Thanks to "cast spells", my inner vorthos came. Yay.
The only downside - I *REALLY* wanted shocklands back. I hope the new lands aren't a permanent fixture, or that they bring shocks back soon. I want to see them again.
As for the new lands, we know one thing - they won't "cost" the player anything, i.e. life, cards, or permanents to play. So, heres a suggestion:
Glacial Plateau
Land - Plains Island
~ comes into play tapped.
Sound reasonable?
No. This is immediately obsoleted by the shocklands in Extended and wouldn't see play until the Vivid lands are out of Standard, making Reflecting Pool suck again. They'd want it to be different, if only to make sure that two-color Legacy decklists don't start with 4x fetchland, 12x good duals with basic types.
I think this is a little closer to what they'd do:
Frozen Plain
Land — Plains Island (rare)
Whenever Frozen Plain would come into play, you may remove a blue or white card in your hand from the game. If you don't, put Frozen Plain into your graveyard instead of into play.
This might work better because it's not strictly worse than shocklands and is an homage to Force of Will and the original pitch spell cycle.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
We wanted to make a cycle of powerful dual lands that risk-averse newer players would like, which meant coming up with something that didn't involve losing life. Sorry, painlands, fetchlands, and Ravnica duals. Trust me, the new ones are awesome!
all ive got to say is: you better make them uncommon. srsly...

No, they said they want these to appeal to newer players, I don't think discarding cards for their lands is going to make them happy. Sure, they love to discard cards for huge creatures, but for their lands? They're more likely to go with coastal tower and company.

A card game about Presidents. Stabbing each other. With knives.
This news got my heart pumping when I starting reading about all these changes. The thought of new cards in a core set made me yell out loud when I first read it. But Aaron talking about the flavor of core sets going back to traditional fantasy got me very excited. It's very cool for them to reveal some of the new cards, which I love the flavor of.
I think it's a great decision on their part and can't wait to play with M10 (Weird :D).
Kind of sad to see they're only printing 8 of the 16 cards that have been in every core set though. But probably necessary.
Edit: One of the things that is oddest to me is "cast" and "resolve" being put on brand new cards. This sets a precedent does it not?
The Lorwyn 'walkers were an obvious choice and I'd have been disappointed if they weren't included...especially considering how prominently they've been featured in packaging of late. They're popular cards, and they're all fun to play with.
Giant Growth is going all the way--I'm calling it right here. Scathe Zombies and Grizzly Bears are going out. Wrath of God will probably stay.
Everything that has been announced is a good thing that I can easily get behind.
What about something to the effect of "Flip-Flop" lands?
Unstable Mountain
:symtap:: If there is a charge counter on ~, remove it and add to your mana pool. Otherwise, put a charge counter on ~ and add to your mana pool.
Easy to understand, no life-loss drawbacks to scare the newer players away, playable but neither broken or auto-includes... a possibility, maybe?
Air Elemental
Drudge Skeletons
Giant Growth
Howling Mine
Nightmare
Wrath of God
Not so sure on the other 2, but Giant Spider's flavor is pretty awesome, though Fear and Regeneration both are cool ways to highlight the mechanic they share a name with...
With Serra Angel at uncommon now, I doubt Air Elemental will make a comeback. I would place Fear and Giant Spider in that list above, in place of the elemental and Nightmare.

My main main Air Elemental is no way no how getting kicked from the Core.
...I mean, it's certainly possible, but how better to demonstrate disparity between two colors than to hold Serra Angel up next to Air Elemental?
I would leave Nightmare out and not put Fear back in.

Tarmogoyf has no evasion, yet it sees tonnes of play. What makes this any different?
My speculation regarding "casting" spells as opposed to "playing" spells - i think it was needed to minimize confusion because howcan playing spells and playing land have the same terminology but apply different rules? Using thword "cast" makes perfect sense.
Planeswalkers in core is good...flavourwise, it makes perfect sense....how can they not travel to M10?!?! They're walkers!! Luckily i also have about 10 of each.... :>

I am NOT the girl in my avatar. Stop hitting on me. I'm a dude, just like you!
I don't think wizards could have made a better decision than this. For years, I've been pairing back my magic playing in part because it kept getting more expensive to keep up with Standard as each new set would be loaded with too many relevant cards an invalidate decks, and I felt the game has given up too much flavor in favor of mechanics. Furthermore, since 7th ed, the core set has been going down hill.
7th only had cards relevant for blue and Duress. 8th barely added anything to the game at all (I think just Persecute and Plow Under. Anything else?) 9th was so utterly forgettable I couldn't even tell you what worthless dreck made up that set. 10th was black bordered and actually had several good cards in it
But even though 10th redeemed the core set in terms of cards that mattered, strong flavor, something the early editions of the core set had in spades, has been lacking in the Nth edition cards for a long time. There are basically two things Wizards could do to bring me back into playing Magic more regularly. One, returning the game to its roots wherever its both possible and good (we don't need the old rules, though). Two, support the Set Your Standards format (in which you can choose two expansions and a core set to build your deck).

That is not the problem.

I thought planeswalkers should never come into the core. But the changes to what the core is made me reconsider this.
And I think planeswalkers should not be in the core.
They are the face of magic, they are badass cards, yes all of that. But *as* the identities that drive the events we follow from plane-to-plane, block-to-block, they should be as ephemeral as those sets are. We should have to play with time away from Jace, wondering "what is Jace up to?" and then be hyped up when he makes a return to the "stage" of the ongoing story of the multiverse. This is just how I think it should go with planeswalkers.
I think Wizards may rethink this and discontinue their presence in future core sets, because I think they'll see that something like that plan just makes for more hotly anticipated cards.
On Wrath of God again: Srsly. When the card list comes out, when I get to the end of the White section, if I didn't see Wrath, my heart will palpitate. My face will beam. My eyes may fill with tears of joy. The healing of White will then begin.

When I first saw this, I was so upset about losing the Rav duals that I almost missed how amazing this change is. Like, I can't think of a real reason why this could in any way be bad. This is totally win-win for everyone. New cards? Check. Good older cards reprinted more often? Check. Fresh Limited format? Check. Staples? Check. "Cast" over "play"? Check.
Thank you, Wizards. This might be your best idea ever.

So, Wizards finally panders to the Vorthos!
This is just....so....awesome...and great....and...
Bringing visceral flavor back to the game is just about the best decision ever.
Wow. This is just such a huge change for the game, bigger than PWs even, and it's so well implemented. I'm speechless...
Oh, Urzaseds, could you give the link in the OP for convenience?

You're not taking into account the Mythic rarity. They want these iconic and powerful personalities to remain in rotation for extended periods of time, but I would not want them to waste a Mythic slot (of which there are probably only 15) on a Planeswalker reprint in the next set. Core is a fine place for them, especially in this new awesome format.
Also, I want Wrath back, it is the iconic magic card of the past 10 years. However, as long as it has a healthy replacement, I'll accept it. Just don't print a functional reprint sans no regen.

Is anyone else concerned about a new core set every year? It seems like it's going to be harder on the pocketbooks with quicker rotations on Core set cards, which would've lasted you two years under the old model.
wait, wait wait wait, i think i remember something.... something where people straight up yelled at other people claiming that shocklands were without a doubt confirmed....
while its upsetting that all these playsets wont be used in m10, im glad that there wont be shocklands DESTROYING the meta with domain lol.
Silence will probably be the money rare of the set, unless it gets countered, combo decks can freely go off. Also it allows a Maralock deck to work more easily.

I wonder if the "new duals" will be in the style of the other 4 future sight lands?
