Mental Misstep is banned because they couldn't be bothered to add the clause "other than Mental Misstep" to the spell.
The ability to counter a 1CC spell for free is strong, maybe debatable overpowered. The fact that you were at a significant disadvantage not running MM to counter your opponent's MMs made for a boring design envelope. And WotC at the time treating Modern like a child with an immune-defficiency disease did not help.
FoW would be fine in Modern. It's difficult to overstate how much investment goes into the "pitch a card" part if you haven't played it extensively in Legacy. If you are Forcing a spell that does not directly result in someone winning a game, you are very likely wasting the force.
While I agree with your last 2 points, Mental Misstep was not banned because it didn't have the clause "other than Mental Misstep". It was banned because it was a free, colorless counterspell that had no inherent card disadvantage.
Standard: Superfriends!
Legacy: Nic Fit / Pod
Pauper: Delvar; Tron; Flicker Stuff
Commander: Riku ("Some weird doubple spell thing happened"); Keranos ("I did a Gatherer search for 'random' and 'flip a coin.'"); Superfriends!
I fear I won't have much time to play Magic these days.
I get to watch worlds develop around me.
I get to watch great leaders, terrible oppressors, and trend setters rise and fall.
Limited, Standard, Modern, everything is a different playing field I feel I can observe, but will not actually touch.
I look forward to the stories I will hear.
And more so to the ones I will watch unfold first hand.
Isn't the unknown exciting?
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.
Releasing a product that probably less than one percent of the player-base will enjoy. I kind of doubt even that many get their hands on FtV sets (anybody have a guestimate on print-runs for these things?).
I just feel lucky that one of my friends went way out of his way to get FtV:Realms for my birthday last year.
Nice gift. My plan, at the moment, is to sit on my pre-order for MM at MSRP...if the list turns out to only have value in the mythics then I'm getting a refund and putting it towards this thing.
Maybe. I think Control Magic as a first-time foil is a sure thing (considering it is assuredly the spoiled art and was in the deck that won the first worlds).

I recently became very convinced that the spoiled art is Control Magic and came here to see if anyone else thought the same. Do you have anything stronger to support this than I do? I really only have: it looks like Control Magic and other cards that it might be are unlikely to be printed in this set.
People really? Mystical tutor definitely. The skull in the background gives it away!
Express really? Mystical tutor definitely not. The fact that it was already reprinted in FTV Exiled gives it away!

Check out my trades! Looking for foil white cards currently!
Are you blind? It's definitely Drudge Skeletons. The skull in the background gives it away!
........................
No, Drudge Skeletons will be represented by a basic Swamp.
Exactly! (Though I wasn't serious about thinking it would be in . . . 20 years of misprints would be rather hilarious, though)
Oh man, foil modern frame blue Hurricane...
It would be even more hilarious if it had a misprint from an upcoming set.
Standard - RIP Cat
Modern - Death & Taxes
Commander - Mazirek, Trostani, Angry Omnath

Considering there are numerous foil versions of Counterspell, including a foil promo, I don't think you need to worry about it being that.
I hope we get a foil Jace vs Chandra Counterspell.
Maybe. I think Control Magic as a first-time foil is a sure thing (considering it is assuredly the spoiled art and was in the deck that won the first worlds).
