Bloom Tender has to make it a turn. This does not. After it resolves you can play a fetch and they can't even respond until you pop the fetch.
While I am not a fan of crazy scenarios it doesn't seem unreal to go turn one birds/elves/heirarch. turn 2 this, drop a fetch for (1) mana, pop fetch for (2) mana, play harrow for (4) mana with two mana untapped. 6 mana turn 2 seems good, sure 5 cards isn't super likely, but all in red does similar, you build around it it can be insane. This thing is nuts IMO.
Both this and Tender come down turn 2. Lotus Cobra doesn't do anything on turn 2 unless your turn 1 was either a mana elf or birds. If it DOES do anything turn 2, you're generating a maximum of two mana (assuming you lay it down off an elf and a land, then play a fetch afterwards) unless you then also Harrow. You've now spent five cards out of the eight you've seen in the game thus far unless you're playing on the draw, and your deck is probably packed with lots of lands, land fetch, llanowar elves, and birds of paradise to make sure you get your cobra out turn 2, so one of those three or four cards you're now holding had better be a win condition or you're probably well and truly screwed.
That play is basically screaming 3 for 1 yourself though.
ofc, but so is the "mountain black lotus channel fireball" (and leaving you at 1 hp after the 3 for 1). Its just an example of the 'impossible god hand'. Whats really scary about this lotus, however, is that it simply does not need a god hand.
A deck list might look like this:
8x Fetchland
4x Birds of Paradise
4x Lotus Cobras
With just that, essentially anything is possible. It could be aggro, combo, ramp, whatever.
Everyone needs to stop bashing this card. Green/Blue control with ramping into eldrazi monument to protect your mana production from removal sounds pretty solid to me.

Eldrazi monument won't see any play, sorry :'(
i like the floating cubes though
Lotus Cobra: Yep, this card is nuts. While it does not prove any real card advantage, it does something that is very close to what Noble Hierarch did: make mana, and go in for damage. The Hierarch did it through Exalting another creature, this creature just does it, and for more damage. Even without the existence of fetchlands this card would have been good. The play of 2nd turn Cobra into 3rd turn Bloodbraid Elf is very strong and applies a lot of early game pressure. That alone will make this card a 4 of in almost every aggressive green deck.
I do not think this card needed to be Mythic, but it definitely needed to be Rare, if not just because this as an uncommon would have been very amazing in multiples for Limited. But it does make some sense as a Mythic- it is jaw-dropping and is perhaps the most dangerous application of Landfall- now your comes into play tapped lands don't come into play tapped anymore! And they fix your colors! It's the day where every card is good!
Makes me want to buy 2 boxes instead of 1.
Pyromancer Ascension: Ha, awesome. Difficult to pull off, sure, but this card is so fricking sweet. It could give a red deck a lot of late game. How cool is this with Red mana ramp spells?!?
Eldrazi monument won't see any play, sorry :'(
i like the floating cubes though
Wouldn't see any play until you consider free mana into the equation, if LC becomes the premier mana engine then you most definatly will look at decks with its protection in mind. How many times have people talked about the won't see play only to find it become tech.
Sarcasm aside, legacy elves don't need this guy since they hardly rely on lands for mana anyway. Hell, even elf combo in t2 likely wouldn't use this guy.
Mythics are defined as splashy awe inspiring effects, and are defined as not staple-aka, an auto four of in everything for that archetype...
...It's insane, it's awesome, but beyond the deck that really wants it, it's not a requirement. Hence, it is perfectly fine as a Mythic.
what competitive green deck in the upcoming standard would not run it? screams staple to me.
I don't understand what the big deal is with this cobra? People are posting these frigging ELABORATE card interactions. What are your opponents doing while you do all of this? Passing the turn without doing anything?
most likely doing the same thing, unless they are poor like most of us, in which case they'll be doing the same thing sub-optimally.
Do you guys even think before you post? First of all, Cobra at rare would probably destroy limited.
rares and mythics dont typically destroy limited. at a single event you aren't very likely to ever see this guy. i'd be a little more concerned if it was uncommon...though damn, doesnt that sound like a fun format to play?
for all those shouting "this is utility!" do you know what utility probably means to wizards of the coast?
what I think utility is? mold adder. Essence Scatter. negate. Sideboard stuff. now on with the thread.
i would implore you to read up on what wotc themselves have said about their opinions on what defines "utility" as well as what they think mythic should be. i think you would be sadly disappaointed.
I think the Lotus Cobra is really good, and I can see why it is a mythic (association with Black Lotus, which is supposed to be very rare in the Magic universe) but I don't see it hitting $40. People are putting up all kinds of crazy draws that are possible with it, but a single Lightning Bolt will leave you with a bunch of overcosted jank in your hand. You don't want to build your deck around it because it is fragile, but it can certainly make aggro strategies better. I think this card will help to enable B/R/x decks with Bloodbraid Elf.
We've had the cobra twice now and people called fake and threads were locked. Who's laughing now? I like it, but I feel it should've been just rare not Mythic.
As I have already said, grats on your dead card when you don't draw the Cobra.
And I assume you mean nothing but fetchlands and forests, otherwise
Wasn't it flores who said he couldn't wait to see the "decks" it spawns, so easily did we forget and assumed its only practicality was in ramp only. This card will find many places for any deck that wants free mana.
And the Red Ascension is pretty bonkers. Remember Chandra Ablaze? Yeah...oh yeah...<_<
Now that sounds like an interaction worth pursuing. I still don't think Pyromancer's Ascension is all that good, but that could very easily be worth building for the kitchen table.
With all these cool ass cards for white and green, did black's stock just plummet by busting out the 'cool' card early? Or is WOTC, hopefully, saving some bests for last?
what's up with all those wierd mythic rares in this sets? (except for the
planeswalkers)
most of them i would never even guess they could be a rare.
what a shame.
up until now i can't realy say i've seen a card i realy realy want to add into
my collection that much.
anyway for all those people saying :"wow 6 mana on turn 3"
why not to go all the way:
turn 1: land -> bop (1 land in play)
turn 2: snaky -> fetch (1 mana) ->use the fetch (2 mana) ->rampant growth or something. (3 lands in play)
turn 3: fetch(1 mana) ->use the fetch (2 mana): 4 lands in play + bop
comes to 7 mana on turn 3 --------->>>>>>>> crual ultimatum.
(although not many lose on the board for opponent)
The lotus cobra validates just about every complain every thrown at Wizard.
Power creep? Yup.
Cash grab? Yup
Shouldn't be Mythic? Yup
Nerfing Control? Yup
Jumping the shark? Yup (oh, I kinda miss this one)
Is it me, or is Zendikar the Eternal format set?
If a card is so powerful that a million jaws dropped at once, shouldn't it deserve the highest rarity? What if it was a utility card that just about every deck will play? Should have Wizard called it "More Rare than Rare" instead of "Mythic Rare"?
As I have already said, grats on your dead card when you don't draw the Cobra.
And I assume you mean nothing but fetchlands and forests, otherwise
unless you are assuming the deck runs like 18 lands and no accel beyond the cobra, i don't see how 5 mana is a dead card.
so you won't get it out turn 3. damn. if you didn't build your deck like a moron and have any skill at determining keepable hands, it's gonna hit the table.
also, just to get this perfectly clear:
cobra in play. play a forest. o neat. i get a mana of any color, let's say...white. ok now i do one of a million things zendikar standard green can do to get another forest in play. o neat, i'll take another white please.
of freaking course this is nowhere near optimal, i was merely making the point that the lack of a W/G fetchable dual in no way prevents you from easily and consistenly making WW...and early at that.
Who the hell do they have writing the flavor text these days? It's just so completely banal and uninspiring.
This is my biggest problem with the card.
Obviously good, though I'm not sure it's good in every format. Dark Confidant is better. Tarmogoyf is better. I think it's on par with Confidant in that it will fit very well in certain decks, but ultimately be a niche card. Green has better creatures for 2 mana, and usually has better forms of ramp.
The red enchantment is mediocre at best. Also, there isn't enough quality burn to make it worth it in standard.
What's with all the hype about Lotus Cobra? It's a good creature, but if you expect anything more than a Lotus Petal effect out of it, you're sadly mistaken.
except that with just fetches and cobras, you're going to get a 3+ ramp out of it t2/t3. And thats in dead hands. It only produces a 'lotus petal' effect if you run basic lands. With fetches, you get an extra +2 off a topdeck fetch, and if you laid a fetch without sac'ing it t2 (elves equivalent t1), you could ramp +3 with cobra alone on turn 3.
Thats not requiring anything special. It fits into just about everything.
You play aggro, you get a 2/1 for 2 that helps you lay down bigger beaters
Both this and Tender come down turn 2. Lotus Cobra doesn't do anything on turn 2 unless your turn 1 was either a mana elf or birds. i feel ya. i quit a few years back and just recently came back. oh yeah, and i'm currently unemployed. at least i've still got both kidneys...for now.

read the card much? you can get baneslayer out with this guy no problem running nothing but forests (and that's likely not going to be the case).
And I love the fact that people called it fake, before it was spoiled in this way.
