of Frazetta), I'd probably actually find it pretty cool.
Yeah, after I just wanked about not caring about art. I'm a hypocrite, yes, but I can admit it.
I guess the old-masters knew nothing of proportion or beauty.
Just ☺☺☺☺ing sad...☺☺☺☺ing sad. This card is beautiful. ☺☺☺☺ all the haters. Enjoy berating your women into skinny buffoons that can't have any shape other than flat from their sternum to waist.
I like to see that there's an old-master touch to some of this MTG art. Bravo Johann Bodin.

You do know that back in the day of old-masters, a little weight in the stomach was considered a sign of nobility. Now that food is abundant, a flat stomach is considered a sign of self control.
Twiggy lead the revolution for the thin women, and now they're the majority that's frowned upon, instead of the disliked minority. Poor thin girls, they can never win it seems.

Of course they didn't, man. That's why they're old masters! </sarcasm>
I'd be more willing to agree with you, but one of my major problems is the coloration. It's a little bit too dark for an angel. Yeah, yeah, I know, apocalyptic scenario, but come on, can I get some decent lighting here?
Mind, that's been troubling for a while to me. I look at my Jund mountains and am forced to assume that they live purely by lava lamp lava-light.
And as for angels, we've probably all been tainted by the fact that, while she could probably kill us all before we could even recognize it, Akroma was pretty hot.

That's not how fat hangs under the effects of gravity. I would argue the cloth is hanging off of her wide hips, laying loosely on her front side.
Edit: And Jesus Christ, the art isn't nearly as bad as you guys are all playing it off as. The artist didn't 'fail' at anything.
