Isn't "playable" just a comparison between cards? if there's no Stormbreath Dragon, then less pushed creatures become "playable". I don't understand why some guys need clearly over the top cards to play Standard.
For real. Trying to talk a sets power level based on current meta, that is about to rotate, before the next set is completely spoiled, and has not seen play......... You people need to make better life choices. Bashing this set right now is like posting a critical review of a movie based solely off of only viewing the trailer.
A card's true power depends on what lens you look at it. Wingmate Roc which has Flying and a life gain effect, also gives the player a free Starlit Angel. It's not major to some. However to Selesnya with Populate, it does earn that Mythical Rare status.
I knew I waited too long to be the first to complain about the set. So far, I haven't really seen anything worthy of legacy play other than the reprinted fetches, but there is sooooooooooooooo much more to this set to be released that I expect there will be some chase cards still coming out. This set will sell like hotcakes due to the fetches. I've been playing magic since the beginning and this set isn't all that terrible in my book. I played Homelands. I actually spent money on packs of that. 2 months ago when I was in Italy, I saw a box of it still on a shelf with packs waiting to be sold for 3 euro a piece. I should have offered him 10 euro cents. As long as this set is fun to play people shouldn't be too worried about the power level. In it's environment there will be good cards. Just don't expect them to be high dollar cards after rotation. Even cards that do survive rotation don't always retain their value. Look at Geist of Saint Traft. He was 30 bucks at one point, maybe even more. Now he is what 5 bucks? Poor poor Geist. As long as the set is fun, I won't worry about it's power level. I played Homelands. WHY DID I PLAY HOMELANDS???
I'll take any Geists you're selling for 5 bucks, thanks
Oh wow, not quite as low as I thought he dropped to. Still no, I am not selling him. I'm also still upset I purchased packs of Homelands.

I'm just saying is that if Wizards stops printing those clearly overpowered creatures, then less pushed creatures become playable. While those kind of dudes are in Standard, people will play them over the other stuff, because they are more powerful. It's just a corporative decision by WotC, Stormbreath Dragons are pricey.

I agree to a certain extent. If all cards are bad though the value you get from buying the product is minimal and they don't want to drop the price they sell their printed cardboard for.
At least some cards have to have value that survives the rotation cycle or people will feel robbed.
I'll gladly take a fun set of cards over a powerful any time of the day. Theros may be low-quality (and that is debatable considering all the devotion decks out there) but it's the first block ever that actually made me build a standard deck to go to tournaments with, and that just because it was fun to play with.
Agree with OP, albeit maybe not that extreme. The spoiled stuff already looks much more fun to me than Theros block in general, but I doubt they've solved their power issues. They just keep printing things at 1 or 2 mana too much. And I'm not really asking for a ton of overpowered stuff either, just some cards that appear playable outside of standard, specifically Modern. EDH doesn't count.
And to the guy that said Scars was a horrible block...you do remember that's the block that has New Phyrexia right? Scars block ended up with a ton of playables.
What's this? Another set is being released and less than half of it has yet to be spoiled? Time for yet another "why this set sucks" thread!
There's a bunch of these started with literally every new set. I can understand some of the complaints but after a while it's hard to take this discontent seriously. Not everyone is going to be happy with everything. The next set may excite people who are upset right now or disappoint those who are currently looking forward to Khans. If this set isn't for you, I'm sure there's one that you'll like more coming up.
Yes, the last few sets may not have been the best, but if you look at the power level of this vs Homelands of Fallen Empires which I was stupid enough to buy like candy when I first started. I've had the worst, from what I've seen so far, this is FAR from the worst.... But Haters Gonna Hate, Players Gonna Play and I'm just going to enjoy what I can. Peace.

MTG Junky... First packs being a starter of each 4th Edition and Ice Age. Good Grief, I've been playing since 1995? Where does the time go!

this is mtgs, where occam's razor is so blunt it can't cut jello any more.
Man, the comparison is unfortunate... Homelands is one of the first sets, Magic wasn't the deep game that is now, and WotC didn't have the open fronts that now has (Modern, Limited, Standard...). Homelands was, probably, the first attempt from Wizards to give flavor and a story to the game, power was not important... and they did a good job (at least) not printing mistakes like in Alpha.
I'm not against powerful cards, I'm against dumb cards just printed to sell packs. I prefer Goblin Rabblemaster to Thundermaw Hellkite... both are powerful cards, one is just stupid.

This was hyped to be a wedge set. Granted MaRo never said it was a wedge set. He only alluded to it and is now saying it's wedge themed which is entirely different. So we probably won't see a cycle of battlemages or a cycle of border posts. Many of the alara cycles will be left incomplete. Thats why people are upset because MaRo did state we won't see another wedge block for awhile since khans is wedge themed. So now we have to wait god knows how long before we get our wedge goodies. Seriously Esper gets 12 legends to play with. What does RUG get? 4. Yeah so fair.
I stand by what I said, but I can definitely understand where you're coming from. I was mostly aiming my original post at the people who were upset because there were no equivalents to Wurmcoil Engine or Tarmogoyf in Khans.

For example, would it have been asking too much for Clever Impostor to say target permanent or for Mocking Instigator to have a flip cost of only ? Act of treason is 3cmc and common and Clever Impostor could have been the ultimate copycat if only it could copy lands. If it can copy enchantments, why can't it copy lands?
As much as I love blue (oh dear god I love you Island) I can understand the reason to not make it copy lands. It would give blue mana ramp and land shennigans, which is strictly a green thing. Granted we have blue land stuff matters like High Tide and Turnabout but those were from broken times and it isn't something that Wizards want to revisit. But I agree with you with the red card. As I said in an earlier thread, the reason that this creature is the way it is... is because of limited. Creature Steal is LOATHED and HATED in Limited. Nothing like casting your big mana creature, only for it to be taken from you with haste and smack you across the face for lethal. Act of Treason is slowly going the way of powering down of spells. Much like how Counterspell is too powerful and we have Cancel, Lightning Bolt to Lightning Strike etc.

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.
Yeah its pretty clear that WotC is focusing its design attentions on Standard and Limited by and large. When they said "keeping modern in mind" regarding design it seems they mean to not print much that is relevant or at least obviously relevant in more eternal formats. But I don't think anyone should complain. Fetches have been reprinted so folks who want into Modern/Legacy have a bit of a window to slip through.

Plenty of good standard cards and cube inclusions, but little of eternal relevance aside from fetches, maaaaybe Sultai Charm, and Pod mirror all-star Anafenza.
I love how so many of you can take the reprinting of Onslaught fetchlands and make it into a complaint. "Only fetchlands" is something I'm seeing a lot of recently, and I think all of you saying it like that really need to be a bit more appreciative.
See, the hilarious thing to me is that when Stormbreath Dragon was spoiled, bloody well everybody was complaining that it was a terrible mythic because it wasn't Thundermaw Hellkite.
And now here we are, all over again. I'm already looking forward to the rotation after next, when everyone can start complaining that losing [clan_name] Ascendency, Crater's Claws and [Exciting 1-drop that hasn't been spoiled yet] is going to suck all the power out of standard and leave nothing but big slow midrange decks.

I'd say there's a good chance of getting something playable.
Wingmate Roc is the equivalent of something like Medomai the Ageless, Hythonia the Cruel or Underworld Cerberus. I'm hoping/praying for something more like Stormbreath Dragon or Polukranos, World Eater.

The only real answer asides from burning a Hero's Downfall is Arbor Colossus.

Sarkhan is the set's Stormbreath Dragon.
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
