Haven't logged-in in a while, but was really looking forward to gatecrash because I am a huge fan of W/B. In my local magic community I am kinda known for it. Looking over the cards in the set I felt a great deal of disappointment. Maybe there are some hidden jems like devour flesh that I will come to like but as it is right now, for a white black player nothing from the set excites me.
I have been looking forward to gatecrash for over a year, but I should of clued into the fact that it would be bad for constructed when deathpact angel was released. I was a huge fan of desolation angel, it is one of my favorite cards, and angel of despair was alright. When they released deathpact angel my heart sunk. Sure it will be good in draft I guess but...
I am just indifferent to the set. It brings about no emotion in me other than disappointment maybe.
i'm gonna play orzhov at prerelease only for the flavor...
Apart from that only boros seems very good for contructed, while gruul seems a good way to go aggro in a draft.

Very very unhappy about the 5 drop enchantment that gives +3/+3 and haste. I guess oakenform was too good to be in one color and be so grossly undercosted.
what I really dont get here is the haste granting. what does it do? rely on a 1 drop you have in hand? I bet this card had trample or something on it and was changed cuz limited stalemates are way more fun.
NO when you go two colors you get better NOT WORSE for the same total mana. WB mind rot has the same problem. The inclusion of W mana should have got you the 2 life for free.
this is the problem I have with this set. apart from most boros and some simic cards, almost everything is grossly overcosted. especially dimir and orzhov. If they powered down all guilds in DGM a bit ok, but give them all the same love in their respective sets, would ya? Besides the art (which I think is gorgeous mostly), there are so many cards that make me think "this would be really fun and interesting to build around... forget it, just too expensive..."
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
Dimir looks unplayable. I have a feeling that I'm going to be going U/X/b splashing black for the looter and removal a lot.
The best card in the set (for me) is Bane Ally Broker. I'm going to have 50 copies by the time Dragon's Maze hits.

I think the majority of the cards are costed fairly...there's just those 2-3 cards per guild that are overcosted and it sucks. Like for Orzhov: I guess they were super scared that Shrieking Affliction discard deck would rule the format, because Purge the Profane and Vizkopa Confessor were priced too high to be viable anywhere including limited. Primal Visitation could easily have cost :1mana::symr::symg: and still been barely limited playable, etc.

I really just want to have a playset of all these cards. Some are really playable, some have really awesome art. Some make my inner timmy want to make a > 5cmc beatstuff deck, some are sure to be awesome curve fitting creatures for the next few standard seasons.
I am with love
I feel the same just because the cards have awesome art. Some cards have so much graphic win that even if what they do is stupid, I want to use them, sleeve them, then unsleeve them, maybe sleeve them again and... play with them?! I guess I'm turning into a card art lover from timmy/johnny and my flavor senses are about get numbed.
On other news, out of purely spike motivation I will pick Boros because of their pre-release card and the guild booster rare playability. I hope to crack a lot of green and red commons and back them with the white/boros uncommons which seem to offer a lot of good stuff.
In short, I'll go Naya (as most newbs say).
Cult of the Succubi Eating Kitten and Brotherhood of Hamsters - Zombie One/Hulking One - Brotherhood of Hamsters disapproves of Damage on the Stack amputation, the corruption of Mythics, and the "Major changes to Extended" in July 2010. You aborted our cards., but we approve of the Modern format. Even if it doesn't ha ve Carrion Feeder or Caller of the Claw in it.

So, anyone else see a constructed deck with a ton of Boros 2 drops that plays Immortal Servitude to bring them all back? It's a good thing that haste granting gobbo was a 3 drop...
Ok I don't really either, but fun for the kitchen...
I think that is a very strong hate card, that will stop a lot of token strategies. Whats your opinion on this. Are the days of Lingering Souls counted in Standard?
They could have reprinted Engineered Plague and saved a lot of whining, but that wouldn't sell more boosters than this one, would it?

I hate it. It's forcing token decks to really commit and run Intangible Virtue and Side in all 4 Naturalizes/Sundering Growths.
The thing is, I don't think the token thing needed to be stopped. It's not like it was so many years ago when mono Blue was out of control and beating everything. So when sets made cards to destroy all islands, or make blue spells costs 2 more, people never complained because it was needed. The token strategies aren't anywhere near as powerful and dominant as those mono-blue decks were.
I fear Wizards drastically reduced the number of matchup permutations in Standard by printing that card. Not happy.
In terms of constructed playability, Boros got the best.
In terms of artwork, Orzhov and Simic are well done.
I don't know how to feel about Gruul and Dimir. Gruul has some nice flavor text, and Dimir...well...it's Dimir.
I'll be playing Boros at the prerelease because I need some cards for my EDH plus Boros is my favorite guild.
I like this set and there are a few things that i want out of this set. Boros and Orzhov are by far the best guilds in the set. I think both of those could work together to make a good limited combo. You get a lot of small low casting cost creature and that can trigger off batalion and extort. Its a win win
I am so disappointed in this set that I am canceling my box honestly. I don't plan on playing boros and the set pretty much caters to them only..a few Orzhov cards I am interested in but at this point I would be better off buying the cards I need rather than taking a chance on a box and getting 8/10 of it as unplayable cards for constructed..drafting seems iffy with this set as well but could prove to be fun...I was hoping for better cards to be spoiled but that didn't happen..that is my .02 just thought this set would help a lot of the guilds and was hoping for something to bump Jund up a bit but nothing seems to really help that cause.
I'm disappointed but I didn't like RTR so that kinda factors into it. The prereales I'm going Boros then hoping to open some supporting Gruul cards and go naya.

RTR was great (except for Izzet being slightly underpowered and just generally not that fun to play unless splashing in another color), and Gatecrash looks like trash. I will be cancelling my box and not doing drafts nearly as often as I did with RTR.
Totally playing Gruul at the prerelease now. Every creature or spell they have says "Kick you in the face"!!! The beats will just keep on coming with them.
I think that Cypher will end up controlling Standard in one way or another. Whether its this set or the next, one or two Cypher cards will cause chaos and everyone who's saying its over-priced garbage in 1-4months will be screaming for balance.
If you're drafting RTR/RTR/GTC you can draft Goblin Electromancers, some fliers and that unblockable spirit, and make those cipher costs reasonable. I have a feeling that cipher cards won't be popular in limited until people start abusing the mechanic.
It definitely looks like it suffers from second set syndrome. I'm dissapointed dimir turned out so weak, since they're my favourite guild. A few of the cards look good but the majority will be unplayable in constructed.

GTC is a "large" set, so it'll be drafted by itself (GTC/GTC/GTC)
Orzhov has most of the removal, combined with some very powerful monoblack mill engines and interactions. RUG could definitely make some waves - flying evolve creatures with bloodrush (and sometimes trample)? SURPRISE, I win!
Cipher is too expensive to be playable, even in limited.
Gruul is a great supporting guild, but doesn't IMO have enough meat to stand on its own
The unrevealed cards mostly are horrid. I can see why they didn't want these things sneaking out.
So Gatecrash ended up being a below-average set overall with a few standout cards... and Boros.
Oh. My. Glob.
Boros got so many toys I'm rubbing my hands with glee and am so glad I secured a playset of Sacred Foundries well ahead of time. Seriously, I pored through the list and thought, "blah. blah, why?, meh reprint, AMAZING BOROS CARD, meh, blah, ick, BOROS, blah..." You get the idea.
I do like the mounting storyline of the guildless ("Gateless") starting to rise up against the guilds, which I'm sure will be resolved in Dragon's Maze.
SO, yeah, I'm going to enjoy playing Boros. A lot.
Go look at the cards in RTR again. Look through the whole set. You have 3 mythics at $15 or $20 (Angel, Jace, and Sphinx's Revelation) and Deathrite Shaman at $18 and a lot of mediocre stuff.
Gatecrash has what will be 3 of the 4 best burn spells in standard (Skullcrack, Aurelia's Fury, Boros Charm), a creature that will be the best in standard (Ghost Council), the best creature removal in Orzhov Charm, a very versatile Simic charm, the best EDH cards we've seen in a while in the Primordials and more, and a lot of sleepers that you will see rise in price (Blind Obedience, Gyre Sage, Realmwright, Legion Loyalist). The synergies of the Evolve creatures will probably impress as well. This is a strong set, you're a whiner and don't know what you're talking about.
