token strategies survived just fine with ratchet bomb in standard, they'll adapt to work just fine around this little guy. given, I don't see much of a point for this card at the second, with lingering souls waiting to pop up at any moment, I can see the value of printing this for standard.
How about "You may discard your hand, pay 5 life, rip this card, remove 3 digits from any number of target fingers you control, and concede at the end of the next end step rather than pay It Will Go Through!!'s mana cost.

Although I agree, realize tokens were pushed harder in Innistrad block and Ravinica block pretty hard. Ratchet bomb was during Scars of Mirrodin when neither it or the preceding block had overwhelming tokens.
Is this as good as ratchet bomb? No way. But more relevant in the current standard.

I guess this was WotC's version of giving the finger to their accidental infinite combo. Makes me mad they had to kill token decks. I still think Bitterblossom gets unbanned in Modern because of this, I don't think I'm jumping the gun there.. It's not very narrow in Modern when it kills that deck and W/x Tokens. I believe it effects Lingering Jund as well? I'm not sure about that, as I don't know why they started running Souls in the first place(not sure if it's the lack of flying defense, or LS is highly played in Modern and that's their defense for it)
Just more card advantage, plays off of BBE, gives flying defense, allows jund to chip away at life. All things Jund looks for. I think you are correct about BB, and about decks looking to play LS in general.
Funny the decks it hurt the most either have access to enchantment removal, or are decks that would probably want to run this card.
There are a few token hate cards in GTC, but for no reason. Wizards expected tokens to be a powerful archetype, when it's really a tier 2 deck at best. I don't expect this to be in many sideboards.

the future future league is often wrong. they thought infect Would be tier 1.

This card is discouraging, to say the least. Seems to be very heavy-handed hate for Lingering Souls that may not kill Tokens dead, but it will make it difficult for what was at best a T2 deck to succeed with any consistency. The good news is that the meta doesn't have that many black decks and that Illness is unlikely to see many copies in a typical sideboard. Just going to be a pain knowing that black will now have as easy an answer for the deck as control did before with Sphere, Verdict, and Terminus.

Oddly enough the deck most likely to be able to board something like this in its current state is the very deck it's intended to defeat.

That is true. Its like Necropotence. Black loves and hates it. I have no problem with this card being heavy handed cause...its....black. There is no kill like over kill with black. I thought Engineered Plauge was fun. Play two of them nameing slivers, goblins, or elves and shake your opponents hand: "great game sir!". Of course its mainly side board material. Illness in the Ranks is cheaper, but name restricted. There are ALOT of decks floating around, and there are many things to side board against. Thus don't worry about it unless you are a guy in kerrville, texas who plays nothing but tokens. I am totally meta gaming you.

Don't see the problem with this card. It has a lot of flavour in my opinion. Rest in Peace hoses much more decks and hoses harder, so I don't see why tokens shouldn't have hate cards of their own.
I don't like this card only because of how direct and blunt of a Hoser it is, that being said, unless tokens DO take off and become one of the dominate decks of the format, this deck will never see standard play and will not ever be a problem for people playing tokens. It is entirely too narrow for people to side in when they do not KNOW FOR FACT they will play against multiple token heavy decks.
Ratchet bomb was also goo against delver. And many other low cost cards of the format it was played in.
Please stop saying this is the end of tokens in standard, because that is far from true guys, please use logic.

I had not yet considered this possibility

Multiplayer Decks- Memnarch - Animar, Soul of Elements - Zur, the Enchanter - Atraxa, Praetors' Voice - Food Chain Tazri - Teysa Karlov
Modern BUMill and Bant Spirits.
Thank you Xenphire for the signature!
Dont forget your playset of curse of death's hold

I'm not really sure about that. There have been enough cards that interact specifically with tokens (any Populate card, Parallel Evolution, Rhys the Redeemed, Dogged Hunter, Aether Snap, Intangible Virtue) that there is definitely some kind of difference.

It would have neutered selesnya, dude.
That would have been an absolutely horrible decision for limited.
