Do we even know anything about how the game works yet? I thought all we had to see was the little article, the nothing-important trailer, and the website with nothing on it.
I'm curious to see how this works out. I do so hope it resembles Shandalar in a way. I wouldn't be interested in the apparent paid, WoW-like version, but single-player scenarios with a Shandalar-esque atmosphere would get me really excited.
MODO is fake, it requires no infrastructure, no materials to make. MMOs have cash markets for items in game, does that mean they are not just bits and would exist if all the databases went offline permanently?
Congratulations, you just claimed every bank in the world works with "fake" money.
So imagine...
You are a Planeswalker...
The sky is filled with sorcery. Hackers, bots...all flying, using double strike to destroy.
You run away...scared because all you know how to cast is a Metallic Sliver.
The vast land annoys you.
Minding your own business, you are walking a field that seems user friendly...
A Shivan Dragon casted by another Planeswalker who doesn't give a damn strikes you.
You die.
You return to your spawn area, upset at what has happened. You then realize you lost your Metallic Sliver after being raped by the 11/5 Shivan Dragon...

You know that Pokemon trading card game they had for Gameboy color?
I want them to make a game like that. You get packs from playing NPCs and tournaments and what not. You make decks out of whatever you open after choosing a starter when you first start the game. I'd play that one. Maybe you could use your decks and play otherpeoples decks online.

This actually sounds like they're combining the D&D tactical skirmish miniatures game with an MtG-themed skin and setting it online than anything else. Not a bad approach, necessarily. Could be interesting, although again I remain skeptical of SOE until they actually deliver a game I enjoy.
From the two links, it sounds like it isn't really a "card game" in the sense that real Magic is, but that it will have collecting and trading.
I agree, this game seems to be a MMORPG based in the Magic the Gathering universe. I can imagine it will play like Everquest instead of MtGO. I am really not looking forward to yet another game that requires a monthly fee, if that happens.

Dig out a computer with Windows 95 and you can live that dream. The original Duel of the Planeswalkers was pretty much the game you're describing. It was basically an overhead RPG with each game being for ante and sometimes there was an additional prize. It really holds up pretty well, considering most of the cards are pre-Legends.

This isn't an mmorpg. The word rpg was never used by anyone in any announcement or interview. Also, no monthly fee has been mentioned, but buyable packs has.
Hmm sounds like Dungeon Dice Monsters for yugioh. I wonder if they would do some kind of cross link service with MODO.
This has to remain separate from modo for obvious reasons. Also, as many have mentioned, Shandalar and Pokemon TCG both predate the cookiecutter ygo games.

There are a lot of reasons why many banks collapsed recently but having "fake money" isn't one of them. Things only have value because people place a value on them. There's no such thing as fake or real value and being a digital object or an intellectual property or a physical item doesn't really matter at all.

He's talking about the YGO tabletop tactics game Dungeon Dice Monsters which was also turned into a video game. Pokemon also recently announced a new card game that somehow involves dice so this idea isn't new.
The only thing I hope for in this game is that the flavor is kept in tact. Basically if they truly convert MTG cards to their game system then I'll be happy. If they just steal the art from MTG and plaster it on a generic creature then I'll be disappointed.
@Seds - Actually, I believe it's pretty clear that this will be a RPG of sorts. They mentioned single-player campaigns, and given the very nature of being a collectible game, I don't see how they'd pull that off without falling into the RPG camp.
Oh the utter irony in you making fun of my statement in the way you did. How many major financial institutions recently collapsed because of this reason?
So does that mean you keep your money safely hidden on your bedsheet instead of investing it in bank accounts? Because you know, if your bank collapses, you won't be getting your money back.
Players who invest on MTGO aren't buying "fake" product as you imply. I know the fun I get from playing Magic anytime I want is very real.
And make no mistake: MTGO will be around for as long as the game itself does. The only way they will bring the servers down is if they stop supporting the game itself and putting out new sets - and in that case, for a tournament player like me, those paper cards will be worthless anyway.
But I digress.

I'd be very excited about something like that as well. In fact, just make a PokemonTCG-like RPG where we get to visit different planes to battle different planeswalkers, and you got me hooked.

I don't mean to keep stirring the pot on this one but your analogy is flawed. If I leave my money in a bank for 5 years, they don't tell me "sorry the redemption period for your money has expired." Nor are there weekly situations where I go to an ATM to take out my money and the ATM tells me it's offline for one reason or the other.
I find great irony in you comment that you can play it any time. I've spent quite a few dollars in MTGO and I find that almost EVERY time I sit down with free time on my hands to play around on it - it's down or the kinds of games I want to play are down or removed from the tool. Meh.
Don't count on MTGO staying around forever. Just because it's poular today doesn't mean fans won't move on to something else or some fans (like myself) will get fed up with it and quit pumping money into it.
Also, just because Wizards goes out of business doesn't mean MTG paper cards will be worthless - in fact, it's likely the value would go up.

I don't think the value of MTG paper cards would go up if MTG shut down tomorrow. Yes, you could still play Magic with them (something you couldn't do with MTGO cards) but that doesn't mean it'll be any fun.

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."
Well, it's good to know if I ever make a videogame with any sort of strategy at its core, I can slap "Tactics" on the box and have rabid FFT and Disgaea fans lining up before I even release screenshots.

Why? People will still want to play. But now there will be no source of new product, so the demand will stay roughly similar to what it is now, but supply will disappear entirely. When Demand>Supply, prices go up, that's simple business.

I'm at page 15 I am hungry for lunch and I don't want to exhaust myself reading all the ******ation so far posted in this thread. I have some comments. I am really excited for this game. Unlike other people (some of you just ask for too much)
This is not a 'Tactics' RPG. Gawd, get over yourselves. Final Fantasy doesn't have some kind of exclusive right to keep everything labeled 'tactics' to themselves just because some game has that name maybe they chose that name for a completely different reason? Even if it is that's cool too... Shandalar? That was a cool game. You collected cards, and played against powerful wizards and etc.. that was pretty flavorful and a lot like the real game is. So thanks to all of you drawing that comparison I would love a remake of that classic game. We have no idea what the heck this game is going to be but one thing it will have are trophies, rankings, player vs player (PVP? why choose this word? yes it makes it sound like an MMO but it probably just means playing against real people), deck building, so far from the limited information in the announcement and interview on Penny Arcade I have seen it actually sounds really promising.
Hey you know what? In the Penny Arcade interview I can quote it they say the PC version (of this new game) will be in tandem with the PS3. They will share. Conceivably this means those of you with PCs can connect with those with PS3s. I'm not sure I have ever heard of this being done before and I am not sure it is possible. Isn't that wonderful though?
You know what else? Maybe the MTGO product will be reimplemented to work with this new Tactics game. However.. what I am a bit lost on is the 'Tactics' name. It's not MTGO: PS3 version, this seems different.
I'll say this though.. I played MTGO in beta.. riding the way-back machine.. I was really really disapointed and felt cheated that the paper cards did not cross into the online realm. The division between the two really upset me. I was so excited at the thought that I could go and buy booster packs and then 'register' my cards in my Magic The Gathering Online game. I figured I would buy the magic video game for $59.99 or whatever videogames cost back then and then I would seamlessly enjoy the paper magic experience on the internet with people all over the world.
I have
wanted this
for
so long.
When was MTGO originally announced? That's how long I have been waiting for that!
It's such a simple, intuitive request.
Make paper digital, so I can connect and play something as close to paper magic as possible. So that I can sit in a comfy chair in my pyjamas with tea and biscuits and get crumbs everywhere and play magic whenever I wanted. Going out in the dead of winter hugging a trade binder and a hat all bundled up to travel 45min to play magic, SUCKS.
Another thing I am happy to play Magic The Gathering Online if I didn't have to transfer money into a paypal account and transfer fees and conversion fees and etc... Buying time cards seems so much easier for me. I anticipate and wait for the day I can buy physical cards and a 'digital pack' in a physical card store. I would really appreciate the two of these worlds joining.

I'm pretty certain that if they did this, attendance to paper tournaments would drop significantly.
if people are more comfortable at home playing digital magic then why does it matter?
I will still play paper magic because I like collecting real cards. Print media and publishing is disappearing I agree.
And I'm all for it.
It should go away. It should disappear.
*
Let me be more clear sorry..
You cannot have it both ways.
If WOTC wants a great online magic the gathering product it will compete against paper magic. It just has to be this way.
I would love this to happen. Not because I want paper magic to go away completely it's just that I respect the game that much that I want any digital version to be at least it's equal.
Is that so much to ask?
*
SOMETHING EPIC JUST HAPPENED IN MY BRAIN
K,
If the new Magic The Gathering Online is browser based, and mac compatibile, then it follows that Magic The Gathering Tactics could be intercompatible somewhere as well?
Is this possible? I mean if they want MTGO to be cross platform (as far as computers go) and to connect to the internet to play through a browser.. Does it follow that you could have this implemented on the PS3 relatively easily? I could go on Sony Store and play online there as well?

I think this is what the game needs.

Ok..
Here's a question I pose to the salvation forums:
Who cares?
if people are more comfortable at home playing digital magic then why does it matter?
I will still play paper magic because I like collecting real cards. Print media and publishing is disappearing I agree.
And I'm all for it.
It should go away. It should disappear.

SOMETHING EPIC JUST HAPPENED IN MY BRAIN
K,
If the new Magic The Gathering Online is browser based, and mac compatibile, then it follows that Magic The Gathering Tactics could be intercompatible somewhere as well?
Is this possible? I mean if they want MTGO to be cross platform (as far as computers go) and to connect to the internet to play through a browser.. Does it follow that you could have this implemented on the PS3 relatively easily? I could go on Sony Store and play online there as well?
I care, and you should or will. It is not good for us to all become introverts and to play part in a negative revolution in modern society where we are secluded from one another.
