They better print something to help nerf this card when they spoil the rest of the set. As it stands the best way to deal with this card is to play your own ghost council. Hello chase mythic.

There are 10 types of people in this world, those that understand binary and those that don't.
do people even play those? lol i actually dont know but seems like they dont. i think is point is that MOST the removal being played this guy avoids. i would thinks thats more enough to consider him plausible . cant ask much more from a card guy
I run Slip often, and will continue to do so in my Orzhov deck. It's cheap, it's instant, and it can blast alot of very powerful creatures. I look forward to letting chumps block, then dropping it with Extort behind it.
And the best part? I can deal with Council in a mirror match. And to think ppl questioned me using it. Ha!

Sure it dies to instant speed removal... however Orzhov decks will likely run instant speed blink as well... Cloudshift may very well see play here on top of Restos. Not to mention the Charm may very well have a blink effect too.
I'm not sure if this guy beats everyone's favorite 4G beast in competitive builds yet, but I know one thing for sure. Decks will run both and those decks will be a beast to beat.
They've already got the manabase, the lingering spirits and the unburial rites. Toss in a Grislebrand and you've got an outlet to spend the life you gain.

i was referring to the use of murder and tribute lol but yeah slip is good. im an orzhov guy myself excited for those plays
Many of you see this card as not being great, but its better in somany ways than thragtusk and geralf's messenger.
1. Life gain is small, but loosing life as well without coming into play tapped is awsome
2. dodges sorcery, enchanments, and abrupt decay. Jund has to run Murder now or some of gatecrashes new instant black spells
3. is targetable by resto angel
4. Cavern of souls supports him in the right deck
5. Guildpact needed a beat stick, now we have one.
6. Has a fat butt to withstand burn and ignores thundermaw hellkite
Disadvantages
1. legendary
2. mana cost is difficult in 3 or more colors.
3. Selsynia charm, murder, Tribute to hunger, victim of night punch his doughnut. Also there are unknown instant kill cards coming
4. HASTE on your next turn, wait that's somewhat normal?
5. can't block
I am most concerned about not blocking, thus you must build your deck to play a certain tempo. He is cool card, but blocking right now saves your life. Life gain is minimal in comparison to other creature color bombs. He will cost $ but not any more than Resto angel in my opinion.
Talking abou removals, from the about 10 most played instant speed removal, only 5 can hit him, being 3 of them conditional (Azorius charm, Tragic Slip, Brimstone Volley), and the other 2 a bit cost restrictive (Victm of the night and Selesnya Charm)
We should remember that Black have discard, and I'm hoping for a decent BW discard card (too bad Castigate won't be back), and a simple Duress before attacking (maybe boosted by some extort triggers) can make sure that at last the 3 conditional removal don't have a chance to hit.
I was a bit disapointed with extort, but thinking better, it can be very useful specially with mid-late game discard and removals.
Obzedat is absolutely bonkers. If this is not the best card in the set, I really don't understand what else they printed that was so busted.
Since its P/T to Cmc is =, how many different types of decks will Obzedat be played in?
I don't really think it is a Control card, since it doesn't block. The drain life is nice, but you are never going to want to tap out for this. On a positive note for control, it can't be stolen by Threaten effects, which is probably about the only way that Red can affect this card.
Obzedat is probably one of the best mid-range cards in Standard. The choices of Obzedat and Thragtusk in the 5cc slot is going to go back and forth for some time. On a positive note, Thragtusk can block and kill Obzedat. In fact, Obzedat might make Thragtusk even more prevalent in Standard. A deck with both Obzedat AND Thragtusk? Slot in Restoration Angel in the 4cc slot, perhaps Rhox Faithmender and Centaur Healer, and there is no way that Aggro beats this deck. Red is going to have to have a Sulfuric Vortex effect in Standard with all of the life gain running around.
Obzedat is possible at the top end of an aggro curve, but for 5cc, I would probably rather run Thundermaw Hellkite with my 24 land aggro deck.
In short, this card is going to see a ton of play, but I predict it will fall into mid-range decks much, much faster than any control or aggro variants.
So is this like the super secret ghost council above and in charge of the first ghost council which is so secretive that only the lesser ghost council knows of its existence? Because that would be awesome to have a completely superfluous second layer of secretive spiritual bureaucracy.
ETB effects and avoids sorcery-speed removal. The sheep will love it.
By sheep I assume you mean seasoned vets and ppl whom have been waiting for w/b drain to come back? Or did you mean any player who knows a good card when they see one?
Or are you some kind of Ovimancer?

He's good. No doubt. But if I see another comparison to Thragtusk I'm going to poke out my eyeball.
I'm interested in the rest of the set first to see where he ends up. There is NO meta with Gatecrash at all. Its very easy to say he can end up in a SB or Main deck, sucks vs aggro or not as good as X. But when its all said and done as he sits right now, with what we know he's good.
He's no Thragtusk, he's no Titan. But he's a very good Orzov card.

Exactly, and even if his power level is comparable to Thragtusk, Thragtusk is so popular right now because of his 4G casting cost, so he can be splashed in every Deck-XYZ.dec. If he cost 1WWGG he would see much less play. A lot of people forget, you do have to pay for your cards.
This guy will see some play in standard, he's just too insane not to. All you got to do is basically stay alive and this card, plus the other extort cards, will just sit back and win you the game. Without Gatecrash spoilers, Selesyna Charm, Murder, or a morbid tragic slip seem to be the best ways to deal with this card.

yes that is true! but then again we do have an extremly spoiled mana base in standard and people love to play multi colored decks for some reason. so i think the mana cost restriction is less restricting nowa days COMPARED to previous metas
He's crazy strong. No doubt about it. But honestly, as a Bant Control player I'm looking forward to other players using him. I think I'm positioned fairly well to deal with him since I main deck Selesnya Charm, Syncopate, and Alchemist Refuge. With that said, I think many other decks will struggle which I feel leaves me in a pretty good place in the meta. This is all still very early though. Who knows, maybe B/W gets some stuff to go along with him that really hurts me too. Time will tell.
playable outside of standard? Is this card good enough for modern? Lots of instant speed removal there so I am guessing no. Not as good a win con as batterskull and the like.
I still don't get where people are making the argument that you can just fit this into any deck. Are you playing BW only? Are you playing GBW with farseek? In those cases you can probably cast this on curve a decent amount of the time. If you're throwing in extra colors and/or not playing farseek you might have trouble.
I play a lot of GW, and when I had Trostani in the deck I would often be missing one of the colored mana required to play it. And that is WITH arbor elf and avacyn's pilgrim and only in 2 colors. Now imagine how often that is going to happen once you throw in extra colors and don't have green manafixing.
One of the biggest reasons Thragtusk is so rampant is because he is easy to cast (even to splash for). This is not the same.

What the heck is Alchemist refuge going to do??? Flash in supreme Verdict? If you hit EVERY land drop, it would still take till turn 8 to cast verdict. And they is unlikely to say the least. So I would say turn 9-10 before you can flash verdict. By that time they already got value out of this guy.

Probably the deck where Obzedat will be played will have counters and removal too. Now, what it's better late game, Thragtusk or Obzedat? let's think your Bant Control vs an Esper Control.
Agree, I think that the card is seriously overhyped, both by fans and by Wizards. Tomorrow StarCityGames will offer you preorders of this card at 20 or 25 bucks, watch your money... that happened too with Niv-Mizzet and now it's a 2 dollar Mythic.
