Whenever Hornet Nest is dealt damage, put that many 1/1 green Insect creature tokens with flying and deathtouch onto the battlefield.
Seems like it's quite along the same flavor lines as Hornet queen. This guy seems like he could be a real play against aggro (ie, r/w or mono-red) or Heroic decks. I also can't wait to cast him after they declare attackers, using Chord of calling or Prophet of Kruphix
Is there any way in standard to do massive amounts of damage to a creature, even your own creature? This guy would be bonkers if he was in the same format as Blasphemous act.
Forgeborn Oreads and Izzet Staticaster and Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius all setup repeatable ping as well, but Chandra may be the best because she's not rotating and requires the least work, even if she does do 1 pt of damage to you.
But maybe you just want to do a ton of damage to your guy in one go? If you can do it at instant speed, you can wipe out their attacking force. Pit Fight (you can even choose your own creature, if it's bigger) and Mercurial Chemister work for this.
Quick modern brew. I think Boros Reckoner + Volcano Hellion is a pretty strong combo, and adding a Hornet token equivalent can only strengthen the consistency of such a game plan.

A few ideas:
* setessan tactics, have your huge monster fight your own nest, instant speed. bonus points if you give your team indestructible and have multiple huge creatures fight him, Timmy mode aktivate.
* Polukronus, he loves beating up on wasp nests
* any arena like affect + big creature
You don't actually need to have a combo to make this card playable. Your opponent can't really attack into this with ground creatures very well. You basically get an amount of 1/1 deathouchers equal to the highest power among your opponents attacking creatures. all it really takes is 3 damage to make this really good since you will 3 for 1 them if they attack afterwards. The only real question I have is if there is a deck that really wants it. And I think there probably will be between caryatid, courser of kruphix, and chord of calling there might be a deck for it.
Ground Assault is one Standard card that can easily do a lot of damage to a creature. Otherwise you also have X cost cards in Standard if you want to play tricks with Nykthos or some of the other mana multipliers around, plus there's Dictate of the Twin Gods to make everything twice as silly. If you're going for the huge damage in one spell approach, you probably also want Purphoros, God of the Forge.
Alternatively, if you just wanted to go infinite you could do a combo along the lines of the one I put in the other thread.

This is pure awesome! And after turn 3, there's no way they're going to attack, so unless you're up against black, they're pretty stuck, even if they are aggro. If they did attack on turn 4 you could still flash in dictate of the twin gods after you declare blockers and you'd get... 4-6 tokens for 16-24 damage on turn 4 and then the tokens do another 8-12 flying damage on turn 5? gg
Hmnn, seems perfect for GB Pestilence decks. Hornet nest seems a bit too low on toughness though.
but 2 pings from a pestilence effect for a gain of 2 1/1 flying and death touch insect tokens is a great deal.
Definitely getting a few for my pestilence deck.
Also seems a great addition to defender decks.
I think this card has some potential, but you need to work at it.
Best color combination in my opinion is R/G. You can brew a "Fight club" of sorts using cards like: Domri Rade, Pit Fight and Setessan Tactics.
Even if you don't build around him he gives extra options to damage spells - if your opponent attacks with multiple creatures, you may want to Lightning Strike your Hornet Nest instead of their guys for instance.
It becomes difficult to predict what your opponent might do with him on the field.

I like the idea of using him with simic. First off you have master biomancer. Gets rid of the problem with his low toughness... and 3/3 flyers are going to rip your opponent to pieces. Next there's Prophet of Kruphix. Because flashing this guy after they attack with their Phytotitan is win.
I kind like this kind of shell. Purphoros + Hornet Queen is deadly as well and help gives this whole shell redundancy. Overall, I'm liking the RG Purphoros Hornet shell, at least for some lol fun.
While I don't think any of the combo ideas are good enough to play competitively, this does seem like an excellent sideboard card for any green deck trying to get to the long game. While the only deck like that at the moment is RG Monsters and Bg devotion, with both Caryatid and Courser staying through rotation there is sure to be a green midrange deck of some sort (especially with the collection of good walkers in green). If there is a deck using a Chord of Calling toolbox this is certainly a mainboard 1-of simply because of how brutal it is to search this up unexpectedly.
I do like the combo with Purphoros, even if a deck that wants both seems unlikely.

Hornet Nest/Broodhatch Nantuko/Saber Ants/Druid's Call
+ Blasting Station/Goblin Bombardment
+ Darksteel Plate/Death's Presence/anything that gives indestructible or +1/+1 when a creature enters or dies
+ /Blood Artist/Deathbringer Thoctar/Falkenrath Noble/Goblin Sharpshooter/Hissing Iguanar/Rage Thrower/etc
Edit: The combo's might be fun, but I think this is a more practical application
4 Fauna Shaman

4 Hornet Nest
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Volcano Hellion

Christmas-land version:
Turn 1 - Elvish Mystic
Turn 2 - Hornet Nest
Turn 3 - Purphoros, God of the Forge
Turn 4 - Dictate of the Twin Gods (flash in end of opponent's turn)
Turn 5 - Heat Ray or Ground Assault on Hornet Nest will deal your opponent 40 damage.
