But yes. Creatures are only creatures in play. Anywhere else, they are creature cards.

sorry to piggyback on this, but how does this interact with Tarmogoyf? Do timestamps apply, so that a 'goyf played after Godhead comes into play will have it's p/t defined by it's own characteristic-defining ability, or does the Godhead overrule the Goyf's ability at all times?
Timestamps will apply when playing this card (i.e. Marsh Flitter), but not with Tarmogoyf. I can't think of exactly the rule why... it's either that Godhead's CDA is applied in a later layer, or that Goyf is dependent on Godhead. Someone else is going to have to tell you exactly how, though. -Jack
I have no problems with cursing. I always feel like the sort of people who buy that cliche are the same ones who think that every bully is secretly insecure. Life isn't as simple as our kindergarten teachers taught us.
thanks- I could never figure out exactly how the 6a-e layers worked
That's why I randomly made a chart for the layers (it includes all of them, but has the plurality of layers 6 in larger font) so that I can actually understand what is going on from time to time.
Mild preparation FTW!

So Goyf gets relegated to a 1/1 because tougness = effects take place before the Awe ability and are then changed once Awe hits but a Pride of the Clouds would become a 1/1 and then get +1/+1 for each flying creature in play because that is calulated after the Awe effect of Godhead?
Correct. Goyf's ability is a characteristic-defining ability, and applies in layer 6a. Then, Godhead's ability applies in layer 6b (the 'everything else' layer). Pride of the Clouds's ability applies in layer 6d (static effect that modifies P/T without setting it), so it gets +1/+1 from the Godhead and other fliers.

I always find the easiest way to remember the change is to imagine that the creature's printed power and toughness have changed to 1/1. As in when you look down there where its p/t usually resides, if godhead is out, pretend it reads 1/1.
If you giant growth it - it becomes 4/4 until end of turn.
if you have a gaea's anthem - you're creatures will be 2/2s.
if you creature has two +1/+1 counters on it, it will be a 3/3.
Like i said, if you don;t want to get into rules lawyering during casual play, pretend your creature's have a printed power and toughenss of 1/1 and you won't go wrong!
In certain cases, such as the goyf, it may need some lawyering, but in casual - this works a hell of alot of times
Thats good advice (which I will use), someone on another thread mentioned festercreep as a use with this critter.

Can you post that here? My play group has some dull people in it who will need a visual aid.

Yes this card will cause quite a few disagreements in my play group (strictly casual and we buy the same limited # of packs per set). The chart would be a good thing...
So, if I remember my layers right, Mutavault will be a 2/2 when Godhead is out, right? I'm basing this off Mishra's factory/Humility interactions of yore
cool, godhead of awe actually combos with modular creaures!

The power/toughness altering ability only applies to creatures that are in play, correct?

That's correct - it's because counters and +x/+x effects are both applied later in Layer 6 than layer 6b, which is where the Godhead fits in.
This will be asked at prereleases a gazillion and one times, as the layering rules are insanely unintuitive.
