Bluffing isn't lying about something. A bluff would be if they made subtle announcements about how it would be a very powerful set. Like having a "Core Set Week" and the cards of the day were Dark Ritual, Armageddon, Counterspell, Rancor, and Jackal Pup. Only to show up with the standard core power level.
Bluffing is never a direct lie, but a subtle misleading. If you can say "Why did you lie to me?" without looking like an idiot, it wasn't a bluff.
Here's to my wish that their bluffing on their bluff and that it is really black boardered so that I can get all of my very speculated cards black-boardered.
Heres to you:
BB Wrathof God (Death to Damnation in coresets)
BB Cloudpost (To replace UrzaTron)
BB Fetchlands (and to the speculated enemy fetchlands in FS)
I don't know, it just doesn't seem right to me. The point of the white borders is to separate the core sets from the rest of the expansions. Unless they change something else about the core sets, it just doesn't feel right to me.
Actually, 'the point' of the white borders was to distinguish reprinted cards from their originals when they re-used the same piece of card art. Now that they have the expansion symbols for the base sets AND core set art changes periodically, there's no need for a differently colored card border. I had this return to black borders figured out the moment the timeshifted reprints appeared in Time Spiral. These cards are the first english non-foil/promo reprints issued that re-used the original artworks and still had black borders. I don't remember seeing too many complaints about the 'new' black-bordered Akroma, Angel of Wrath.
Yes, it has affected the secondary market price of several older cards, but that is mostly because the cards were reprinted at all, not that they were black-bordered.
I might have to hold off on trying to finish my pain land set till 10th comes out. I have to say, having all 10 pain lands, modern border, all black border would be sweet. Especialy because I can't stand Ice age pains.

well i guess to each to his own I know the old art was kinda meh, but i still prefer old frames to the new ones, same way I like beta lands to the new ones.
But atleast with 10th being BB i might just buy a couple of boosters. I wish they made the lands ala unglued or unhinged now that would be the best gift i guess:D
This thread is full of idiots... Lightning Bolt is NOT being reprinted.
Many times has a writer in Wizards said so, because of the plain and simple fact that it's too powerful for what it costs. x/3 creatures shouldn't be able to die at instant speed for one mana without a signifigant drawback. (like PTE giving you a land)
I absolutely guarantee that LB will not be printed in M10, and you can quote me on that.
I'm not thrilled about it either from a long-term, health-of-the-secondary-market perspective...but short term, I'm getting me some BB Wraths. Hopefully.
Well seeing as BB ***s already exist if youre determined enough you can still find em floating around. Beta was the last set to have em but they were black bordered then and likely cost a pretty penny.
That being said I really prefer the black borders. As someone said earlier the white borders really distract from the actual card. It wasnt so bad when the colors on the cards looked the way they did on earlier sets up to around tempest and possibly urza block but when they went with mostly paler colors for the cards the white borders looked really bad

Every rarity gets good cards. That means that some mythic rares will be tournament quality as will some commons, some uncommons and some rares. My promise wasn't that mythic rares wouldn't get good cards but that we wouldn't limit the good cards to only being mythic rare.
Bear this in mind the next time a powerful mythic rare is spoiled

Is it just wishful thinking for me to think that it's more than just a coincidence that this news is being announced on the same day that the Card of the Day is Counterspell?
(read: maybe they're hinting at Counterspell in Tenth)
Maybe not.
The card of the day clearly says that Cancel has become the new standard counter, so that will be reprinted, if anything.
Also, this isn't a bluff, but it will certainly boost core set sales.

Each time they break a previous rule and "let" the players/collectors have something they desire, that's one less thing they can hold back and tempt us with. We've got premium cards... we've got tons of promos... we've got timeshifted brokenness back again, and soon we'll have black bordered Llanowar Elves, Wraths, Hyppies, and all that. They're slowly pulling out all the stops, looking for ways to maximize the longevity of the franchise, keeping the players happy... and yet drooling for more. I DO think we'll see Unglued style lands in 11th, or something similar to any extent.
Not that it's bad. They're doing what they have to do to keep the game going.
Honestly, I've always hated white border in general, and its original purpose, to show which cards are reprints, is completely bogus at this point anyhow. Cards get reprinted in black-bordered expansions all the time and nobody bats an eye. It's a tradition that I hope they get rid of permanently. I can tell something is reprinted without a hideous border, and so can the people who would care.
I don't think people use black-bordered cards because they're 'special', they use them because they just look cooler than WB cards. Making all cards BB thus just makes it easier to acquire them. Assuming they reprint ***, I would much rather have that BB *** than A)a foil one that costs a ton, B)a Beta one that also costs a ton or C)a Portal one that has ridiculously stupid artwork. I don't think that the cards being reprinted BB hurts anyone. Some people will like it, some won't care. It's hard to imagine anyone really disliking it. If they do, I'd say they're misunderstanding the draw to BB cards in the first place.
This is a VERY smart move will sell the product much easier.
You guys can try to make up reasons why but the fact is BB is better in 95% of the magic players eyes. Its a marketing decision plain and simple I think base sets have had problems selling product recently.
This type of move will severly push that product as people will clamor for BB Birds of Paradise (assuming it comes back) or BB *** (assuming it comes back).
BoP very obviously isn't coming back, and you can get them extremely easily because of Rav anyway.
Also, 9th edition sold extremely well, because it made painlands easy to find again, and they were used en masse. Also, almost the entirety of magnivore.dec from last season consisted of 9th Ed. cards. In particular, alot of 9th Ed. sold because of Tidings...that card was ridiculously difficult to get ahold of, especially if you were trying to get a BB version. Paying 12 dollars on ebay for a BB uncommon didn't really sit that well with many people, but that was your only real option when it came to Tidings because you either A)had to get a real one from Portal or w/e set it was in which is almost impossible or B)you had to get a Russian one which was also significantly difficult. I'm rambling now.
I like this idea i just looked at that a second ago i like black bordered cards. Yes we know that there reprints but ohhh well. It is just somthing special for the 10th edition I kind of knew they were going to do this.

Will the players be happy with it? Yes. I myself will upgrade *all* the 10th Edition playables that were also in 9th. Llanowar Elves, Naturalize, Shock/Volcanic Hammer (whichever one comes back as Incinerate busts the other), oh and hello black-bordered, new-framed, ''X'' rather than ''[number]'', Mana Leaks. Those will look better than Stronghold leaks, not to mention they will be a lot easier to find in mint condition.
Not to mention all the rares that of course will come back, like the already-known Troll Ascetic and Platinum Angel. Those will look pretty much exactly like the Mirrodin versions. What's not to like?
BB > WB in player preference and I know some players (by some I mean a lot) that actually add monetary value to BB versions over WB versions. That was usually compensated by the fact that the BB versions were the original cards and were usually in a lower condition than the newer WB cards. But now, with mint condition BBs? Any playable card that appears in 10th while also being a staple of other Core Sets will be worth more than their other Core Set versions. What's the difference between 8th and 9th edition Wood Elves? Next to none, and no one actually cared whether it was an 8 or a 9 written on the card. All will change with 10th, where we will (hopefully) have Wood Elves with the better artwork AND in BB like the original from Exodus.
WotC and Hasbro will also be happy. 10th will probably sell more than 7th/8th/9th combined (if they keep up with a similar power level in 10th) just because of the BBs. If there's a 10-land cycle of good duals, nevermind if they're pain, fetch, shock, or whatever lands, make sure to buy those 10th boxes asap. They won't last long.
In the long term, they satisfy everyone that's currently playing the game while making the game look REALLY exciting for the ones that are no longer playing it. I know a couple of good friends of mine who really love the game and left in the whole Mirrodin-Kamigawa fiasco, skipping Ravnica (barring a couple of packs, even though they were excited by it) and coming back now with Planar Chaos. Force Spike, Muscle Sliver, Soul Warden, Wrath of God and others coming back right after the 121 timeshifteds from TS was too good to pass. They are back and happier than ever. BB 10th will be the icing on the cake, really. This decision will please players in the past, present AND future, and will help maintain the game's health for years to come.
So, it's good for the players, it's good for sales, it's good for the game in the long-term. What's not to like, really? I'm excited as hell, and Magic is at its best starting with 9th Edition-Ravnica. One pleasant surprise after another (barring Coldsnap :p), all pointing out to a BB core set with Fanatic, Ascetic and Incinerate that will be played alongside the timeshifted block + the 4-sets block in Standard?
I for one belive this is to be real, however, Wizards wait until I stop playing Paper magic to do so.... How annoying :/
Oh well, it's not like you notice the borders on MTGO anyway
At least I'll get to play with new online cards (read: Lord of the pit)
It's harder to notice, but, there actually is a noticeable difference on MTGO as well.
I DO think we'll see Unglued style lands in 11th, or something similar to any extent.
Not that it's bad. They're doing what they have to do to keep the game going.
Too bad that you usally tap a card by putting it in horizontal. Imagine what could have been a, say, j.avon basic land which is painted in horizontal a-la unglued (full landscape). Now, THAT would let me drooling!
YAYYYYY!!! at a first time, when i voted for Troll Ascetic, I was literally SCARED of seeing it in a white border.
That sentence has opened a pandora's box on my mind: we won't have a white borde troll ascetic for at least 3 years more!!
Same for other cards that are about to be reprinted for the first time. I wish te BB thing could led at least to a heavier card paper, i dislike the core set cards, they are too..light....
My new wish list - Xth ed Wraths, Allied color pain lands with art that isn't Ice Age, Hippie, Boomerang, Paladin en-Vec (someone give this guy art that doesn't look rediculous!)
Either Wizards is smart and realizes that a black-bordered Wrath of God and black-bordered Painlands will make this Core Set sell extremely well, or they're really bold and hoping that doing black borders allows them to cut some good cards (Painlands and Urzatron, most likely, from the chatter I've read on some boards) and still sell the set.
EDIT: I don't mind this as a "one-time-only" or "once every 10-15 years" deal. But I doubt they'll be able to do this with 11th Edition and still sell the set.
Question: Now that previously expansion-only cards (like Crucible of Worlds) are going in and essentially staying black-bordered, will that hurt or help their Expansion version's prices?
Thats really good news. It will be first time I will buy some core set products, because of lack of lame white board. Another question is, will wizards give us some new language version with 10th edition?
I'm glad they finally listened. Maybe the popularity of Russian surprised them?
I wouldn't say Russian cards are popular now. Only novices buy them, only because they don't know English. Okay, maybe some collectors. But normal/pro players just hate Russian cards because of their translations. It was discussed lately because of Бебезьянить - Russian-speaking people just can't understand a thing like this. Yes, it was made to make that "funny/goofy" feeling of Pongify, but in this case, best is the enemy of good...
So, on the topic - alas, card borders aren't the most important thing in Core Set for me Maybe if they'd make it orange or something, but black... Meh.
Bluffing is never a direct lie, but a subtle misleading. If you can say "Why did you lie to me?" without looking like an idiot, it wasn't a bluff.
