I'm partial to red cards, so I'm leaning towards rift bolt, molten disaster, or sudden shock. If I was worried about all the red in the pack and trying to avoid getting cut, I'd probably take marsh filter. Evasion, combat tricks, and it opens you up to goblins and faeries? On second thought, I'm just first picking marsh filter.
LP, I'm checking your article out as well. Behind all of your swag is the brain of one of the most intelligent Magic players I've ever known. I guess that's one more thing for you to add to the wall of ego that is your Sally sig.
I can go with that. LK, you are the Mace Windu of red mages...cool, tempered logic in deliberation, but capable of just flat kicking tail when the situation warrants it.
any of these
but as Spellstutter Sprite will lock me in faeries
and Rathi Trapper isn't strong enough for a 1st pick (for me)
the choices are Sudden Shock, Molten Disaster, Rift Bolt
as any of these can put the others two drafters in R
i will pick Sudden Shock cause it seems like a always good removal (cheap will always hit)
Molten Disaster can deal with agro but is more like a sideboard card
Rift Bolt deals more damage but is also 1 more mana and when suspended can sometimes loss a good target
I voted disaster because it's a wrath. BUT probably the "pro" pick would be to Marsh Flitter or spellstutter sprite and leave red to the 3 players after you (who all can't believe how there's still this bomby red removal spell...).
I'm leaning towards the spellstutter Sprite. genuine quality potential (i guess in a vacuum, it's a force spike on a 1/1 flier for 1u, which isn't so bad) and the gentle-person beside you would be tempted away from blue, which i guess makes you less likely to be cut from it come pack 2.
It's not a Force Spike, it's a Mental Misstep unless you draft a heavy fae deck. Marsh Flitter is a better choice since it can work in both a faerie or goblin deck depending on what comes your way in the next couple picks.
My pick is the Rift Bolt. Yeah, you pass a bunch of red. But Bolt is easily splashed, it goes in any deck, and it's just great value. Sudden Shock is pretty much equal, but Bolt is foil here
The pick is Dreamspoiler Witches for me, because it's both evasive and turns your instants/ flash guys into removal spells. However as the only person voting for it as of yet, I assume I'm in the wrong here.

I like the rift bolt here as it works in storm, is quality removal, and a notch above the other red cards. SSS isn't good enough to first pick and is a very fair mental misstep. Dreamspoiler witches is not good enough to first pick as a conditional removal spell that requires lots of instants to function at least semi decently.
I don't like molten disaster at all. It's an awkward red sweeper that is SB material unless you're short playables. Sudden shock is good, but it's not good enough to take over rift bolt for me as 2 damage versus 3 damage is a huge difference. If I wanted to stay as open as possible, blue spellbomb.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
I picked Rift Bolt, but after some pondering I think Witches is the correct pick. A 2/2 flier is a decent threat, and it makes combat a nightmare for your opponent.
Take Rift Bolt, wheel the Lava Spike. In pack 2, you might have to decide on the second color, since the people to your left might be in your color. There should be enough aggressive cards in green or white to take a few there, and then you can get back to the red plan in pack 3.
There's a lot of subtle picks here, but for pure power I think Rift Bolt wins out. Splashable burn/removal that is great early or late and fantastic in any and all R/x archetypes.

Picking Marsh Flitter is setting up a more consistent deck I think. It doesn't even really force you into tribal because it's so efficient on it's own. Let the others fight for red/removal which is quite plentiful.
Am I the only person real partial to Rathi Trapper in this pack?
Here's a solid tapper (read: soft removal) that can be searched out of your library (so you don't even need to draw it for it to be good, if the right other cards flow).
Molten Disaster would be the best card in a vaccuum in a normal set, but there's too much red in this pack to take any of it.
Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but Giant Dustwasp was a beatstick in TPF. The best card in a vacuum is Rift Bolt, and that's what I take here, but Dustwasp is probably the next best card in the pack. Witches doesn't trigger nearly as often as you think, Spellstutter Sprite is actively bad in Limited, and Marsh Flitter in practice underwhelms. I like Molten Disaster to an extent, but it's not as good as the top two and requires a heavy red commitment to be at its best. After that, Trapper and Recluse (anyone else remember what a pain it was to deal with multiple Recluses?).
Marsh Flitter is the best card that isn't red. All of the red cards are great, though, and Rift Bolt and Sudden Shock can both be splashed.
Trapper and Dust Wasp are both acceptable, though neither is on the level of the red and Marsh Flitter.
It cuts green better than Flitter cuts black because its entirely likely your neighbor takes the Trapper if hes already into black.
That, and Dustwasp is probably on par or better than the Flitter already.
