I rather like the set. I think there's a good mix of complex and simple designs, a lot of cards that reach out to a lot of different types of players, and the majority of mythics don't scream 'Are you playing my colors? Use me or lose.' Overall, I think this set will prove it's worth many times over to the current nay-sayers, but to each their own.

This thread again. Can we wait for the set to actually be released next time? It's got its goods and bads, but from what I see it's quite good. I'll say I don't think the mechanics all got a fair shake, but considering there were 10 of them I think I can live with that. Full block drafts are going to be sweet and I think it'll be a nice change of pace from the recent limited environments.
However, in today's culture of Justin Bieber, Jersey Shore, and Twilight, where every song on the radio, every program on television and every site on the internet is just another monument to the pinnacle of human stupidity, it's certainly not the worst thing that people could be watching.
While DGM is hardly the end of control, it's obvious it very heavily supported other archetypes. With the exception of Lavinia of the Tenth, so many of the cards control gained, from Aetherling to Council of the Absolute to Notion Thief and even Plasm Capture, are only meant for mirror matches while aggro gained hatebears and valuebears left and right.
Control will live on; this is hardly a death knell. But it is frustrating.

When control is hands down the best deck in standard standard becomes a fairly boring field to play in.
I also prefer slower controlling decks but I realize that back in say TSP Standard. Teachings decks got wayyy out of hand and mirror matches were extremely common. Control is still quite good and will continue to show up despite this set. Crap GTC gave far more tools against control then this set did, Burning-Tree Emissary is one of the most pushed 2 drops ever.

As someone who is never playing standard again due to the designers making creatures the only relevant card type, I disagree very heavily with control making standard boring.
I like the set outside of the guild champs. Great for limited, and has plenty of ammo for my EDH decks at pretty much every rarity.
Also I think Dimir got one of the best competitive constructed cards in the set in Far // Away. Yeah, your mythic/rares are kinda underwhelming...but you get one of the best cards in the set at uncommon. Meaning you get your toys on the cheap.
the set is based off of hating on blue/black and all control plus the set is filled with horse crap commons/rares/mythics/uncommons.
Ok thank god, I'm glad you told us that, now we can only hope you quit for good this time. I once had a big fast food burger chain( we'll call them mc_blanck; no that's too obvious; blank_donalds) tell me that they couldn't guarantee the quality of their food; so I quit eating there. Basically I see what you're doing here, they told you that they could no longer guarantee that the game would make everyone happy, so you're out to spread the word. Good for you. Unless they didn't actually say that and you're just tring to push your own self-absorbed view onto others. In which case, shame.

I think the difference between Burning-Tree Emissary and, say, Legion's Initiative or Voice of Resurgence is that the Emissary is "Good for Aggro" while the other two are "Good Against Control." These are very different feelings. Emissary makes aggro players feel good. It doesn't make control players feel bad. Voice just makes control players feel bad.

The Top 8 for Protour Gatecrash had decks varying from as little to 9 to as many as 30 creatures. The average was about 14. Making up a little more than 20% of a deck certainly doesn't mean they are the only relevant card type.
Nevermind the year of Delver we just had, a deck that focused largely on instants and sorceries. Or miracle decks that occasionally pop up.
As a control player, I see it more as a challange than anything else. Sure it is going to be a pain to deal with some of these cards, but they won't keep me from playing what I want to play. Change some options around. Do something more aggressive than milling people out. If you're prepared for them, they won't be as prepared for you because they think that the card will do all the work for them. Besides, for all we know, Theros will give control some amazing treats. Let them have a couple of months to turn guys sideways!!
This will be the first set since Dark Ascension I won't be buying sealed product for however (I was traveling when DA released): while there's a lot of stuff that looks like it will be a lot of fun there's also way too much stuff I just don't want due to them being in colour combinations I don't really do
I can't wait to draft though, it's going to be awesome

I think that could have been alleviated if they had just made this a full set.
I feel like no guild got the proper amount of love. Another 100 cards could have helped that immensely.
Another 3 commons, 2 uncommons, rare, and a mythic for each guild sounds pretty nice. I don't feel like Dimir got anything 'interesting' done with Cipher. Look at some of the champions. You'll notice they are REALLY synergetic and AWESOME with their guild mechanic. And they'll see Dimir's champion. You'll look at Teysa. And then you'll look at Melek. While Teysa and Melek (i think) are sweet designs, why not make other cards that interact in interesting ways with your mechanic?
Why not make Uncommon/Common or non-Legendary rares that twist the mechanic a bit? I think some of the guilds fell short on getting something like this.
The best thing Cipher got was Nivix Cyclops, for example. =|
Individuals are allowed to dislike something. It's not going to change anyone's minds either way.People like different things and different sets and it's been that way since the beginning of the game.
I personally don't like DGM but I love RtR and I love the block as a whole.
I hate all of Scars, I love to death Lorwyn/Shadowmoor.
The OP gives his opinion and states why and it's valid for him, but complaining about it online isn't going to prevent design you don't like. You refusing to buy product will. So keep your money in your pocket and stop posting your feelings.
sorry i just was angry that the set wasn't a lot large than it is because i feel that the guilds got no love but the spider thing is meh i don't care about it i just like a huge mix of decks

I said when control is HANDS DOWN THE BEST DECK!!
Crap I would think aggro being hands down the best deck would make standard boring. I just think that right now control players can't handle when their deck doesn't have favorable match ups across the entire field. If control is every fairly favorable in most match ups across the entirety of standard, the field becomes boring as hell. Obviously its a rare state when any deck is "the best" without a doubt in standard the last time was probably caw-blade.
I have no problem with control being a decent deck in the format, which I think it is right now Esper Control just top 8ed Pro Tour Gatecrash.

That is the thing. Esper Can Top 8 pretty consistently, but it never actually WINS anything. Control as a whole haven't actually WON PTs and GPs for a good while. And your attitude toward control players is rather unbecoming, fyi. It is not that we don't like if we don't have a favorable matchup across the board. The problem arises our worst match ups ARE THE ONES WIZARDS ARE PUSHING. For instance, hyper aggro. Hyper aggro is the bane of control. Normally we would be fine with it, jut play more removal. But Wizards is one step ahead of us and what did they print? Medic of Alpha Strikes, Boros Charm, The stupid exile your things temporarily+anthem, Golgari Charm, and Simic charm to give control a big screw you to yoru answers. Now Naya aggro and possibly some Hyper aggro decks have another answer to control, Voice of Resurgence. Heck, Wizards even have control hate to itself with cards like Notion Thief and the new Look at me, I am DCI card. I mean really? It is straight hate against control. Last block brought utility to aggro, while annoying and made them powerful, directly hate on control. It just made Aggro more powerful. Now in DGM Wizards has printed a veritable wall of hate against control. They didn't print utilitybears they printed straight HateBears. That is the problem.

Are you aware that the difference between winning an event and top 8ing an event is usually just lucky breaks?
I mean at that level the field is very tough and a bad string of luck can lead to doom. I mean just because it hasn't "won" it doesn't mean the deck is inferior to the field.
Crap if it was truly inferior it would have never top 8ed in the first damn place. Again I FREAKING PLAY CONTROL VARIANTS OFTEN!!!! I swear control players are the most touchy of all they act like anyone that has anything negative to say about control are hardcore aggro/combo players and long for the day they never have to face it again.
Magic is a card game therefore luck has to be on your side all day to win a event like a GP even if you are hypothetically hands down the best player in the room.

I hate the reserved list.
Mythic rares are fine.
"I cannot stand Lorwyn and Shadowmoor! Those sets were so horrible and uncreative, I am glad they never got a sequel block!"
Said no one ever.
