Syncopate is good, having the ability to counter any type of spell as early as 2nd turn and to exile it is solid especially with flashback and scavenge in the environment. We've also got to remember that Mana Leak is rotating and unless something else shows up, this will have to fill the void.
XU counters with an upside have always been right on the borderline of playability, they are worse than a Mana Leak early game and worse than a Dissipate late game but the fact that they are still playable at all stages of the game makes them decent.
You know what I think would be hilarious? An uncounterable rare counterspell that can target only instants. That'd be a riot!

Cryptic Command? There aren't many good counterspells in ISD either, not that counters are any kind of good right now.
Cryptic Command is on a different level compared to Broken Ambition. One costs 4 mana and the other costs 2 (at minimum). You can't win a competitive deck if your earliest play starts from turn 4 anyway.
It's still not colorless, and has no color. That's a paradox. So either you're a Zen master or an idiot, I'll assume the Zen master for sake of argument. This card will have no paradoxes because it has a clear paradox. Deep stuff man.

And then there'll be spells with "can't be exiled while it's a spell". And later there'll be spells which deal with them. Even the first step in this vicious cycle - "can't be countered" - looks fishy and "temporary fix"-y enough.
Not so sure about the usefulness of this card, but if everyone says Broken Ambitions card was playable, I'll take their word. Still, with X=<2 that's worse mana leak (unless something graveyard-themed is countered... although this may be a point, and the place of original printing suggests this scenario) and with X>2 this is worse Cancel.
So... anti-graveyard counter?
Edit: and the new art is... to put mildly, definitely not my cup of tea. Plus, I look at the armor on the original art and I love it.
I'm an art student, and I tell you, the art is pretty damn fine! And personally I find the girl pictured quite good-looking, too. Very nice. I don't always like fanservice, but when it's executed discreetly like this, I can enjoy it. I think Mana Leak and especially the INN Dissipate have really nice art that slightly better this one, but this follows them closely.

i think in my miracle u/w draw go , etc it might work.. i am excited to try... i just wish i could ramp quicker to turn four mana for supreme judgement...with some of those hawks that u sacrafice, there turn two could be countered if they dont have a cavern... i like art so sick
I can't afford a decent mana base, making the double blue on dissipate a problem for me in a three colour deck.... lands take up most of the budget of the deck :S... Can't have too many gates.
I have had a lot of times where mana leak was useless because my opponent had too much mana. However there is the maybe wanting to play something at some point problem when once I had 4 mana I could play Augur of bolas and leave mana leak up. I'd probably want to leave up three mana most of the time now.
then there is the well is there any point in counterspells anymore if everything is uncounterable :S.
Artwork is cool. Whoever thinks this looks like a 12 year old boy has been hanging around with some very odd looking 12 year old boys.
Given the fashion these days, frankly, I would not be surprised.
OT: I like this card. I mean yeah it's no Mana Leak but it's a fair counter, and I doubt this will be the only one we'll see. It's going to impact Limited at least, doubt it in Standard but we'll see. While this is more splasheable, I do think Dissipate is better then this past turn 2.

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
Counterspells are just blue destroy effects that are aimed at spells on the stack instead of stuff on the field. This cycle is just "indestructible". Big deal.
I'm not too happy about this spell unless theres plenty of "mother, may I "spells this block. Plus the art is incredibly ugly with the whole "12 year old boy" look on a a female.
Well I'd get use to it, balanced counter magic is the way it will be from now on, if you've been paying any attention to the trend that's what Wizards is moving towards. They officially admitted Mana Leak is too much, so don't expect any better than Syncopate (which really basically is a mana link turn 2 against most decks and late game is better).
This isn't a bad card by any stretch anyway, I don't get the complaints. It's basically a mana leak early anyway, mid game is easier to cast than cancel, and late game is better than a bunch of mana leaks as well. So can anyone explain why this is a dissapointing card? Honestly this is how counter magic should be done.
Use this early on when the enemy is using all his mana to cast spells, or later when the enemy can't tap lands after casting a bomb. Just 1 or 2 copies in my control decks so that people could still say that I'm playing control.
Being more of a control player than aggro, I kinda feel sad. But I understand WOTC's intentions after years of mana leak dominance. Players deserve a chance to play their cards.
I'll just wait for boros to come out and unleash my weenie aggro side.

I'm confused. This card is exactly what control needs. It's no mana leak, but it fills an important role, AND has the upside of exiling people's flashback spells

I don't know if I've seen anyone mention the upside of exiling the spell. It's a pretty huge upside in this format, if spells just went to the graveyard it'd be terrible and wouldn't see any play.

Control has always had most of its problem against Aggro. In an aggro setting Essence Scatter is a lot better than this card. I'd rather play 2 Essence Scatter than 2 Syncopate.
How is it an early Mana leak if you are on the draw? God help you if you lose the dice toss. Mid/Late-game it is a worse Dissipate. Realistically it's niche due to X cost and the mechanics of the game.
Control mirror isn't too worried about I/S in an environment with..very mediocre counter spells. Play hex proof win-cons. Yes, they could always wrath it, but in the mirror you can use Dissipate as a catch-all (You'll have the mana...).
Do people really believe this? It's like no one ever resolved a Titan with Mana Leak in the format or something...
You can answer it by yourself I guess. Was mana leak unfair or not? Higher ups did admit that it was and now gave us this counterspell (along with cavern and "cannot be countered" mechanic).

You don't play it because it's good against Aggro, you play it cuz it counters what you need it to. Counters lingering souls, garruk and geralf's messenger. So not BETTER than scatter, just more flexible

Ironically, your so-called "not really a counterspell" is probably going to see more play than the "4/4 for 3cmc and two positive abilities".
