Filigree Familiar
Artifact Creature - Fox (U)
When Filigree Familiar enters the battlefield, you gain 2 life.
When Filigree Familiar dies, draw a card
[2/2]
MY THOUGHTS: I'm really digging this metal fox. I like creatures that do things on the way in and out. I can see myself running a budget deck with 4 of these plus ways to enhance the benefits.
Fantastic card. It's pure value, a 2/2 for 3 which gains you a couple of life is already solid and when you add the death draw a card trigger, being an artifact creature for Delerium etc. and fitting perfectly into an Emerge curve you get something that's sure to see a bunch of play.
The card that will be impossible to get after 3rd pick in draft.
You think it will make it to 3rd pick? I'd be surprised if I saw it third pick myself. I expect to be first/second picking this and running it in every limited deck. Of course, I put a very high value on staying open when I draft.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.

This guy is going places. In the post affinity world, Sad Robot's ramp was a pretty important part of why it was an all star, but in the current environment, the 2 life might just be better, and being 3 instead of 4 mana works better in the Sakura-Tribe Elderless world we live in today.
The card that will be impossible to get after 3rd pick in draft.

Well, you wouldn't first pick it, and there are a lot of high value uncommons like essence extraction, or shrewd negotiation that I would value higher. Likewise, arborback stomper doesn't replace itself, but the 5 life + the huge body makes it preferable in some decks. Kaladesh doesn't seem to be hurting for small bodies. I'm not seeing a lot of big bodies at common and uncommon. Probably to encourage us to use the crew mechanic.
If you're in an energy archetype, there are uncomons you simply have to take over it no matter what, like longtusk cub or harnessed lightning. So by the time you picked what you absolutely need. It'll be gone from the pack.
I would first pick it actually. Unless the format makes 2/2s really bad, then Filagree familiar is going to end up being one of the better playables in every deck. If I don't open a bomb or good removal (which happens more often than you'd think), I'd snap up Filagree Familiar in a heartbeat.
Obviously you wouldn't take Familiar over a gearhulk though

If flying is at a premium like in Innnistrad and I'm in white, I'd pick aerial responder over it. And it's not even rare. The flying/vigilance is well worth the "extra card if it dies" loss to me. And of course there's cloudblazer.
And again, if you're in an energy build, too many cards are important picks so you'd have to let this go.
If nothing stands out of pack 1 though, it's 1st pickable.

Aerial Responder is a straight up bomb. I'm betting you will be first picking it over most rares. Cloudblazer is similarly powerful but is two color, so I don't know if I would first pick it over familiar, it depends on the speed of the format and how good WU is.
I don't think we are actually arguing over anything here.

Who said we were arguing? lol.
To me, the format has to be on the slow side. People will be making tokens with fabricate, you need time to crew your vehicles and you need time to amass energy. In a fast format, energy and vehicles wouldn't matter much. The same way they slowed the format down and wrecked removal for soulbond (God I hated that mechanic)
This could see play in Modern, too. It's a cuter Kitchen Finks, except you draw instead of a second lifegain and it's colorless.
On a completely unrelated note, this is going to look great in foil.
It's not all that similar to Kitchen Finks. Kitchen Finks COMES BACK! after it dies. You get a 3/2 and then a 2/1. If this came back then it would be nearly the same but given that you only get a single 2/2 it's not at all modern playable.

Actualy i think it IS very similar. It triggers 2 times, too. Actually for UW Control it could be even better than kitchen finks because it draws a card AND gains life.
It's not even close to as good. You don't get the 2nd creature. Finks gives you a 3/2 and 2 life, then a 2/1 and 2 life and there are also lots of ways to combo Finks. This card is a smaller creature to start with and you don't get the 2/1 and it's 2 less life...not close in terms of power level.

I have to agree here. Finks is three mana invested for two 2 reasonably costed bodies and 4 life a lot of times...that's insane in and of itself. Coupled with the fact that it's part of infinite combos is another strike in its favor. The fox is good, don't get me wrong. It's very good and I can see it doing a fine impersonation in a non G or W deck. But at that point I think the decks are looking To cheese a combo win (ad naus, goryo's, etc) or are chock full of things that need to close out a game (grxis's gurmag + enablers). Decks like faeries/merfolk are trying to tempo or set up a T4/5 kill and the card just doesn't impact the game enough. The decks running finks are looking to buy more time/apply more pressure or stick finks in a deck that can toss counters around and he's incredibly annoying and hard to deal with for a lot of decks. Even in some of these lists he's not a 4 of (jund/elves MAY only side 1-2).
Is it a headache for burn? Sure. Does he block an eldrazi fatty w/o trample? Sure. Is he going to replace finks? No. TBH I can't think of a deck that wants finks 5-8.
That being said; the card is an excellent budget replacement in modern, EDH applicable, and quite annoying for standard if you can toss a buff his way to punch through sylvan advocate or something similar.
I do think fox and finks fill a similar role. Generally 2 life and a "free" blocker is better than drawing a card but the fox has the bonus(or drawback) of being an extra card type, and not costing colored mana. Im sure there are a lot of decks willing to play some number of a finks like card that can't afford finks's color cost. Tron stands out in particular, as its a colorless anti aggro card that replaces itself. Other fringe decks may also be interested in it.

Using it on this little fox to get the Green or White Gearhulk earlier.
