2G, Tap: Put a verse counter on Yisan
the Wandering Bard: Search your library
for a creature card with converted
mana cost equal to the number of
verse counters on Yisan, put it onto the
battlefield, then shuffle your library.
I am really liking the cards designed by the game designers. My only beef w/ this card is that it is a rogue. I would have liked to see a new creature type, bard (since historically designed in fantasy stores & games, bards differ from rogue classes).
With this particular creature, decks that utilize cards like Birthing Pod can really benefit from the searching. I really like the design of this one, which is also a grat card for casual and EDH fans.
Cool card. Like a less restrictive but slower Liv Sivvi. Could be good enough for std.
So if someone removes Yisan in response to a first time activation, will you get to search for cmc 1 or 0? Don't know if the trigger remembers the # of counters before removal.

Its a little confusingly printed, but the counter appears to be part of the activation cost and will happen immediately..I think?

This is correct. Everything before the colon is part of the activation cost, so a counter would be placed on the card before priority is passed.
Would have been nice if it was just using straight 1/1 counters.
This would allow ramp and also make tricks for opponents being able to put a counter on it to make it draw a different number than activated start.
You know, this guy should really have been named "Nisan" or "Ersan" to match with his 2/3 stats.
("ni" = 2, "san" = 3 in Japanese while "er" = 2, "san" = 3 in Chinese. "yi" = 1 in Chinese. So if you interpret this guy's name in Chinese, he's a 1/3. Damn it...)
As far as playability goes, dies to Bolt. Yeah I know that sounds trite, but he costs 3 and Bolt costs 1. Trading a 3-mana spell for a 1-mana spell is a huge loss of tempo.
It'll be hilarious when they attack into it and you pop out a High Priest of Penance, though. Not sure what 1-drops you'd want to fetch, but yeah, I don't think this is a standard-format card. The realm of EDH and casual decks only, 3 mana each time is just too much to start from.

Very fun card, but probably won't see competitive play.
However, how often do we play bad cards nowadays? Our first activation would probably be something like Noble Hierarch, and the second activation Goyf/Bob/Snappy/mystic.
In casual, Stoneforge mystic can make some very fun plays. Stoneforge into a one-of Illusionist Bracers. Equip the bracers, activate the ability twice, drop powerful 3/4 drops.

It's true about the 2-drop zone being potent. However that's 9 mana over 3 turns to get that value.
The Bracers will copy the ability, not the cost, hence not the counter dropped onto him. You'll search for 2 3-CMCs.
Edit: He'll possibly have some form of value in a Derevi-EDH deck along with Thousand-Year Elixir and other untappers.
I think the main reason why I can't love this guy is because it says "..with a converted mana cost equal to.." and not "..with a converted mana cost less than or equal to.." Aside from the stats, the slowness, etc, I don't like how you essentially need a creature of each cmc to make him worthwhile each time you tap him. Adding a simple three words would have made this guy so much cooler! Additionally, he should have been a 1/4 to make up for the potential death by bolt that everyone keeps talking about.
This card is deceptively bad, it will most likely eat removal before you can even activate it the first time. I think the only thing that would make it playable is if the counters stayed regardless of which zone he moved to.

I hate that it's "equal to" rather than "less than or equal to", but otherwise, the card's fine.
And yeah, between this, Elvish Lyrist, and Joraga Bard, we should have a green (and possibly red?) bard class.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
I want to like him so badly. Very fun and flavourful idea. But what do I do aside from very slowly pull out a couple utility weenies? Especially if he's the general?
Proliferate occurs, but there are a grand total of five proliferate sources available to mono green.
Having lots of 1CC mana accelerators to get him out turn 2, and lots of activated ability abusers, then just getting an engine going really quick, could possibly be good. I'll have to think about this.
I was initially really pumped about this guy, but compared to similar effects he's fragile and expensive and the only real benefit is that he's eligible as a Commander (and Pod and Hibernation's End aren't). If he has a home that's likely it...his effect could have easily cost G or even been free and he wouldn't have been overpowered in any format.

You can play a couple 1-of hydras if he hits the field late and you want him to grab something more consequential than a mana dork (strictly kitchen table here) - Mistcutter is a 1 CMC, the new Genesis Hydra is a 2CMC...

Big Johnny.
Get an elf go.
Get a Caryatid go.
Look I just payed 9 mana for 2 mana dorks and a 2/3.
Seems like a big tempo failure to me.
