I disagree that Thunderbreak is automatically better than this, although Thunderbreak is certainly more versatile in that it can go into a variety of deck whereas this is really tailor-made for just one (maybe two if graveyard shenanigans are a thing). In that one very specific deck, all-in aggro full of 1/2 drops with just a few 3-4's as finishers, then I could see this being as good as Thunderbreak, maybe better depending on the environment. It comes down to how reliably you are triggering Thunderbreak vs how long this is likely to stay in play. 3 damage is equal to about a card in those kinds of decks, so if Thunderbreak is regularly triggering then you need to be regularly drawing at least a card (more like 1.5 when you factor in lands) for this to get attractive. OTOH if the type of removal being played means that Thunderbreak isn't triggering reliably (maybe its getting wiped or people are just trading dragons) then the barrier for entry for the new guy drops significantly. In that scenario drawing just one card is good, and if board stalls are at all common and he has a chance to stay in play for multiple turns then he starts to look REALLY good.
Ultimately I like the power level here, strong enough to be worth considering but not so good that it is an auto-include. I do think it seems more rare than mythic as-is, and as a mythic it could have been bumped up just slightly (make it a 5/4, or shrink it a bit and give it haste, whatever)
I think if it sees any play it'd probably only be in lower tier modern Burn, and even then only rarely. It dodges Lightning Bolt so it cuts a not insignificant amount of removal out of the equation and by turn 4 there's not much in Burn's hand as they're usually slinging burn at their opponent's face rather than using it to remove creatures. Maybe a surprise 2 of.
I just got done with another spoiler discussion that wanted a recursion theme, and here you have an easy way to dump cards into the graveyard.
It's a sucky card if you see it as a finisher for aggro or burn, but there's an off chance that it might enable a Johnny deck.
Unfortunately, the cost seems to be too high. At 3 cmc (and maybe a lower p/t) you could use this to set up a turn 4 play of some sort.
Outside chance that it could enable an unusual deck build in standard, but that's probably it.
Forgive me for necroing this thread, but I felt the posting this question here in the rumor mill would be better than starting a thread in standard new card discussion since it involves quite a bit of speculation.
It is hard to tell until all the cards for SOI are spoiled, but what are the chances that Avaricious Dragon will be played as a madness enabler for decks post rotation?
I am not ambitious enough to try this in the new standard, so whenever someone pulls off the Avaricious Dragon dream, please post that story. It seems few and far between but I would like to hear about it.
