Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.

So other people can't voice their opinion of this set? While there are a few good cards in this set (mostly for standard, a couple for EDH),most of the rares in this set are crap, and a few of the commons/uncommons were so close to being good but fell way short. I hate when people just blindly defend the designers ect. that's why we continue to get this garbage. I honestly think the reason Wizards put the treasures in here was to sell packs, otherwise sells would be super low.
Funny, I hate it when people call the cards terrible before they are ever played.
Every set printed since MTGS existed has been called "the worst set ever" in previews. Every... single...one...
In my opinion, this set is a godsend for Pauper, but a bane to Modern / Legacy.

Because I've played since Ice age and know a thing or two? Almost all of the rares are uncommons shifted up in rarity, I mean scatter to the winds is a cancel that you can play for six(!) to make a land a 3/3 and get it killed. At rare. The list goes on and on. Also, this set is not the worst ever, that would be Homelands....this set has some good cards for standard and like two for EDH but my point still stands that this set is bad.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

This set is clearly geared towards limited. Nothing wrong with that. As a liimited set, it seems decent.
Not everything can be designed for you. Bu there are constructed crads here and there.
The problem is that everything seems to be about limited nowadays. Even Modern Masters which is supposed to be about making Modern more affordable was mostly about limited and fairly lackluster in the reprint aspect...
I don't know. Khans had plenty of constructed stuff. So did Theros and so did Return to Ravnica and innistrad.
Of course, not 100% of modern masters could just be modern staples, that would have made a set that couldn't be played in limited, which means lower sales for WotC, which means they might not have printed it at all.
We'll see how the limited goes with this set. I don't have much hopes of this set in terms of constructed but we'll see. At least the new ulamog is better than the old one. There are a lot of bulk rares though.

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.
Just because people say that every set sucks, doesnt mean that all the sets are good.
Yes some sets are going to suck.
This set sucks.
If someone offered you to draft this vs some of the best draft formats from the past (Inn, MMA1, ROE) you would pick the better sets. Or even open packs for value.
I dont know why people take it personally when someone on the internet calls a set stupid.
Some sets are going to suck, especially compared to widely beloved sets... like Zendikar..which this was supposed to be based on.

We remember Zendikar for the fetches, Goblin Guide, Iona, Warren Instigator, Bloodghast, and maybe Oracle of Mul Daya and Lotus Cobra. For cards still played in Modern, we got Vines of the Vastwood, Pyromancer's Ascension (sort of), Valakut, Spreading Seas, and Spell Pierce.

I like how the first two cards you named won me more games in draft then the other ones you mentioned as good cards did. Beside that I have to admit i didn't like the old Zen very much for draft, even less so for Rise. In my long memory playing this game my favorite set to draft had to be original Ravnica, that was so much fun and the color combinations I could make was... well actually all of them. The worst set in my personal opinion is the one I came into the game on, Urza block, but that's because i just hate how dumb those cards where (Still makes me angry when I see uncommons from that set in my play groups that end up breaking our games... the rares are worse but the damn uncommons always seem to make me more angry)
That all being said this set looks like it should be very fun to draft, I'll hold of my judgement of the set as a whole until I've actually had a chance to play this.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.
If you pay attention to what Aaron and Rosewater have been saying about the 2 set blocks you would have already known this was going to be a weak set. One of their complaints about the 3 set block was the power level of each set. The first set had the powerful cards. The later sets only built on those cards to add to them but not up the power level.
They even said point blank. The first set will be a weaker set and the following set will be a much stronger set with the new system.
The point still stands that this set is above averagely bad as a whole, and things are at a questionable rarity.

Wizards is running out of ideas lol. 22 years 88 sets later...the tank is running empty. Its bound to happen. The only thin they have LEFT is to rehash old cards, slap new CMC on them, rearrange the rarity, etc. I mean...you can literally only do SO MUCH with a card game. They could go the YGO rout, and add in an "extra deck". That would be new. Well, new for MTG at least. But no, they wont.
I want to say this now. Get it out, and hope people will accept it. The old MTG is dead and gone. Its NEVER coming back. Period. Trust me, it pains me to say it, it really does. But in the end, isn't that the only reason you're excited throughout the spoiler season? To spot out new cards that might fit an existing idea or sprout a new one?
I get that if you go through spoiler season and go "Meh, this set is the worst" is kinda counter productive if your only parameter is to fit your existing ideas. But on the other hand, those statements are mostly subjective, so it fits the bill that they use subjective parameters.
Only being a casual player makes spoiler season very easy for me to go through. I just read through the cards to see if there are new toys to use in existing decks, cards that might kick-start a new concept or cards that might look powerful enough that sometime down the road I would be glad that I paid the preemptive expense to collect up, say Monastery Swiftspears.
I bought a play set of Strionic Resonator because it reminded me of Rings of Brighthearth, which during Lorwyn-standard was fringe playable but still a really interesting card/effect. That the rings have picked up value immensely was something I did not foresee back then. There are some deck ideas that I've scrapped because I didn't want to go through the expense of acquiring additional Rings.
I still hope that some day a set/block will be heavier into triggered effects so I could mess around with the Resonator.
No.... Champions of Kamigawa was the worst set. This set has some of the worst rares and mythics though. Just like the first Zendikar, i'm more excited for all the commons and uncommons. And lands.
Say that to rares like:
gifts ungiven
through the breach
glimpse of nature
Azusa, lost but seeking
kokusho
Yosei
Meloku, the clouded mirror
sensei's divining top
Kiki jiki
Boseiju, who shelters all
Minamo
Forbidden orchard
Eight and a half tails
Isamaru, hound of konda
And this is just champions look at betrayers and see how many expensive rares are. Smh on people that comment with no base.
Try drafting that set or playing in standard at the time (post affinity banning). It was one of the biggest snooze fests out there.
I agree. We should all only play g/x decks because they are the most objectively fun and anyone who disagrees does not know the truth about EDH. Everyone should just play their decks because interaction beyond high fiving about how many land are in play is unfun and equivalent to casting Stasis while kicking puppies. I for one will never play with anyone who casts tutors, removal spells, blue cards, things I arbitrarily decide I don't like but will probably cast myself later.
And still Khans was a good block, Innistrad fantastic while Avacyn Restored was pretty bad etc. Sometimes a set will suck. If it had been a trend going on for some time you could be correct, but WOTC has done ups and downs for 10 years + Once in a while the power creep reaches a plateau, and that's good for the game long term.
Having said that, I agree that this set seems a little uninspired.
Looks like many of you have never lived through the early days of Magic. The Dark, Homelands, Fallen Empires. Back in MY day...
I did, and your comment is irrelevant in that regard. Back in these days, limited was not a thing, each of these sets were self-contained and you would build your poop deck to play with friends on the kitchen table with variably interpreted rules. Also, 8-cards boosters.

Try drafting that set or playing in standard at the time (post affinity banning). It was one of the biggest snooze fests out there.
Theros block is worse because it's so bad even with all their experience with the design of magic sets.
I did, and your comment is irrelevant in that regard. Back in these days, limited was not a thing, each of these sets were self-contained and you would build your poop deck to play with friends on the kitchen table with variably interpreted rules. Also, 8-cards boosters.
