So I am debating whether I want to get the Core 19 that is coming out in July. Some have said it's a waste of money, others have said it's going to be one of the best because of the artwork and that it is close to the "old school" cards. What are your thoughts? I am considering doing a pre-order but wondering if it is worth it.
Yeah, you want to wait at this point. We know next to nothing about the set - it could be great, like Origins, or it could be mediocre. But it's too soon to tell.

Investment and building decks. But I am so new, I don't know which cards are the good cards so buying singles can be tricky for me.
Nothing even remotely good and nothing that could compete against the existing cards in standard.
Even the "big" cards like Nicol Bolas are pretty much pushed downwards heavily (i mean he dies to Chandra, is worse than the 4/3 Phoenix in combat and will die to any removal, and all you "gain" is the discard 1 card, and hes bad against Teferi etc. etc. too small to tackle with Lyra).
----
Very small chance that this will be rescued by unknown cards (the rare-lands probably wont be fetchlands or anything comparable, so that smells like a failure already).
As it is, pretty bad set.
Which is sad, as they could have brought back core sets with a BANG instead of this shameful one.

Yep worst set EVER.
We have seen 2 white rares, 1 blue rare, and the majority of cards spoiled are limited and sealed commons and uncommons, but the set is already the WORST SET EVER GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
We have seen 2 white rares, 1 blue rare, and the majority of cards spoiled are limited and sealed commons and uncommons, but the set is already the WORST SET EVER GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can only judge what you know about, and what we see "right now" isnt overwhelming at all.
So thats what this thread is all about. Yay or nay for what we know "right now".

If they burst out some serious big offenders, that might obviously shift, which shouldnt be any surprise.
Also, some just like artwork of a set, and for that it doesnt matter what rarity the card has. So far, the artwork looks at least better than a CGI feast, but its a core set and contains a lot of reprints and mixtures of different planes, so its not consistent at all to represent a single world.
So all of that, as it is right now, the sets quite a "nay". You are free to have a different opinion.

Per the Copenhagen interpretation of Magic spoilers, every set is simultaneously a pile of worthless crap and the next Mirrodin's Destiny until it's fully spoiled. And Mark Rosewater is responsible for both creating that worthless pile of crap, thus destroying Magic, and wrecking Magic with those grossly overpowered cards, thus destroying Magic, at the same time.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Unfortunately unless your really lucky, most of the time buying booster pack or sealed products is a waste of money

Investment and building decks. But I am so new, I don't know which cards are the good cards so buying singles can be tricky for me.
I know that feeling but the truth is, buying boosters is a bad move from the investment perspective unless you are a singles trader. Many reasons:
Randomness. Even a very valuable set like Dominaria only holds around 10% more value then what you pay for it (if you get a good deal to begin with!). 10% extra mean value sounds good at first glance but because MTG sets are so freaking huge the variance of this bet is quite high. Buying a box is a very risky investment and you will need to buy a lot of product to smooth out this probability.
The above mean is also calculated assuming you can move every single card you open in order to realise the market value. Trading away every single card that you don't want is a huge chore and the more product you buy to smooth out your investment more work you have to put in managing your collection. Unless you own a online shop, it's unlikely you can move all this product by yourself so the chances are you will have tons of cards laying around that you can't trade away because you will never meet someone willing to buy it.
The last factor is depreciation. Magic cards tends to lose value over time (average wise) because the supply increase with more printings, new sets will shift meta games devaluing old cards and finally because of rotation. So the more time you take to move your product more money you lose.
Of course this is strictly from a investment perspective. From a consumer perspective, it's a great deal if: (1) you play limited, (2) you like collecting then, so having random cards lying around is a non-issue, (3) you play in a closed ecosystem (everyone play with your cards, you're not in an arms race with other players).
If neither of these 3 points apply to you, a suggest building your collection from singles, which is a bit boring I admit but it's the best way to proceed for sure.
It's pretty simple. There is nothing inherently special about Core Set 19 or 'Magic's 25th Anniversary' or anything, Ok?
With that out of the way..
Are you a completely new player? Do you need to establish (or just beef up) your stock of 'basic' cards like Lightning Bolt, Llanowar Elves and stuff like that? If 'yes', then sure, I'd pick up some. At that point, you're not really cracking packs for value--you're just cracking for deckbuilding stock. And Core sets are *GREAT* for that purpose.
Or, rre you are an established player? If you are an established player, I don't care WHAT they print at Mythic or Rare. It just doesn't matter at all. You will never break even buying packs. Listen to me very carefully here: N.E.V.E.R. It always makes more sense to just buy the singles you need. Yes, even the stupid 'Buy-a-box' promo. You will spend way less. Believe me.
Buying packs is ALWAYS a good idea when you're starting out and NEVER an good idea once you have your basic staples covered.
That's about as simple (and honest) a breakdown as you'll see. I've been playing for 18 years and it's been true for me for well over a decade now. Take it to the bank.
It´s too early to tell, but I think it looks good so far. We get two much needed reprints, an kick-ass elder dragon cycle that new players are going to adore, lots of classic style cards, pretty good artwork and a draft format that looks slow (very few aggressive two drops at common, no attack mechanic and lots of great removal). I don´t see much that will impact standard so far, but most of the rares and half of the mythics are yet to be spoiled, which is where all the good stuff for standard usually is.
As with every set, people have way too high expectations for it. They want tons of value reprints at rare (but not the cards that they own, only the ones that they need), every single card should be standard relevant and it should contain several new staples for modern, legacy and edh, and they feel like they should profit from opening packs and selling the cards. It´s just not the way it is, it never is.

Pretty good summary.
I'd like to add that as an "established player" I only every crack packs when i sit down to play draft or sealed with friends in a casual environment. We draft every set, and only thereafter i can reasonably judge the set and have a feeling of what is possible with the cards within. The only sets i've skipped on have been Iconis Masters and Masters 25, where i was very very sure i didn't want to spend a dime on the box and indeed only buy some singles right after release.
I think the toughest thing this core set has going for it is that it follows up the fantastic Magic Origins set (as a core set)
With most of the set spoiled, there seems to be little that I'm interested in. I was hoping for more on the side of reprints (though Crucible is fantastic), and there seems to be a lot of sideboard cards or jank at rare (which is kind of expected of a typical core set). Like most core sets when they came out, I'll probably just skip them, and wait for the jank I like to tank and spend the $10 to get what I need for EDH and ignore the rest.
Though this set isn't for me, I'm sure some of these planeswalkers will do something for standard.
low mana elder dragons are nice
the planeswalkers have trash abilities
no rare lands
reprints for the sake of reprints; core 2019 is everything wrong with mtg
standard won't budge before the big rotation
I'll lose a lot of games at the pre-release to Skyrider Patrol
This set's potential is going to be entirely decided by Standard Rotation and Ravnica block. There is a bunch of good tribal cards that could see play after rotation but are probably too weak for the current format. The good thing about core sets is that they are focused around the basic interactions of MtG so if you want to build a collection quick and be able to use the cards you get effectively then I would recommend this set over all others.
Personally I think this set is pretty bad. It has a lot of fun EDH, tribal, and planeswalker cards but doesn't offer many "standard staples" to make money/trades off of.
not that impressed now that the full thing is spoiled.
sure, core sets get pushed as beginner or introductory sets, but this one feels very lazy mechanically.
the walkers are kind of trash
scapeshift and crucible feel thrown in to sell the set, to bring their secondary prices down, or both. i'm not a fan of pack lotto or reprinting cards just to reprint cards.
the past few sets i've picked up multiple boxes of, this one has a handful of mediocre singles i might pick up just to try out in various casual decks and nothing more.

The whole point of a core set is to reprint cards for the sake of reprinting cards. This is the ONE set where they don't have to stick to a set theme or whatever. This is the place to print safety valves for potentially problematic cards in future sets. This is the purpose of a core set. Did you see what happened to standard in the last 2 years with core sets being dissolved? Ya, the worst set of bannings since mirrodin block.
This is a "necessary evil" for wotc to protect the game from itself.
Personally, i'm glad these are back. It was a bad idea to get rid of them in the first place.
I don't mind a lot of the rares and most of the mythics seem fun at least. Don't know how playable these dragons are going to be beyond Bolas, but it's nice to see so many new cards in a core set. They definitely have to print some old money in core sets or else they wouldn't sell. Pretty much no one interested in buying boxes needs the chaff that comes in the common (and most of the uncommon) slots. They can't do much to legacy, but they can definitely try to mitigate the cost of modern and commander to some extent. Frankly, a lot of the reprints the last couple sets have been pretty welcome.
I'm not sure I like the core sets being back, but the balance team has proven they need the extra design space from a core set because they cannot balance a standard format without it.

This. 32 cards that are pretty much all Limited-fodder commons are not the way to make your decision on whether to buy a product for Constructed.
