Here's the thing I hate about this set, they say its focused around enchantments but really it isn't it just pretends that creatures are enchantments. They haven't printed any real playable enchantments. The best enchantment in standard right now is from RTR.

Yup. They want limited and standard to be creature fests. Which doesn't work so well in eternal formats with excellent removal options
Wow. Just looked over the BNG spoiler. For the first time in the nearly two decades I've played magic, there are exactly 0 cards I am excited about in the entire freaking set. Wizard's attempt to make a top-down block and limited format has resulted in clunky, uninteresting, and unplayable cards SO crappy that they make Kamigawa seem like a high-powered set. Oh well =/

The fact that people are even comparing BNG to Homelands, Saviors, and the Dark, should show us how bland and unexciting this set MAY be.
Now, I'll acknowledge that we just got the last 50-60 cards, but after going through and looking at them all together, I'm underwhelmed.
For me, this isn't necessarily due to power level, but from a bland feel that takes over the set. The enchantment creature type seems tacked on and untapped as far a design potential. Same goes with the Gods and, well, the enchantments in general. Bestow just doesn't cut it. Nothing interesting has been done with it thus far. Tribute is...I'm not sure why that's a highlighted mechanic. Seems odd. Finally, Monstrous was inexplicably cut, and Devotion, while having a couple decent cards, doesn't seem supported beyond the already used hybrid cards from last year.
I guess I'm just sitting here wondering what exactly happened with a set that seemed like it could be awesome.
Man this set has great art. Have I said what great art they have? Some real works of art. Art art art. I'd like to remind everyone what great art there is, because thats about the only good thing I can say about this turdbomb

Agreed wholeheartedly. I find myself cringing at the incredibly talented individuals behind the art of this set, and how many of those cards are just horribad.
That said, I think limited gameplay will be fantastic. Standard got a few strong nudges like Courser and Brimaz and a few choice removal options, as well as new beaters, and maybe some antics with the new gods. Modern/Legacy got Spirit of the Labyrinth.
I actually like Inspiration a bit, even if it's not super techy. Tribute is horrifically bad for competitive play.
All in all, I'd say BotG is like a 6/10, albeit maybe a little higher if you're a limited player at heart. A small bevvy of treasures amid a sea of bulk rares.

Wow. How did I forget to mention the awesome art in the block thus far? It is indeed a shame that much of it will be seen little after it stops getting drafted.
And inspire seems potentially neat, but without further experience, I can't really say. Hopefully its a deceptive mechanic.
i've been playing since 2008 and i'm excited to say that this is the first set i'm not excited to buy packs for.
Agreed. I deliberately will not attend BNG prerelease either.
It is bad idea to buy 6USD booster packs to open 0.60USD worth of cards in each then you need a playset of Brimaz, for example. Much better idea to simply spend 100 USD on playset of given Mythic Rare card at secondary market.

Spirit of the Labyrinth won't see Modern play. The strongest card-drawing spell in Modern is Sphinx's Revelation. If this won't affect Standard it won't affect Modern. Here is what I think might see play.
Kiora's Follower: 1 of in Kiki Pod
Searing Blood: 2 of in Monored Burn
Drown in Sorrow: Replaces Infest
Brimaz, King of Oreksos: 2 of in Death and Taxes, Soul Sisters, and WB Tokens
And this is what I think is the best possible outcome. These will probably see less play than I predict. What's even worse is that there are no build-around rares and no strong cards for Devotion decks. I think that this is the most underpowered set since Saviors of Kamigawa.

Did you now read what Sanguimancy does? That card looks plenty playable. I can remember paying half my life total to draw 4 cards with an Infernal Contract, so I am going to imagine this card will play much better.
Given how wrong the collective mass of MTGS posters usually are when it comes to card evaluations, this set looks like it's on route to be quite awesome. Many of the cards have potential.
After all, who played Nightveil Spectre after Gatecrash was released? What's good now can be trash in a year's time, and vice versa.
Holy crap is this a skill-intensive Limited set. Inspire and Tribute require 1-2+ turn decision trees while also promoting preparation and complex game state observation.
Bunch of sneaky good Modern cards too though most are enchantments so thus I suppose helps hexproof the most.
We are in great shape post rotation. Devotion (both Major and Minor) with very efficient beatdown creatures (like Brimaz and the 1GR 4/4 Tribute trampler) along with an insane amount of aura cards/support from only 2 sets will go great with anything.
Someone seriously needs to start a "is this the most skill intensive limited set ever" thread. Wouldn't mind seeing the opposite of this thread too as it super exciting for Standard... way better than Scars and Innistrad blocks.
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
Searing Blood is really it for me (want a foil playset, just in case for burn [across all format] other than that, nothing right now screams "buy me for eternal"
but I did pre-order a common/uncommon playset off ebay for $31 like I do everyset, so at least that covers 2/3rds of the card pool for whatever

I ment for Modern. That card looks strong and I will test it, but I think that I'd be better off sticking with Phyrexian Arena.

It doesn't take a genius to notice that most of these rare are bulk limited. All weak effects printed on overcosted creatures. No evasion either to dodge removal. Punisher mechanic makes sure you get the worst choice. Heroic cards still dont offer enough value or evasion for constructed. Bestow is cheaper but still isn't impactful enough. The only cards that will change are 2-3 mythics and a handful of uncommon removal.
Have you checked the removal suite in standard and after this set? or the discard suite right now? ephara or xenagos could be powerful with indestructable but they even printed excellent uncommon removal against them.
Funny how, when they both came out, people hated them.
Kind of like how I hate BOTG right now.

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
LOL

I am, for example, along with Duskmantle Seer who doesn't see any play today.

Which is pretty much how I like small sets to be. 8/10, super excited to play this in sealed, slightly less in bng-ths-ths draft (so bored of ths).

It's funny, but I read the same comments on Pack Rat, Desecration Demon, and Nightveil Spectre last year during their respective spoiler seasons.
And look how that turned out.
