I knew this was coming for U. I was only hoping it was going to be scry 2 instead of scry 1. I'll probably be running this as a two or three of. I like syncopate still, but this is just nice to have in a mid-range format.

I thought uncommons didn't have reminder text. This mean this is in the intro pack?
Well it is good and likely the best we will get. Hmm going to be interesing to work out the counterspell balance. If the format is slow then this could see more play than syncopate
Ya, I agree. That's almost like a 3 mana Dismiss (and potentially better than that in the late game). Cancel with an upside has been Standard playable a few times (Stoic Rebuttal, Dissipate) and if anything this card's upside is not really situational like Dissipate's, or hard to accomplish like Stoic Rebuttal's.
In a vacuum this almost seems better than Dissipate or Hinder, since Scry 1 is almost always useful while exiling or "tucking" the card is format and match-up dependent. I like this counter a lot :).

Have we finally reached the point where Cancel + upside is evaluated for the Standard format that actually exists instead of being compared to Counterspell and dismissed?!
I agree with the apparent consensus - this should be an effective role player of a card.
In a format wherein there is potential for players to run creatures that can't countered by Essence Scatter because they can be cast as Auras (only one or two playable so far, but we will see more as the block fleshes out, not to mention there might be more in Theros right now), and wherein a lot of decks will be running high creatures counts as to make Negate weak in the main, I would be surprised if more serious control decks didn't run a few copies of this.
This is not the Counterspell blue deserves but this is the Counterspell blue gets.
It's still 3 mana, but scry 1 is something. I don't think we'll ever get Mana Leak again or any other usable 2 mana counterspell so there you have it, at 3 mana.
It hurts me to think of it as a "good" counterspell. Once we had Mana Leak, Force Spike Condescend, Criptic Command, actual Counterspell. Too good, they decided.
I'll probably run it.
So bad for a counterspell. Great for standard, because you know, counterspells suck, creatures rock
Remand is the counterspell blue deserves, but not the one it needs right now ;).

All these crap dual lands too! Whatever happened to real duals like Tropical Island?!? Too good, I guess.

We do kind of need better counterspells. The dual lands are fine, for the most part. But we need a Mana Leak reprint. Or Remand. Or Force Spike. Or Cryptic Command. Or something better than this.

Being a tad dramatic, aren't you? They printed Mana Leak in multiple consecutive sets recently. The fact that they've scaled back countermagic a bit for the last couple sets doesn't mean they're never reprinting Mana Leak, it just means Mana Leak is what they consider pushed for counter power levels, so you'll get comparable counters only when they want to push that.
Control players rejoice. We have our Dissipate replacement. So it will come down to this spell and Render Silent. I'm pretty sure Cancel will never see standard play again. I'm definitely pleased with this card.

I really like this. I hoped they would print this, and I'm glad they did. This has a lot of hidden value. At the points where it is good, it is really good, because it makes sure you can stay in control of the game. The worst thing about counterspells is if you counter something, and then they play something the following turn that is almost as bad, but you don't have an answer for it. This helps you preemptively dig for another answer, or another counterspell, or an actual play. This is great for standard. This reminds me of Vapor Snag in that it is a commonly reprinted ability with a small reasonable without making the card more expensive. I could see this being the Vapor Snag of the next standard season, though not as much in the oppressive "bounce/counter everything you play, kill you" type of way.
Not bad, better than Dissapate in upcoming standard(well, there's Tymaret). A needed card for control, but no better than expected. Scry 2 would have been a legitimately good card(best since leak). Will see play for sure. Between this and scrylands, control is getting some nice passive scry effects(scry 1 pasted onto something you're playing anyways). Maybe it will do better tho year without Hellrider/consistent 3-color aggro/undying attackers.
However you put it, it's bad and it's not going to get better. This is the limit counterspells are "pushed". WotC said that Mana Leak was too good and they wouldn't do it under today's standard.
Which won't be tomorrow's standard. These things change a ton. Remember that one of the things they've been dealing with for a couple years was keeping Standard balanced in the presence of Snapcaster Mage - that's not the kind of card they print if they hate draw-go.

The Innistrad incarnation saw a lot of play, and that was situational. This is not. You can always use Scry, regardless of colors. I'd go so far as to say this is better than Dissipate due to it not being situational. Subsequently, it'll see more play than the last incarnation.
Probably a 3 of in a control deck. Hard counters spells AND lets you Scry 1? Really nice for drawing into more gas.

To be honest, having conditional counter at 2cmc and hard counter at 3cmc is very healthy for the game.
This past season showed that counter isn't dead. Syncopate, Dissipate, Essence Scatter and Negate are all fine card. They just require you to be more conscious and make better decisions. I still remember the days where you almost paid no attention about how to adjust your counter suite to the meta and rarely bat an eye on which counter you would use for a given threat. I like where we're going compare to that.

You need better counters in formats that are faster

Imagine that, development actually wants players to have to make decisions in regards to their deck construction, the shape of the format, and the threats they need to deal with. It's as if they don't print cards that are universally too good and format defining because it deducts from the cognitive aspects of the game by streamlining card choices and play options.
How dare they try to make Magic better by putting more onus on players to be more creative and intuitive with the tools given to them. I won't stand for it. /sarcasm

Nope, UB is much stronger than UW thanks to CIPT lands (frequent turn 5 Verdicts), Sphinx Revelation hate and substitutes like Opportunity. Nightveil Specter is criminally under-rated for those with no Block experience. Also freaking amazing with Thassa.
SO. In reality it comes down to this or Psychic Strike. And, I'm still undecided, lol, off to test more... I WAS really enjoying Psychic Strike as a ~2of - it's soooo easy on the mana.
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
