As long as your devotion to white and black is less than seven, Atheros isn't a creature.
Whenever another creature you own dies, return it to your hand unless target opponent pays 3 life.
Hmm... For just three, seems to be quite playable in Constructed; might also be a decent EDH general. He is:
-An Indestructible 5/4 Enchantment Creature for 3.
-Forces your opponents to pay life if they want your creatures to stay dead, especially after a board wipe (ex. Damnation)
-Reads "Creatures you own", which means that the effect triggers if something your opponent Bribery'd out of your deck dies.
I like it but do you think that the opponent will care, that the creature he/she just killed will return to the hand of his/her opponent? I mean 3 life is a lot so why not just let them?

Having to recast the creature is indeed a tempo loss but the types of decks that will utilize this card will be playing lower to the ground and aren't usually afforded cheap cards that provide this kind of inevitability. Mid-late game that life loss can be brutal so you either die via effect or to a swarm of creatures. Really, I think this card is just insane.

Okay, think about it this way.... In Constructed, it's not uncommon for a Black Devotion deck to have 10-15 kill spells in the mainboard, as it is their strategy to control the board so threats like Desecration Demon and Pack Rat can win the game.
With Atheros put into consideration, if you were playing a B/W aggro build of some kind with Atheros against a Mono-Black player, and if they didn't pay life for Atheros, then up to a fourth of their deck is almost useless against you. A fourth. And since board wipes in Mono-Black don't really exist (Bile Blight and Drown in Sorrow are very limited in reach), it's very hard for that Mono-Black player to control you unless they pay a lot of life to make your dudes stay dead. Factor in potential life loss from things like Thoughtseize and Underworld Connections, and it becomes a hard thing for Mono-Black to play around easily (Unless they are forced to Thoughtseize your Atheros, God of Passage from your hand.)
When I first read the card, I think .... hmmmm his ability is okay for 5 CMC.... Then I look the mana cost and am so shocked. Totally playable in T2... With Obzedat, I think he could transform super easy.
Now, you could bring back your pack rats OR their Supreme Verdict will make them pay like 9++ lifes. Really look forward for to this god.
Look at this card in Modern Birthing Pod decks. Every time you pod something like a mana dork, you get an extra synergy that is actually really aggressive. This could be an alternative to Orzhov Pontiff.

Well its a nonbo with the Melira Pod Combo, but this fits into other pod variants really well. Maybe a Junk Pod or the likes, sac creature to get bigger creature while still keeping the creature unless opponent looses 3 life is pure value.
#1 - What's the dumbest idea you ever had?
#2 - 15/15 for 15?
#1 - Make it dumber
#2 - Give it protection from removal and counter?
#1 - DUMBER!
#2 - Add Timewalk?
#1 - DAMN IT MAN, I SAID DUMB!! DUMB !!!
#2 - It destroys everything when it attacks.... And wait, I have a friend who plays mill decks... I want to beat him too.
#1 - Excellent! Recess is over, go back and learn sex-ed with the other 6th graders.

Bringing back pack rats isn't that great. The tokens made by it can't go back to your hand, so unless you actually PLAY 3 pack rats, you won't be forcing 3-9 life. Just the normal 3.

Wow. Just wow. As if BW midrange did not need more help. Actually, it did! Have fun getting rid of Blood Barons. Also, replaying Gary's is just funny.
This card isnt very good in BW Midrange since they could care less that you paid 3 mana to bolt them. In terms of efficiency, its actually terrible since 3 mana isn't worth a lightning bolt. BW Midrange doesn't play enough creatures for the damage to really stack up.
This is a good control hoser for BW Aggro however. Maybe some of the black aggro decks will splash for this. Its only really good in any Bx Aggro deck since getting board wiped comes at a huge price since the creatures either don't die or they take a ton of damage to do so.
I really don't see this being modern playable either. It sounds like win more for Affinity and its not really a card that Birthing Pod wants since thats more of a midrange grindy deck.

You can sac Atheros prior to comboing off. He's insane value for that deck when you're not comboing off (and the deck often wins without the combo), and the combo requires a sac outlet in play anyway.
Ornithopter, Memnite, and Atog seems fun? I like this god; it has a playable CMC, and recursion like that is solid. Three life is also nothing to scoff at.

Yeah, I think that's pretty good actually. If you don't have the combo and have this out, you are gaining a lot of value from having your dying creatures return back to your hand. This also makes the deck much more potent and dangerous since now they have a CA engine built into a deck which can also be searched by Pod.

In an aggro control build of Blood Barons, Brimaz, Desecration Demon, Sin Collector, and ETC sounds really strong with the god. Godsend just adds to the party.

Thats not aggro, thats midrange. Those cards your mentioning are mostly finishers. You don't really need a 3 mana lightning bolt with your 1-2 creatures that will be ending the game on their own anyway.

And Godsend isnt remotely playable.
I see a lot of Supreme Verdicts and control decks, thus BW midrange (correction made there) seems very viable as a counter control deck. Godsend as a 1 or 2 of helps the god go creature and helps in the mirror. It's an idea.
Turn 1, Gnarled Scarhide or another 1 drop.
Turn 2, Spiteful Returned.
Turn 3, Atheros. Atack with Spiteful. If unblocked, 3 damage. If sent to graveyard, 5 damage. If sent back to hand 2 damage.
Turn 4, Bestow scarhide. If unblocked 5 damage. If scarhide is sent to graveyard 5 damage. If scarhide is sent back to hand, 2 damage, spiteful is on the board ready to repeat the cycle.

Godsend is pretty useless verse control. A random +3/3 enchantment does absolutely nothing. Its also terrible in the mirror since creatures arent battling when they are getting Devoured and Downfalled all the time.
BW Midrange already crushes control with its Thoughtseize/Duress/Sin Collector/Obzedat packages. It doesn't need a bunch of cards that literally do next to nothing against other decks.
Atheros is going into sideboards and maybe a 1 of in the main of most BW Aggro lists. Its a nightmare for control, but not really against other decks can just battle through all the bad BW creatures and don't care that you keep getting them back. People will just run Last Breath and keep using Lifebane Zombie in Bx Midrange decks so I don't see it being that powerful against anything other than UWx control.
Holy crap, this thing is insane. WW is a real deck again. And I don't think it really serves the same purpose as Pontiff, but it's certainly viable in Melira Pod.
Is it just me who finds it curious that the ability specifies a "target opponent" to make the life-tapping? Often when you see these kinds of abilities it is offered to all players/opponents.
Could he really be that busted or is the plausibility of this version getting lessened?
Actually both can use it. Its incremental advantage that gets better as the game progresses, at that point opponents will have lesser life and fewer cards in hand also at this point spot removal becomes next to useless with this in play. This also gives the deck a midrange to late game reach while not loosing tempo due to spot removals.
Arguably, my problem with Wb weenie/aggro is the lack of true CA, this bars cards like Underworld Connections (you don't want to play an enchantment that does nothing in a creature based deck)and other sorcery draw cards while Athreos on the other hand is a creature at the same time provides true CA in the form of returning dying creatures to hand or dealing 3 damage to an opponent for each creature killed. Getting 7 devotion will not be too hard since you are a creature based deck thus you also get a free 5/4 creature for only 3 mana.

About Mindslaver rulings:
When I saw "a creature you own" I couldn't stop thinking Bronze Bombshell, Sleeper Agent, Jinxed Idol and other jank like Endless Whispers.
It could also be fun with Sneak Attack but most people would just pay the 3 life and be done with it.
Multiplayer Decks- Memnarch - Animar, Soul of Elements - Zur, the Enchanter - Atraxa, Praetors' Voice - Food Chain Tazri - Teysa Karlov
Modern BUMill and Bant Spirits.
