Hey, I noticed Embalm is pretty close to living reflection. It's different in that instead of etb it's a variant of unearth. One thing I find that's funny is the judges said that there would be tons of logitical issues. One was they couldn't justify commissioning art for that many tokens. Did anyone else notice the similarities?
If you are referring to the "living reflection" mechanic used by Jonathon Loucks in the 2nd Great Designer search, then no, not at all.
To put it simply Embalm is the creature version of Flashback while Living Reflection would be the creature version of Replicate (a single time). Both give you 2 uses but they do it in a very different way and at different times. Embalm is similar to creatures like Soul of Zendikar while Living Reflection is a decendant of Stangg.
It also feels like a cheap way to do DFCs (mummies are basically werewolves that transform in the graveyard, I'll be interested to see if there is an creatures with that are significantly different when embalmed.
It's sort of interesting that they are finding all these different ways to do "Dual State" cards in the most grokable fashion.
I hoping we will see more of these sort of things were they are willing to splash for the extra Art for cards that change state. Imagine if we get Monstrosity pack with "monster" tokens"
Or a return of Level Up with tri sided cards.
Eventually we should be able to get a "meld creature that is created by embalming 3 separate cards, that then Levels up and Transforms back into its face sides.

Yup. It's not the same at all. However, it does suffer from the same problem...
The biggest issue I have with living reflection is that it makes a wide variety of tokens that can coexist without the card that tells you what they are. If living reflection moved up to uncommon, perhaps then you might want to toy around with the copy only staying around as long as the creature with living reflection.
the cool thing with the embalm tokens is : zombies, mummies look great, two arts for one card, yey. and they have the abilities of the creature, most tokens dont have that(not just keywords ,which many tokens have or none at all). if they make a token have a different ability than a creature when embalmed then that's a new design space
other than that, yeah it's not very new or exciting, it is cool though
the question is, will the tokens appear in the same booster that you get the card? or you will have to hunt for them...?
I thought embalm would work better if they simply used transform for them (as they want a different art with the token anyway and for that the best is to have the token in the same booster, which is 2 cards).
They could easily made Double Faced Cards that you embalm and put them in play transformed , would have worked just as well (but comes with the problem of drafting the cards, DFC are annoying in draft and having "multiples" in the same booster would be terrible too ; but in the end, DFC so far ment that you could have 2+ rares in the same booster, which is a super nice upside).
DFC would also allow them to more easily change the other side with some other abilities.
Right now, the "zombie" form is the very same as the normal card, which is boring in my eye.
Living reflection is more like Desolation Twin, TBH. Except for a few execution differences. (Desolation Twin's living reflection is a "cast" trigger, which was a bit of an Eldrazi thing, so it can't be countered, but you can't use it with reanimator. Given that these are Eldrazi, "can't use it with reanimator" is more germane.)
I also saw this as another "creatures with flashback" variant like unearth and scavenge. But since "flashback variants" are pretty much standard for graveyard sets...

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

Living Reflection, however, is a rather different ability.

Loyal Cathar / Unhallowed Cathar made that transform into a zombie pretty good and it played well too.

The (only) other penumbra is Penumbra Kavu, though Myr Sire, persist/undying, Wurmcoil Engine, Tuktuk the Explorer and the spirit ability from Innistrad (and Avacyn's Collar, Requiem Angel, and Slayer's Plate, though this variant also exists as Teysa, Orzhov Scion from way back in Guildpact) all reflect something similar. Oh, and two creatures from Jund.
