Silence will probably be the money rare of the set, unless it gets countered, combo decks can freely go off. Also it allows a Maralock deck to work more easily.
I highly doubt it. Also, Maralen rotates three months after it comes into Standard.
I'd have loved to see the pain duals but I'll give wizards a chance to surprise me with the new ones What I actually think is REALLY bad is the fact that the core is now cycling every year... That's not a good thing for my Magic budget!
Am I the only one afraid the new players are going to be confused with the name?
Think about it... 10th is the old set, now you have to buy.... M10 ????
Air Elemental
Drudge Skeletons
Fear
Giant Growth
Goblin King
Regeneration
Samite Healer
Wrath of God
Samite Healer is the lineball call. Originally I was gonna say Orcish Artillery as a great example of red flavour, but there's the "risk averse" thing about self-inflicted damage that they don't seem to want in the core set even now, so I'll stick with the healer.

Where did they say that? All they said was they didn't want self-inflicting damage on the rare dual lands.
What does silence do exactly? Is it a one mana time walk?
not quite. you dont get to draw, your opponent does, they get to play lands and attack. they can also dredge, bazaar, activate tanglewire and smokestack, oath and... well...
Is anyone else concerned about a new core set every year? It seems like it's going to be harder on the pocketbooks with quicker rotations on Core set cards, which would've lasted you two years under the old model.
yes, in actuality this is a double whammy unless they purposely announce that core sets can overlap, ie that 11th ill be legal with 12th, and 12th with 13th and so on, because with current rules that only one core is online for standard at any given time, that means you'll only use these cards for a year, and half of them are new. so these new cards, unlike the conventional standard cards which do last for two years, these will be useful in t2 for only 1 year and have brothers who already have a supply in the market
Not quiet. At first, storm counts your spells too, so you just gave them the 10th spell, and secondly, they still can play instants as long as silence is on the stack. It would have needed split second then.
its ok if i gave them the 10th spell as long as they cant follow it up with tendrils. also, what storm spells are instants anyway? brain freeze needs to up the spell count sizably.
This is how it all starts. The "oohs", "ahhs", "love this idea", before it turns into "that card is too expensive", "that card has already been reprinted", "that card is too good", and "whine whine whine".
Once the dual lands are revealed, it'll just turn into a massive whinefest. If the duals don't actually suck, people will complain about how they'll be too expensive. If the duals do end up sucking, people will complain about how no one will ever play them and they're just bad.

Mind's Desire and Tendrils of Agony are both sorceries. If you cast Silence in response to the ritual that gives them Desire mana, or in response to their 9th spell, storm might get +1, but they won't be able to cast the storm spell anymore, so you pretty much just blew them out, since they probably played out most of their hand at that point. On the other hand, this card also makes it easier for combo decks to go off, they can cast this before they even start to play their combo-related cards.
Like others before me I like this announcement. The only thing rubbing me wrong is the rapid turnover rate for standard now. The cost of playing magic in standard is already high, add this annual core set rotation and things get expensive. I can roll with this but I do not like the idea of opening 50% reprints.
Say... is that red creature the first way that Red can destroy an enchantment? Every other random destroy stuff spell that Red has had said non-enchantment on it. So Red can (in theory) destroy a story circle?
like gamble was the 1st to tutor for red?
there will always be pie curves but the impt thing is to not be able to print one card from a color to another (to planeshift)
and hey, even char got printed in blue, right?
this card may be able to have a chance to destroy enchantments, but the odds are 50/50 at best, much like gamble had a chance to demonic tutor, even if a player could reduce the chances of the gamble blowing up by bloating the hand. this is even much more costly in terms of the precedent than gamble was
There has been some speculation as to which set of existing dual lands will be in the next core set, and the answer may surprise: none of them.
This would lead one to believe that the new duals have not been printed in any form, meaning that any of the Future-Sight modes will not be used. Also, because of the domain-centric Conflux, I would be surprised if they did not have the basic-land types that the Original and Ravnica duals had.
I personally can't think of a drawback that makes them powerful without losing life, but I'm sure R&D had enough spare-time to think of something.

i thought that was the whole idea?
i think its odd that 2 core sets will be standard legal at the same time. im all for most of the changes mentioned, but this just seems more confusing than helpful.
I have two complaints. One is that its M10, not M09. why is it named after the year after and not the year its going to come out. its a little confusing. Two is that core sets wont bump core sets. i guess it can be easy to have all sets rotate on the same date. but two core sets being legal at the same time can be a little weird. But could be cool and offset the smaller sets to allow for a bigger standard than would be.
other than that, i love everything about this idea. and my complaints arent really anything that matters too much to me. just something i thought i would cite.
New question: Where are people getting information about "new duel lands"? i have seen it mentioned multiple times, but am not sure where its coming from.

this i didnt read since i didnt read the article yet haha
its just the same principle as the block system where blocks bump off one block, not the entire standard pool. think of the cores are "core blocks" that exist in coincidence of the "regular blocks"
yes, the essence of core is a little diluted, but from being BB to having new cards never printed before, this is NOT a core set anyway. think of it as conflux that had a lot of reprints. now think of the reprint scale as 50% as opposed to like 10% hehe
I thought planeswalkers should never come into the core. But the changes to what the core is made me reconsider this.
And I think planeswalkers should not be in the core.
They are the face of magic, they are badass cards, yes all of that. But *as* the identities that drive the events we follow from plane-to-plane, block-to-block, they should be as ephemeral as those sets are. We should have to play with time away from Jace, wondering "what is Jace up to?" and then be hyped up when he makes a return to the "stage" of the ongoing story of the multiverse. This is just how I think it should go with planeswalkers.
I think Wizards may rethink this and discontinue their presence in future core sets, because I think they'll see that something like that plan just makes for more hotly anticipated cards.
On Wrath of God again: Srsly. When the card list comes out, when I get to the end of the White section, if I didn't see Wrath, my heart will palpitate. My face will beam. My eyes may fill with tears of joy. The healing of White will then begin.
I think you missed something about the walkers. I doubt there will ever be a direct reprint of any walker in an expert set. When they pop up again, they'll be a new card. Afterall, 3 abilities is an irrelevantly small sample of a walker's arsenal and they'll be flinging new spells based on the current situation.
They are obviously ramping up the power of core sets - serra angel at uncommon - and cutting out a lot of the crappy chaff like reducing the number of cards that have been in core since alpha (most of which suck).
This is great to me because the more playable cards there are the more space there is to be creative and make competitive decks.
I think wizards will think of some new good duals. I dono something like this maybe?:
Wet Mountain
T: add r or u to you mana pool
~comes into play tapped unless you reveal a red and blue card from your hand.
How bout dat?
And I think they will definetly include giant growth and wrath in reprints. And you can't not reprint grizzly bears. How will new players know what people are talking about when they say they play a grizzly bear. And I think they should keep goblin king. I thought he was so f'in cool when i started playing magic.
You know, for the article that begins with "Think about games that are popular today", this is actually pretty good. Though I do have some minor problems with it, it's still much more natural than Alara changes. I just hope that the third Un-set will come sooner or later (seriously, printing non-tournament legal set in place of the legal one was sorta lame) and that the core set will still contain at least some throwbacks at old worlds and characters beside the planeswalkers.
Riverside Forest Land - Forest Island
When ~ comes into play search your library for a Forest or Island card, reveal it, shuffle your library then put it on top.
:symtap:: Add or to your mana pool.
It fixes mana early game but becomes a liability mid-late game (I know wording is awkward i just cant think of a better wording right now)

Yeah I noticed that too. It almost would've been better if they'd waited another 2 years, then it would have aligned right (11th Edition this summer, then come 2012, Magic 12). Then the year would match the actual core set number. Oh well.

The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.

There, problem fixed. Not my favorite idea. but it can work.
My favorite is the Rupture Spire duels idea. Dont force them into play tapped, but make it harder to have in play. They can pay their own cost, which makes them like Salt Marsh style duels but with land types. or if you need that color, you could use your Urzatron Piece to pay it, so they come in play untapped.
to reiterate:
Lush Marsh
Land - Island Forest
When Lush Marsh comes into play, you may pay 1. If you don't, sacrifice Lush Marsh.

The flavor of the game is something I have definitely missed since say, Visions or so. Possibly even Ice Age/Alliances.
No lousy 4th sets is nice too. Coldsnap and Un's, I won't miss ya.
