So Maro intimated we'd see 'lessons learned' start to appear with HoD.
Early to tell much but it looks like some give in the cost department but wayyyy grudging because of the drawback which is a big deal. Makes all control's counters cost double basically because of 'lands don't untap next untap step'.
I sincerely hope they learned better than this?
It's actually a question... and this is where we discuss new cards right?
Do people think they're going to print more than one wrath in a small set? This has got to be THE wrath, control is begging for help to balance the midrange - aggro - control triumvirate which USED to be balanced and fun MTG.
What have they been lacking? A wrath that can compete, better counters, and kill spells that also do more than one thing just like all the creatures that give you 2 and 3 upsides on top of a body. Instead of an upside or versatility they give us downside which ends up being a 6 CMC wrath just mush it over 2 turns... though if you cast ANYTHING else during their turn (counter or kill) that mana also doesn't untap and you've spent double for those spells too.
As in, because the card has Bontu's art on it? I don't see how that's relevant at all.
I think the original premise of the question is, if Hour of Devastation is supposed to be a set where WotC shows that they have learned their lesson regarding card balance, this card doesn't reflect that. I believe in the original spoiler thread someone stated that they would rather have a 4-drop sweeper than this one. I would probably agree that with the choices being a 3-drop sweeper with a big downside and a 5-drop sweeper with a minor upside, it's still going to be hard for control to compete with resilient aggressive and midrange decks going forward. Note that in most circumstances if you sweep with this card on turn 3, your opponent not only gets to reestablish their board on their next turn, but also gets an attack in with those creatures since you will be essentially tapped out on your turn 4. This means that you probably cannot use this card if your opponent still has cards in hand since the likelihood is high that they will fill the board again after you sweep, and then get a free full-board strike on you the following turn.
Is it possible that this card is not an example of WotC learning its lesson? Sure. But if you're not allowed to critique a card based on the assumption that the card is an example of WotC learning their lesson, you wouldn't be able to critique any card as being or not being an example of WotC learning their lesson, since you wouldn't know for sure whether each card was or was not an example of that.
I thought it was fairly obvcious. 3 mana wrath. Destroys all creatures. Bontu and the gang are indestructible. Bontu can only attack if creatures died that turn. If its a cycle and its behaving like I think its behaving, this mana-lock cycle would allow each god to attack/block that turn.

It's hard to say if they learned their lessons in this set. Besides Bontu's Last Reckoning there really hasn't been too much in the removal department, but we still have about 60% of the set left to go.

Honestly the only thing I could think of with that thread title.

So red gets One with Nothing?
A new variant of Firestorm could be nice...
Does blue get a new Timetwister?
This is hazoret's last reckoning art
And that ain't look like fighting bolas
