In standard, he is a 20 dollar card. He fills a role in a popular and successful deck with no competition. I agree that this is a 5 - 10 dollar card in the long term. However, I think it's a very safe bet to hold that value for two reasons.
1. He is riding the pole right up to 30 bux right now, so this residual value will take a lot of time to wear off.
2. He's actually a pretty awesome creature. He is a 3/3 for 3, which is fair for a creature nowadays. He trades with pretty much anything if you want, since he can inflict 3+enemy's power to the enemy creature. First Strike on demand allows him to dominate most 1 and 2 drops that are not named Wild Nacatl. He owns Goblins (nice. piledriver.)
Now, I do not think he has a home in eternal formats yet, but he's so brutal in the creature matchup that I would not be surprised if he does eventually find a home. Also, remember he does combo with Volcano Hellion. Resolve both and the game either draws or you win, depending on whether you have more life than your opponent or not. This combo has been available before using Mogg Fanatic, Spitemare, or Stuffy Doll, but Reckoner is leagues more playable than any of those. I have a fun casual Boros Lifelink deck (Knight of the Meadowgrain? Lightning Helix? Yes plz) that rolls out wins using this combo pretty reliably.
Protip: Nearhearth Pilgrim is also a brutal beating with Hellion. Might even be instant win regardless of life totals; I'm not sure how the timing works on lifelink.
I got my playset at total trade value of around $40. It's $100 for a playset now, and I'm contemplating getting rid of them. I kinda want to keep them around though.
You can still find a ton under 19 dollars each as long as you are willing to shop at other stores besides Star City Games.
But yes its 100 for a playset if you must have Star City Reckoners.
Go ahead and throw your money away on a mediocre card. The only reason he looks so good is the rest of the set at large is so bad. He doesn't measure up to other 3 mana uncommon creatures like Leatherback Baloth or Woolly Thoctar. At best he uses his ability to go 1 for 1 in combat. He dies to everything, most times without any benefit. And he doesn't redirect the damage, he merely reciprocates and dies.
Bottom line is Boros Reckoner is a mediocre card in a very bad set(beyond standard and Limited). He may have potential in some combo or control build but alone in a RDW build he's really just mehhh.

I don't think many people are considering Reckoner for any more than Standard or Limited so saying that it's mediocre outside those areas is so obvious that actually stating it is redundant.
That means comparing it to 3 mana creatures that aren't Standard or Limited legal is asinine.
In Standard and Limited (you know, the two most popular formats) it's a house, though. It dies to very few removal/creatures that are actually played without gaining value and laughs at other common removal/creatures.
Anyone who believes Reckoner is mediocre in either Standard or Limited has very little experience with it in either enviroment or is just plain terrible at evaluating cards.

No. Paying $25 for a card that has a year and a half shelf life is asinine. And the only reason standard and limited are so popular is because it is the only way WOTC makes money you sheep.
As for standard and limited, well I don't play it much (a little limited). But since it is only a rare (not mythic) expect more than enough to be available. My guess is folks are sitting on them hoping to squeak out every nickle they can, which is fine but I wouldn't hold on to them for too long. As for my card evaluation skills, I considered this likely the best competitive card in the set. But again beyond standard and limited, its mediocre at best. Standard and Limited are popular because they're popular... I don't play those formats because WoTC tells me to, I play them because I enjoy playing them.
Also, if you know how to evaluate cards, Standard is probably the least expensive format (besides Limited) to play - I paid $3.00 each for my playset of Reckoners and even got a few extra... you know, to sell to people who can't evaluate cards when it increased in value.

So basically you suck at evaluating cards, all you are good at is evaluating formats
I think damagecase is right. This card is no Snapcaster or a Deathrite Shaman if you are going to get him, get him when it is cheap in case you didn't get it for cheap at first like redthirst did. This card will probably only get played in standard, barring some combo deck in modern. I'm a modern player who nearly always plays black decks and I wouldn't mind if my opponent played this instead of some hasty guy, protection guy, or a critter with a CIP (ETB) ability.
So, yeah. Don't dump all your money on this guy, he is just a beef that's looking for sauce, and that sauce (combo piece) is not ready yet.

I didn't buy Reckoner because it doesn't work in any format I play. And I wouldn't say Limited and Standard are most popular format because they are fun, they are popular because they have the most corporate backing, the most advertising and the most ground support for LCS.
And if you think my eval skills suck just wait. Like I said I don't evaluating for standard or limited.
And I don't think standard players and limit players are stupid or doing it wrong. All right guy, a few things:
1. It doesn't matter why Standard and Limited are the most popular - the fact is that they are the most popular so dismissing a card because it's "only" good in the most popular formats is just stupid.
2. Further, saying that a card's price isn't justified because it's "only" good in the most popular formats is equally stupid. Yes, Reckoner's price is almost guaranteed to come down because supply will, eventually, be better able to meet demand - not because people are going to figure out that it's not great in formats that most of them don't care about anyway.
3. Calling other people sheep doesn't make you look like some enlightened minority - it makes you look like some douchy hipster. Honestly, how would you feel about someone who says that you're a sheep for playing "established" formats because real players play formats that they make up themselves? That's roughly how ridiculous you look to me when you call Standard players sheep... especially when you make comments like us "being led to slaughter". What is that even suppose to mean? If you want to make a thread about not liking Standard, go do that, but if we're going to be evaluating rares from new sets, you're going to find people who are interested in talking about the cards in Standard and Limited environments. 98% of cards are not going to be played in eternal formats, but that doesn't make those 98% bad cards. Most cards are good in one format or another, and just because you don't play that format does not mean that a card isn't good in that format or doesn't warrant its price tag.
Boros Reckoner is a very good card. It's the best rare printed this block for Standard. It's better than Thragtusk against aggro decks, and it fits into the aggro decks that are doing very well right now. That said, I expect its price to fall to $~15 when the format balances out a bit.
Just saying that its the most popular doesnt make it the best format.
...WHO THE HELL SAID IT WAS THE BEST FORMAT?!?!
As far as Reckoner being overpriced, if you where good at evaluating cards you would have done the smart thing like preording them when they were 3 bucks and made a 60$+ profit? Cause that's exactly what I told all my associates to due and for the most part they got there playsets for 12-15 dollars.
Don't be mad because the card is expensive. Be mad at yourself for not being financially savvy. The smartest thing to do(which I doubt anyone took me up on because they have souls unlike me), would have been to pre-order several sets, trade for all the reckoners you could at pre-release time, then sit on them till the price peaked like it has now. When I used to trade, this is exactly the type of thing I would do and it's how you rapidly acquire cards. Who cares if it's only good in standard? That's why you turn the cards around for a profit if you only play modern/eternal formats.
LP, I'm checking your article out as well. Behind all of your swag is the brain of one of the most intelligent Magic players I've ever known. I guess that's one more thing for you to add to the wall of ego that is your Sally sig.
I can go with that. LK, you are the Mace Windu of red mages...cool, tempered logic in deliberation, but capable of just flat kicking tail when the situation warrants it.
Long story short, is now the best time to sell my Reckoners? It's just hit £23 on madhouse, no idea if it will keep rising
I am thinking that if it does rise it won't rise much more
However there's a GP on this weekend I believe so if he does well there (I know nothing about events) it is possible he could keep going up but I just don't see him going up a whole lot more
Boros Reckoner is good. Not in eternal formats, but most cards aren't. Who cares? If people want to pay 25$ for it, then more power to them. It will go down, and if i weren't using my only play set, i would denfianltly ship them out.

Boros Reckoner is basically the best card in the set hands down, as for the price I saw the price increase coming a mile away, but not that high. Good thing I already have a set (even though I don't play standard) cause I think it is a really good card, its the ultimate blocker and attacker in any scenario (I attack you die, you block you still die). Heck he is my new pet card, right after Deathrite Shaman which I also have a foil play set, which I also foresaw the price increase a mile away.
#1 - What's the dumbest idea you ever had?
#2 - 15/15 for 15?
#1 - Make it dumber
#2 - Give it protection from removal and counter?
#1 - DUMBER!
#2 - Add Timewalk?
#1 - DAMN IT MAN, I SAID DUMB!! DUMB !!!
#2 - It destroys everything when it attacks.... And wait, I have a friend who plays mill decks... I want to beat him too.

1)No dismissing a $5 card that has been hyped up to $25 is smart. Format not withstanding. But whatever.
2)Actually when the most popular format is constantly changing and has a new super card every three weeks...Think about it. Two weeks from now there'll be another OMG its amazing card and folks will forget about this.
3) Really? By the way though I called YOU a sheep, not standard players in general. And perhaps I'm not "enlightened" as you say but I dman sure know a dud when i see one. To this "when you make comments like us "being led to slaughter". What is that even suppose to mean? Do you think WoTC just fattening us Standard players up for sacrifice?" What precisely do you think rotation is? Or haven't you watched a $200 or $300 investment become a quarter of what you paid before? Perhaps I'm being a bit hyperbolic but I think that qualifies.
But hey, wolf's gotta eat right?
And for those who wonder why I even care, since our topic is most viable in a format I don't play, well I legitimately care about the health of the game in general and I don't see a bunch of new standard players being pissed off that their $100 investment is ultimately crap, being good for the game as a whole. Ultimately most players will settle into an eternal format but I'm familiar with more than a few people who have stopped playing because the investment is nearly always bad.

I would wait until after the pro tour this weekend. They're likely going to go up after.
It's pretty sheepish to be original for the sake of being original.

Don't be fooled by imitations. I'm the original sheep.

I advocate for the elimination of the combo archetype in Modern. I believe it is degenerate and unfun by its very nature and will always limit design space and cause unnecessary bans.
