As an additional cost to cast Eldritch Evolution, sacrifice a creature.
Search your library for a creature card with converted mana cost X or less, where X is 2 plus the sacrificed creature's converted mana cost. Put that card onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library. Exile Eldritch Evolution.
Even with my coming standard Deck-Build i managed things like Turn3 Thought-Knot Seer, Turn4 Reality Smasher or even Turn4 Dragonlord Atarka! And you can do all that without committing to much Deck-slots for Ramp-Spells.
card is crazy poweful but the comparison with Birthing Pod doesn't make much sense.
Birthing pod is an engine, a "build around me" card that will allow for steady improvement of the creatures in the battlefield.
Eldritch Evolution is closer to a toolbox enabler + "cheat big dudes in" tool.
you'll play it with stuff that's able to reduce their own mana costs like dudeswithdelve or stuff like Bedlam Reveler
it certainly will play quite well with the new Emerge dudes.
those cards are not seen in a Birthing Pod deck, because they simply don't play well with it, but are crazy good with Eldritch Evolution.
This card will generate decks that are A LOT different from anything that Birthing Pod has ever done.
all that being said, I think it's certain that this card will help define the current standard format.
I'll be REALLY surprised if there's not a tier 1 deck running 4 of this thing.
I'll also not be surprised if it ends up being played in modern.
legacy will most likely just keep using Green Sun's Zenith instead.
Wow, now this is a brew I like. when I first saw this card, my first thought was turn three madness cast incorrigible youths, then turn four sac it to eldritch evolution and get atarka, but I never considered getting all the way to newlamog turn 4. this is a deck I would love to play, you take risks, it's combo "ish", and it demands that your opponent actually play the game of magic with you and not just fart out the next best card on curve, swing, and win. It's everything a red player could want, except without using red cards.
A more accurate comparison would be to Natural Order. No it's not a functional reprint but it's about as close as WotC dare tread to it in modern.
