Well so far, Kaladesh has shown us several different planeswalkers and I'm wondering what the community are really thinking about them. What do you like? What don't you like? Do you have a favorite? Do see any potential in them?
All format perspectives are welcome.
Chandra, Torch of Defiance- Well here's another Chandra but she's looking good. Two +1 abilities give her some options, a not too shabby -3 and good ult (if you can ever use it.) All of this for 4 mana.
Dovin Baan- I'm not a WU but I like him. His art is very well done and it's always nice to see another non-human planeswalker. His abilities are practical and at least decent. He seems like the type of planeswalker who enjoys the long game.
Nissa, Nature's Artisan- I swear this one is G personified. Some life gain, land ramp and a more powerful version of Overrun as an ult. I don't know if she's bad but she feels too 1-dimensional for me for as much mana as she costs.
Nissa, Vital Force- Well, at least she is better than the last one. I won't say she's extremely good but she at least has a multitude of abilities.
Saheeli Rai- For 3 mana you're getting an okay utility planeswalker. Not really much to say here other than I could see how she could be useful.
I only play Standard but here is my opinion on the walkers. Chandra will be a 3-4 of in all Red decks except the 18 mountain variety. She really fits in at the top of a curve, as well as mid-range and ramp strategies. People who don't normally play Red will be doing so for the next 18 months. Only downside I can think of is...I played a lot of Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker and it felt awful minusing and then getting run over by a 1 power goblin token. Of course she is only 4 mana though.
Nissa; almost as good. Probably a 2-3 of in most Green strategies. The Green Gearhulk may take some spots from her in aggressive strategies; but it's hard to imagine less than 2 of her in any 75 that taps for Green.
Dovin, does what you need him to do. Pretty much a toned down, Jace, Architect of Thought. Will definitely see play in control strategies even if he looks a bit boring.
Saheeli Rai needs to be built around. Will probably end up in a broken deck in an older format, but for Standard it's hard to tell right now. Fevered Visions seems superior to her in the current UR deck. Not sure if she is supposed to be like a Domri Rade/ Ajani, Caller of the Pride in an all creature/artifact/vehicle deck, or supposed to be a double gearhulk combo piece in a control deck. When she was first spoiled she kind of reminded me of Thassa, God of the Sea, in that she scries until she hit's you like a truck, and cannot be wrathed. Of course, Indestructible is more than just wrath protection, but Saheeli's 'minus' is obviously easier to turn on and has so many more applications.
