Am I the only one who things this thing is a control player's wet dream? I mean, you're probably not going to cast it on turn 3 but mid to late game, you're not going to have to tap out to board wipe, and that is HUGE. Even in cases where you are forced to cast it t3, it's likely a 3 or 4 to 1 blowout and your opponent is unlikely to be able to capitolize on t4 when you dont untap. Anybody else have thoughts on this card?
Biggest issue with the card is that its effect is narrow.
Even "aggro" decks play planeswalkers and vehicles and have stuff that comes back from the graveyard.
You will get a 2for1 easily out of this, and even a 3for1 against zombies and the like, but even that isnt really fantastic, as this will provide you with some issues.
The biggest deal is if you even need it at all.
Red has much better mass removal right now if you just want to deal with a bunch of 3/3 size creatures. Especially Chandra will wipe the board and stay alive doing so, which is a huge benefit.
----
This also costs double black, which is at least annoying on your mana.
It also works not really well with counterspells, as you have to cast this and then rely on your counterspell and you will not untap after that, so thats a real issue as you set yourself up to a turn of weakness, which is simply not necessary, if you can avoid it with instant speed removal (which also works better with Torrential Gearhulk anyway).
----
Its not a terrible card, and you certainly can find decks and especially metagames in which it shines.
But right now and the forseeable future of standard, thats not the case for this card (and for sure not as a 4-of).
I agree with the above poster-
as exciting as a 3-mana wrath is,
the drawback is seriously potent.
It's also a bad drawback for a control deck-
sure, you get a discounted wrath,
but anything you use that discount for (counters, draw, etc),
is going to set you back twice as hard.
Look at it this way:
without some sort of shenanigans (Paradox Engine, etc),
this card costs not 3, but 6,
and even worse, it "doubles" the cost of anything else you cast until your next turn.

I have two thoughts on this right now. Late game "As foretold" at three or a spin from marvel during there attack step. Seems good to me but not back breaking.

You can probably create great CA against aggro decks that want to go all in. Along with precision discard, this will be backbreaking for decks that like to rely on early creature aggression. This card is also friends with decks that can naturally generate mana from nonland sources like Ad Nauseam. And by natural I mean you they already have the means to do that in their decklists.
Interesting but suffers from the Dark Confidant and his 2 mana wannabe cousins syndrome for narrow playability. My aggro decks feel uneasy while Yahenni, Undying Partisan EDH is rejoicing.

I do find it amusing that there's synergy with Bontu herself, that if you cast Bontu's Last Stand, it's most likely that it'll awaken Bontu and let her attack.

There is speculation on a cycle of Last Stand cards, each rare and one for each God that has a powerful effect, but the lands don't untap clause as well. I'm assuming they will all awaken each of the gods by having an activation tailored to their effect.
I can certainly see this showing up in Modern to deal with the fast creature based combo decks like Devoted Druid or Reliquary Knight (not to mention blunting Affinity, Boggles, or Infect). Legacy and other unusual formats (Commander and the like) have Toxic Deluge though and I don't see this taking that card's spot.
Playing this on turn three means on turn four you can still drop a land and playing a one mana spell (Bolt, Push, Path, Visions, Thoughtseize, ect...) or a threat (Tasigur). Not ideal but workable, especially when it was Wrath turn three or die. Or you have the unlucky situation of not having an untapped land to play or didn't draw enough lands for a four mana wrath, ect...
I'm not saying this will appear everywhere by any means but I can easily see this replacing Damnation in some Modern decks/sideboards.
I agree--Bontu's Last Reckoning will be swell in Modern. Aggro like Affinity/Zoo/Merfolk/Infect/Bogles has always been fast enough to make me cry for 3-mana unconditional board wipes, and creature-based combo is getting faster than ever with the Vizier of Remedies-Devoted Druid infinite mana combo (which means that any sorcery-speed removal must be cast ASAP the moment they stick a Devoted Druid, and in the unlucky case that my only removal in hand is a sorcery-speed board wipe, I'd rather have that board wipe cost 3 mana than 4).
Heck, I can see Bontu's Last Reckoning seeing play in Legacy, regardless of how popular Toxic Deluge already is. While Toxic Deluge is pretty good at eliminating X/1's (e.g. Empty the Warrens) while leaving your X/2's (e.g. Deathrite Shaman) alive, or killing stuff like X/4's (e.g. Batterskull) and lower while leaving your really fat stuff (e.g. Knight of the Reliquary) alive, it's not so fun against Sneak Show when you kick yourself down to 5 life to kill the Emrakul, the Aeons Torn they Show and Telled in, and then find you have no life margin to tank their later Sneak Attack into another Emrakul. Bontu's Last Reckoning gives you that life margin.
