Man, it's really good to be a casual player. I know that MTGS posters tend to be pretty cynical, but it just baffles me how upset the "competitives" get literally every time a new set comes out. It's just a card game, guys.
I feel you on this. I absolutely love spoiler time and always come here for it. I enjoy what people have to say about some of the cards. But this is just a silly thread. What do people want? I just glad to have gotten a few things I really wanted/hoped for. Whelming Wave, Kiora, the Crashing Wave, Kiora's Follower. Then there are the cards that I was not anticipating that I love. Mogis! I mean come on, he is crazy. I am just going on here so I apologize for that. Stop complaining. Or complain if you'd like, your choice.
Standard completely shifted with the release of Theros, and it looks like Born of the Gods will be making a relatively large impact even though it's a small set.
Of course standard completely shifted with the release of theros. An entire block left the format.
All I see is that there's nothing here to deter people from playing X devotion, so we'll have at least another 3+ months of some of the most boring standard matches ever.
I'm not going to call it the worst set, in all actuality it will probably be in the mid to weakish range, but not in the bottom five. Prophecy, Homelands, Fallen Empires, Dragon' Maze, Betrayers of Kamigawa (minus Jitte), Guildpact, Dissension, Dark Ascension... I used to put scars block on there as well, but a lot of the cards have been taking off, and not even EDH can save a set like Prophecy like the format did with Kamigawa.
No, my problem is that the game is too formulaic now. It always has been, but it feels like a lot of it is just lazy designing now, with too few clever designs. If you just look at Stormbreath Dragon, it was obvious to everyone that it was going to see some play, and the grey merchant just might be stupid. The only thing I'm really seeing right now is some mono W enablers, the obligatory hate cards, and a bunch of mediocre/fringe playable gods.
-edit- I thought the whole point of spoiler season was to get us excited for the new set?
Until they reprint Vizzerdrix and Trained Orgg at mythic rarity, I shall refrain from judging a set as 'worst ever'.
But seriously, some of the earliest cards weren't just 'bad' as in having high CC or slightly outside of the power curve, but actually outright detrimental if you played them. Imagine the uproar if they reprinted Wood Elemental or Sorrow's Path in a set.
I think perhaps the biggest issue I have with Theros block so far is it feels mechanically very pushed toward creatures. I was kind of hoping they'd explore enchantments a bit more (like maybe create enchantments that provide an effect, but can also temporarily be turned into creatures in exchange for that effect), but I feel like they've just stuck auras/enchantments on creatures and called it good.
Ive been playing Orzhov since i starting gaming in July 2013
Theros so far has been a lot of fun. Anyone thinking the power creep would continue to rise after Ravnica has a lot to learn about the game. Power waxes and wanes, it has to or you wouldn't get to play with older cards. What matters is how much fun a set is.
I'm currently having a blast, standard is plenty diverse. Draft is fun although this time of the season its a bit repetitive. New cards look good to me nothing earth shattering but enough to shake things up, what more do you really need?
Those are all staples. There are a lot of modern cards that are playable but don't make top 8 decklists because A) their archetype doesn't match up favorably with the current meta B) they get squeezed out of the 75 by cards that fit the deck better. This doesn't mean the cards themselves are any less playable. Think about Knight of the Reliquary. It used to be in at least a couple top 8 decks at every tournament, but now you might see one a month. It's still a damn good card, but it doesn't quite fit the meta anymore, mostly thanks to Nacatl being banned and DRS being printed
Sure there's TONS of cards that are playable in all sets
But if you want to win u play the best cards
I think these are the worst sets for limited in years. I even like Avacyn more and I stopped drafting for a while when that garbage was fnm. For standard I think they are fine. We shall see about eternal formats.
When making statements like "worst in history of MTG" then it certainly makes it much less relevant if the person making the statement has 1 year of experience in a 20 plus year game. Generally speaking, it is hard to take any hyperbolic statements like that seriously especially when the set hasn't been fully spoiled or released yet.
People have been spoiled by the Meta before rotation which was one of the best we have seen in a while. If you haven't been playing for several years you would probably look at this as an awful set. Its not the best but its not the worst.
They should create a sticky thread with all the links to each "This is the worst set ever" in it.
I think Theros and Born of the Gods is fine, no way is either the worst set ever created.
This is honestly the best idea I've ever heard come out of the Rumor Mill.
On point, there are some cards that are absolutely insane in terms of power. Brimaz, King of Oreskos seems like one to me. There are some solid commons and uncommons as well (personally my favorite type of cards to see in spoilers).
I played in Mercadian Masques, Nemesis, and Prophecy. Hell, when I started playing Homelands wasn't so old that you didn't see boosters of it lying around under the glass at your LGS. Theros is so much better than those sets it's not funny.

To be fair, Masques did have Brainstorm and Daze, which are two of the most powerful commons ever printed.

True but I think the point of alot of people responses is people going off with uninformed opinions about how terrible this set is. When they have probably not played threw more then a few sets.
If Wizards want people to buy cards they have to print good cards that have appeal after they rotate from standard.
They want standard to be full of crap cards so they don't end up having to ban anything.
The problem is devotion.
Overpowered card = add more colored mana symbols.
Wizards doesn't want to print powerful devotion enablers though.
This is why in my opinion devotion itself has caused cards to be crap. You can see they are willing to print instants with lots of colored mana required but no way in hell do they want permanents that puts 3 devotion of the table.
They want Boros Reckoner and Nightveil Specter to rotate so they can be done with that scourge rather than printing new enablers and having the same problem right up until devotion itself rotates.
Anger of the gods is a good SB card
Master of waves is in merfolk
Swan song is a SB card
The rest of what the other stuff isn't in competitive modern.
Maybe you will see them in brews at your lgs but not in competitive real modern
Dude formats adapt i remenber when people thinked Leonin Arbiter and Aven Mindcensor where casual cards i remenber when Mangara of Corondor was trash when valakut.scapeshift.deck was one of the best decks you could play in modern. last year (2012-2013) a almost garbage card maked one of the most popular decks Second Sunrise ( second breakfast). Cards shoud be rated by playability not if it is played in a tier 1 deck ( and you know alot of the so called tier 2 decks can easily win from a tier 1 deck . you know why? Tier 1 are mostly played than a tier 2 deck and soo they apear more in top 8...
EDIT:
Also i remenber Invasion block and it s standard , you know what ? i think it was alot less powerfull than THS standard and RTR standard

PS that Whelming Wave though

That'll learn those dern Wizards.

Most of the cards I listed have unique effects. This means the format could change in such a way that they suddenly become the best cards available
Standard:
GU Prophet

WBU Shared Fate
Trades
I buy HP and Damaged cards!
Only EDH:
Sigarda, Host of Herons: Enchantress' Enchantments

Purphoros, God of the Forge: Global Punishment
Xenagos, God of Revels: Ramp, Sneak, & Heavy Hitters
Ghave, Guru of Spores: Dies_to_Doom_Blade's stax list
Edric, Spymaster of Trest: Donald's list
BEEEES!

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
