This set is a modern day Homelands with a marketing gimmick. Clunky overly wordy cards, flavor over function, lots of random junk costed to the point of being unplayable.
Meh. I'm sad there's pack-bait like the Zendikar expedition to boost sales on a rather low powered set.
Not much interesting for me. Kinda surprised there are few commons or uncommons that seem enticing. Maybe the new color-specific activation-lands are interesting for EDH - well, the black, blue and green ones. White and Red are quite poor. White not useless but not that interesting.
(Note this is personal interest).
No.... Champions of Kamigawa was the worst set. This set has some of the worst rares and mythics though. Just like the first Zendikar, i'm more excited for all the commons and uncommons. And lands.
Say that to rares like:
gifts ungiven
through the breach
glimpse of nature
Azusa, lost but seeking
kokusho
Yosei
Meloku, the clouded mirror
sensei's divining top
Kiki jiki
Boseiju, who shelters all
Minamo
Forbidden orchard
Eight and a half tails
Isamaru, hound of konda
And this is just champions look at betrayers and see how many expensive rares are. Smh on people that comment with no base.
it was a bad set until modern became a thing
At least it hit modern for good, tell me about BFZ?
Most likely, This set is mega slow and that would allow weenie red decks take over the format.
There's still Wild Slash and Firery Impulse, but any of the other new burn is all sorcery speed: Exquisite Firecraft and the new Devoid 3 damage for 3CMC. All in all though, red is really weak. I guess they wanted to nerf the RDW, but at the same time, it also hurts red splashes in other decks (was looking forward to playing Grixis or Jeskai, especially with new mana bases).

Wild slash is small and the 3cmc spot for burn spells are crowded. If RDW is playable it will have to rely more on pump spells like Titan's Strength going forward and may have to maindeck Roast.
Back in the day I thought Rise of the Eldrazi was the worst set ever
With maturity, I now think differently. This set shows promise. It's really, really weird and asks us to do new things. That sounds like fun! I for one welcome our new ally overlords.
Yes, Rise of Eldrazi's weakness is what caused me to quit magic. I only came back during Origins, and now this jank set BFZ is the first new set I see
I've been playing modern for a while now, and i have to say, this set doesnt seem bad; as far as eternal applications, there are few and far between, but the set still seems cool. the art for almost all of the new cards are beautiful, plus i think its cool with the expeditions theme/random cards you can pull. sure its a bit of a gimmick with their rarity, but its a cool way of injecting value into a set. plus theres always new, janky deck builds you can do with new cards. example A) knight of the reliquary + retreat to coralhelm = filter every land out of your deck and make knight goddamn huge. seems like a neat play route. dont know how good it is, but seems fun. Anyway, thats my 2 cents on the matter. Hope I didnt offend anyone!
Not a full man-land cycle, LOL. This set just went from barely good because of expedition + new duals + man-lands + full art basics TO average... yet inflated box prices.
This set is so, so bad outside of expeditions and new duals and a couple man-lands...
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
knight of the reliquary combo it's dumb: any spot removal kill that "combo" (pte, bolt in response, decay crap electrolyze too, any counter, any bounce, titan presance and the list could be longer). That's why ascendancy combo it's tier 0 ATM.
Retreat to Reliquary has more in common with Twin than it does with Ascendancy. Ascnednacy is a straight combo deck that does nothing unless you hit the combo. Retreat to Reliquary is a midrange deck that can just kill you on turn 3 with a good draw. Or threaten the combo for the rest of the game.
Titan's presence won't see play in modern. Its bad. Bolt and Electroylyze do nothing to stop the combo. Knight enters the battlefield as a 4/4 almost always thanks to fetchlands. Decay is the only removal card that is particularly good at disrupting the combo, but all you have to do to play around it is keep a fetchland up. The real way to stop the combo is to play grave hate, though it can often generate enough mana to just use kessig wolf run to kill. (assuming your opponent is at less than 15 life.)
I'm not saying the deck will be Tier 1, but the combo is real.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.

This set is just so uninspiring. I was hoping that the commons and uncommons would carry the set for Standard but I guess I was wrong as there are only a few of the 150 last cards revealed that are even playeble.. and only a few more that might be playable. About the most interesting cards to me that they revealed today were Kalastria Healer and Zulaport Cutthroat all the rest are obvious or mediocre or bad... :/ I'm sure standard will look better when decks are played but atm I'm not having too much to hope about. (although I guess I'm just asking to use too much of this set in standard which is probably asking too much in general)
This set is clearly geared towards limited. Nothing wrong with that. As a liimited set, it seems decent.
Not everything can be designed for you. Bu there are constructed crads here and there.
The problem is that everything seems to be about limited nowadays. Even Modern Masters which is supposed to be about making Modern more affordable was mostly about limited and fairly lackluster in the reprint aspect...
I find it truly interesting that they have gone all in on this new block approach and how it will change the game and the first set of this new block set-up isn't filled with the "risky reprints" they discussed nor cards that "can be pushed because they rotate faster" but with unpowered, rares that should be common/uncommon.
It should be said that I am okay with where the mythics are, but man, the rares just feel lazy or in come cases (cancel) just commons with awaken on them.

Chances are that Electrolyze or Kolaghan's Command won't be able to kill Knight of the Reliquary by itself. Usually there is at least 1 land in the GY by the time Knight drops. Bolt isn't a guarantee either.
What makes me believe that this deck is the real deal are:
1. It can be a turn 3 combo. T1, Hiearch. T2, Knight of the Reliquary. T3 Coralhelm Retreat.
2. It is a 2 card combo. Two card combos are the scary ones that you have to pay attention to. See Twin.
3. One of the combo pieces is powerful by itself, and the other is decent as well. Knight is a nice beater, especially when it can tutor up Wolf Run and/or Sejeri Steppe. Coralhelm can tap down blockers, tap down attackers with a fetch land, and give your creatures semi vigilance.
4. In the way that Twin is a combo/tempo deck, this can easily be combo/aggro deck. Because it can function well without the combo, it is worth consideration.
My biggest concern for this deck is the lack of Flash/Haste, but the shell is solid enough to work around that flaw.
honestly, I feel el drazi will rule the format, not only are they prominent, they have some of the best cost effiency of the set. 0/5 for 2 with upsides that can attack versus a 0/6 vanilla wall, 3/2s at 3 instead of 4, 3/3s at 4 instead of 5.
sure and spot removal are real too.
Don't you add titan's presence in tron? lol
Tell that to twin. Seriously, you didn't even read my second paragraph. Its actually very easy to beat spot removal, you just hold up a fetchland. When comboing, if your opponent casts removal, you crack the fetch untapping Knight. You then tap night to fetch Sejiri Steppe and grant protection from removal, while untapping knight. At this point you are probably really clever and point out that you can just target the enchantment. Except, once again, if you keep up a fetch, you just combo on top of their removal. The removal still destroys the enchantment, but not until after it has tapped down all of your opponents blockers and pumped my night to lethal. The best thing to do is exile my graveyard somehow and even then the combo still deals ~13 damage to your opponent and gaurentees good draws for the rest of the game.
Titan's presence is terrible in twin. Twin isn't actully interested in spot removal and only runs ~5 colorless creatures, not nearly enough to make Presence reliably active.

So other people can't voice their opinion of this set? While there are a few good cards in this set (mostly for standard, a couple for EDH),most of the rares in this set are crap, and a few of the commons/uncommons were so close to being good but fell way short. I hate when people just blindly defend the designers ect. that's why we continue to get this garbage. I honestly think the reason Wizards put the treasures in here was to sell packs, otherwise sells would be super low.

Funny, I hate it when people call the cards terrible before they are ever played.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

Because it being a human is a HUGE deal in the decks where it is played.
That doesn't mean it's "strictly better" than Blood Artist though. I don't like when people throw the term "strictly better" in cases where it's not.

Not much interesting for me. Kinda surprised there are few commons or uncommons that seem enticing. Maybe the new color-specific activation-lands are interesting for EDH - well, the black, blue and green ones. White and Red are quite poor. White not useless but not that interesting.

Oh and I like that we finally got Mind stone v. 2 to pair with Mind stone v1 and v3.
I feel like it was cheap to reprint Life Cat and Dragon Groupie
