Dusk and Dawn2WW
Sorcery
Destroy all creatures with power 3 or greater. 3WW Exile Dusk and Dawn from your graveyard: Return all creature cards with power 2 or less from your graveyard to your hand.
How hard is this? Is it really that important that Dusk is cast as a spell itself?

Yes, it is. For one thing, they've already got embalm for this set. Two different mechanics that can't be countered would be a very VERY bad idea. Second of all, it lets them play with the idea of multi-typed cards, like creatures that turn into instants or enchantments that turn into sorceries. Also, to a lesser extent, it means that they can do some CMC matters stuff with the cards, due to them having a combined CMC cost. The main issue, though, is that the uncounterable nature of the proposed idea is too much, especially for the context of this block.

Cycling can't be countered either. And in the case of Renewed Faith turns it into "1W, Instant, Draw a card, gain 2 life, this spell cannot be countered by anything besides Disallow".

Fair point, I completely forgot about cycling being in this set as well! Which just makes for ANOTHER mechanic that would prevent them from making aftermath an uncounterable mechanic.
I actually like the design. It's really practical for remembering it's in the graveyard, and the weird design doesn't matter as much when you've got the cards fanned out in your hand.
Isn't that a complaint that also also applies to the insanely popular original split cards as well as the ones with fuse?
Insanely popular? Ok...
I didn't really like sideways cards then either. This iteration is obnoxious because at least then both sides were the same direction. Having the text for the second part separated without art would have been my preference.
Mostly your post just complains that I don't like it. I gave my reasons, you're just giving attitude.
I can go around and quote Wizard employees on market research if you like, but it has been repeatedly stated that the reason they returned split cards in Ravnica-block because they were popular during the first tenure and that they knew from the start of design of Return to Ravnica-block that they would want new split cards due to their popularity during original Ravnica-block. And fuse was well-received as well.
One common complaint about Time Spiral is that people wished for more split cards in the colors other than red.
This is the fifth time split card variants are used in a block design. That does seem indicative of a success story - and success here means positive feedback from the audience.

You are probably used to people being obnoxious and not stating what they want, but I point it out: I'm wondering and honestly so. You have given your reasons and I wanted to understand how these reasons fit with the established popularity of split cards over the years. I'm not complaining. I'm curious about a perceived discrepancy.
I can understand that you act defensive sensing "attitude" but please don't. Don't let social media turn you jaded to inquisitive requests.

[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
I have a theory- the response to these is significantly coloured by the fact that they are different in an unexpected way, and therefore initially jarring to people, but as soon as people get used to them, the response will be significantly more positive.
I also reckon the quality of the images provided of the leaked card, particularly how bland it makes the art look, has made people more negative to the mechanic.
The mechanic is fine, the execution is not so fine. I think most people who dislike the template dislike it because of the poor graphic design, not because it looks strange or different than what they're used to see.
The aesthetics of the split is off. I find myself distracted by the sideways text and half art while I'm reading the top. It's bad formatting. How often do you see this in a newspaper or a website you visit? How about print ads? Making things easier for people to read is the norm. The GY sideways thing seems to me them overthinking it and trying too hard to be different. If you like it great. To me it's a fumble just like mushing the colorwheel around (playing color favorites GW anyone?), pulling back removal and counters, and purposefully making battlecruiser magic the way of the land.
I personally don't call attention to the future tricks or what I can cast from my GY while playing. Seems silly.
Even when I'm T-gearhulking the only indication I like to give is my GY spread with card names so I can see them at a glance. At least the last time they were all the same direction. The use of the effects is fine, I've even used a few in standard and it's fun, but just don't make it so bloody ugly.
The layout is jarring (and not in that it's new and different but i'll get used to it fashion that the original split cards, the future shifted cards and the masterpieces/invocations had). I don't know if i'll ever be able to entirely get used to seeing these cards in my hand BUT I do think that they will serve the function of being a special different spell in the graveyard very well.
Those look awesome. Completely gorgeous.
Fire someone at WotC and hire this guy.
The text could also read 'cast from the graveyard then exile' with just one big pic on top as well but the mockups are beautiful. The stuff they printed is just lame.
Yeah those proxies are really awesome.
I've seen others that are better than the one wotc actually want with as well.
But those proxies are awesome
Just shows how much they missed on these.
Although the current artworks might not all work in that templating, if it were the original design the artists could have that space to work with and I imagine they would be even better.
While I do like the proxies, I feel like it's the same situation as vehicles: An immediate signal to players new and old that this card functions differently.
With the proxies linked earlier, my thought without reading would be "Oh they made fuse clearer."
I think they could've done better with the current design, but I don't think it was a bad idea.
Well, in the prerelease and standard ( and even modern ) i will be turning around my hand just soo oponent thinks i have one of those split cards in hand

I was never a big fan of split cards from any of the sets. If I had to pick, the Invasion/Time Spiral block are still the best looking.
These work just as well rotated like Wizards' aftermath frame.
The only downside is people need to know how to read the rules text (the Aftermath part).
