So, what kinds of crazy things happened for everyone over the prerelease weekend? What cards were better than expected, or not as good as advertised? How were your decks? Share stories here!
I'll start.
I played in 3 Sealed events, going 4-1, 3-0-1 and 4-2. The last deck probably shouldn't have lost if not for mana issues, since I had Wolfbitten Captive, Mayor of Avabruck, and Huntmaster of the Fells. The first pool was fun; I opened Mikaeus, the Lunarch and strong green so I played G/W. But I built a secondary deck that worked out really well: Burning Vengeance. It was Grixis with a Plains for Burning Oil and a Forest for Memory's Journey, and had such goodness as Vengeance, Runechanter's Pike, Delver of Secrets, Gravecrawler with a few Zombies, Mystic Retrieval and about 8-10 total Flashback cards. It won a match by itself and stole a couple games when my opponents planned for the G/W deck.
MVPs:
Huntmaster: Everyone knew it was a bomb, but this card plain ends games when it hits the board. If you have ways to manipulate the spell count (like Travel Preparations for example), he's ridiculously hard to handle.
Sever the Bloodline: Not a new card, I know. But with Undying running around now, this card's stock just shot through the roof. If I was in pack 3 of a draft and I was drafting G/W, I would first-pick Sever and splash for it now. Probably the top card in Innistrad in limited now.
Hunger of the Howlpack: This thing is a blowout. Not always a combat trick like some people seem to want it to be, it acts more like an Aura but it's just so efficient.
Underrated:
Archangel's Light: Not that I'm surprised about it since I liked the card all along, but everyone else was crying about it, and I watched at least 3 matches be won thanks to this card.
Niblis of the Mist: Its Urn counterpart was expected to be good. But the less hyped one still pulled its weight well. A lot of games I saw or played were decided by this guy.
Black Cat: I ran into a few of these, and every time, it locked up the board because I'd be holding something I didn't want to risk losing. Definitely a thorn.
Curse of Echoes: I never would have believed it if I didn't see it, but I saw this card blow people out. Probably still not good enough for the maindeck, but if you run into a Tokens deck, dropping Echoes ruins their day.
Soul Seizer: I'm only putting this here because some people were unsure about it. In a vacuum, it might not be that impressive. But this is not a vacuum. With a little help, this card's as good as anything else you could pick. I had 2 games that displayed this. First, my opponent had Beguiler of Wills but never got a chance to activate it, as I bounced it with Silent Departure then dropped Seizer. He was unable to deal with it, so he couldn't play his bomb. This shows the control it can have on a game, forcing your opponent to hold back huge threats. Second, my opponent had Bloodgift Demon out, so to deal with it, I played a Battleground Geist and equipped Seizer with Silver-Inlaid Dagger, and proceeded to attack with my 4/3 Mind Controller. He was forced to block with his Demon, resulting in a trade I was perfectly fine with.
Overrrated:
Increasing Confusion: I only saw it used a couple times, and to be fair, one of those times it won the game. But in general, it seemed like it didn't do quite enough on its own. I'd still pick it early - even first - and build around it, but it's not the automatic windmill I thought it would be.
Sorin, Lord of Markov: I played against him a couple times, and honestly, I didn't even bother attacking him half the time. Really not that big a threat in limited, unless you manage to build a Tokens deck around him.
You think Sorin is Overrated? I lost to him and a almost prefect vampire Deck...
A 1/1 Lifelinker every turn + Bloodline Keeper was devastating.
My opponent had so much luck to pull both a Sorin and a Liliana. Argh.
Chosen of Markov was interesting, you can choose which Creature type you needed, for a Human Sacrifice or to gain Benefits from other Vampires.
I beg to differ on Sorin. My pool lacked creatures but I pulled him so I had to make due with what was given. I went 2-2 and the games that I had Sorin out were the games I won. He generated the defense that was needed and when I didn't need more, he just made them even stronger.
In limited, his abilities are extremely relevant, granted he is no elspeth, knight errant
Ravenous Demon was my MVP... esp since I could give any of my humans Undying thanks to 3 Undying Evil. It was a fun trick that only backfired on me once.
My second prerelease someone placed that double dammage curse on me... then put the black redirect dammage from a creature to player on my guy... then Blasphemous Act next turn. I had total board possition as well. But at least it makes for a great tale!
I went 3-1-1 with W/B, Bloodline keeper being my bomb. I normally go on Sunday when the average age of each participant is 14, this time I went Friday night to play with the older crowd. I was shocked at how all the older magic players acted, they were all very rude and openly talked bad about me and my deck while I was playing them. Even when I beat them they would just talk about how lucky I was to get a win with such an awful deck. While they played better then the young ones, their decks were poorly constructed and is the reason for their losses. I think from now on I will be attending the pre releases with all the goof-balls.
Round 2, game 1, very back and forth, and finally, I was totally on the ropes. Pulled Lambholdt Elder, passed the turn. Opponent, with a lot of flying support which I had none of at that moment, swung with all his flyers. I moonmisted out, flipping, and swinging in with my werewolf, with an executioner's hood on. Next turn, he swung, for some inexplicable reason, with part power, taking me to two...and into Fateful Hour territory. Next turn, I played Gather the Townsfolk for 5 tokens, swung again with my Intimi-wolf, and passed the turn. Opponent's turn, I play Clinging Mists, I swung all out, and won a game I had absolutely no business winning.
My MVP was Soul Seizer. I was running a W/U spirit deck, and whenever it hit the field, my opponents had to choose between losing their best creature, or letting my larger spirits smash face. Turns out, it's a lose-lose situation, and I would have gone 5-0 if not for two stupid mistakes (playing a R/B vamp deck my first match and not killing a Torturer that got too big to kill when they kept saccing a Mausoleum Guard and it's tokens with an Unburial Rites).

Ran 4 colors off of 2 traveler's amulets and an evolving wilds. Had to because I wanted to play as many rares and removal as possible. Went 3-1, losing to a streamlined G/W aggro with kessig cagebreakers.
3-0'ed other one with a r/w aggro deck. Just a bunch of commons and uncommon duders that were cheap and rally the peasants. Beat a Sorin with that deck. Only rare was the r/w dual land. May have been kinda lucky, but I thought I played alright.
Couple friends had 6-7 rares in their decks which were mostly on-color. Sorta disgusted by that.
I went 3-1-1 with W/B, Bloodline keeper being my bomb. I normally go on Sunday when the average age of each participant is 14, this time I went Friday night to play with the older crowd. I was shocked at how all the older magic players acted, they were all very rude and openly talked bad about me and my deck while I was playing them. .
Wow, that is a bit of a shock actually... I had the opposite thing happen... the biggest loudmouths and smack talkers were the snotty young kids. Just goes to show, different stores draw different crowds!
Saturday was a poor day for me. I got the bye round one, won round two and then proceeded to draw nothing but land. Went 2-3 before I dropped. Bombs were Mikaeus, the Unhollowed, Bloodline Keeper, and Angelic Overseer in the deck. Got a Snapcaster, Mayor of Avabrook, and a few other good rares. Sadly I had no amulets or wilds, so splashing was a no go.
Niblis of the Urn was fantastic at pushing damage through and attacking into the decks that splash white or blue just to get some flying defense in. Thanks for the heads up on that guy Kevin!
Gravepurge is great in this format, was able to restock after long fought stalemates and even negate some of my opponents mill when it was targeted at me.
I was also surprised how well Undying Evil worked (and wished I used the one I got in my first pool), I'm definitely going to be picking those high if I end up black in any given draft.
Aside from all that, I got my ass kicked by Huntmaster of the Fells, fat Undying guys, and a Grimgrin that just wouldn't go away...
Other turnaround I had was someone who was making fantastic use of an Avacyn's Collar to make spirits to nickle and dime me. Finally, I had enough mana, and swung in with 4 little creatures. He blocks one, and Spidery Grasps his blocker, I double Rally the Peasents in return. 15 life points, and his MVP later, I was in the winning seat, and took the game.
Went to 3 sealed events, and my 2nd one was by far my best open. BR splashing white for Unburial Rites. It was the slowest deck known to man, but very bomby and if I could stabilize by turn 4-5, I was pretty much guaranteed to win.
Best game was when my opponent resolved a Falkenrath Noble on turn 4, and by my turn 6, had 4 other dudes out and I'm at 10 life. I slam Reaper from the Abyss on turn 6 with a Falkenrath Torturer out, by far my worst card. Every turn after that, mine as well as my opponents, I did not miss a morbid trigger. I sac'd the Falkenrath Torturer to himself to trigger morbid at end of turn, to kill his Falkenrath Noble and fall to 8 life. After that, it was removal spell after removal spell. The coolest play was when he had a Geistcatcher's Rig out when I'm at 4. He is at 12. My turn, I have a Devil's Play in the yard (due to Black Cat random discard) I COULD of flash it back for 5 dmg to kill the rig, but it didn't seem right. So I Unburial Rites my Falkenrath Torturer (of all things, lol) and sac him to himself to trigger morbid and knock out the Geistcatcher's Rig. My opponent conceded a good match, and I went on to not lose a match the rest of the day. Was a lot of fun.
I had some nice bombs but got mana screwed a lot so I didn't finish well (one round I got 5 lands total for both games). Which is very frustrating because I stomped every game I didn't get land screwed. Alpha Brawl is nuts in limited.
My best friend however tied for first. Then, before prizes could be handed out, it was discovered that the guy he tied with was cheating. He got DQ'ed and my friend got the first place prize all to himself and everyone else down the line got more stuff.
I opened less than 7 dollars in cards. The only thing worth more than a dollar I opened was a parallel lives. Yeah. Worst picks ever. You know what? Took 4th place
Took a good friend of mine, paid her entry fee...she opened a Liliana, a Mayor, a Gravecrawler, a Reaver, a foil Evolving Wilds, a Magehunter, and Snapcaster. I almost died

Currently Getting Back into the swing of MTGS. Bear with me folks~
I went 5-1 (out of around 50 people) with R/W aggro splashing black for Stromkirk Captain. All of my red creatures were Vampires except for a Hellrider so the captain was really good when I drew him. I also got a Mentor of the Meek which triggered on almost every creature I had, except for the Hellrider and a Galvanic Juggernaut. Burning Oil was definitely one of the best cards I had in my deck, It was clutch against other combat tricks to blow them out. I lost to my friend playing a B/W tokens deck and had a close game one and lost game two by playing only 6 spells over 10ish turns.
Well me friend and opponent pulled a Hellrider... 95ish percent of his nonland cards were creatures, so he finished me off quickly
I pulled a garruk which was far too weak. It could have been because the decks I played had loads of flyers and tappers, so he was destroyed quickly.
I pulled 3 black cats and 2 undying evils. Each time I got both out I won. I would whack at them for one every turn until the got the nerve to destroy it. Meanwhile I held onto an undying evil. And I laughed when he traded his niblis for it.

i tested jace tonight and its one of the worst planeswalkers. it never really does anything except make u lose. i suggest u sell yours for 17 each like i did.
then again on valakut
ROFL what? Valakut? The best card in standard is Jace the mind Sculptor
hm.... interesting.
Haters gonna hate on my jank decks.
played in a 2HG prerelease with my brother and we took first going 3-0-1 we tied in round 3 to the guys who took 2nd kinda sucked cuz we had them down to 2 life if the game had gone on 2 turns longer we would have won my brothers next draw was gnaw to the bone which would flipped my chalice of life and ended it
I opened less than 7 dollars in cards. The only thing worth more than a dollar I opened was a parallel lives. Yeah. Worst picks ever. You know what? Took 4th place
That's the beauty of Sealed though. I had a pool with Huntmaster, Mikaes 2, Ravenous Demon, the new Angel, and Devine Reckoning... I went BWu with my support cards (no good GR other than Huntmaster)... but did horribly. Most of my losses were due to mana issues though, unfortunately. By the time I tweaked the deck enough to make it hummm... I had already lost 2 rounds.
Had an awesome pool at the midnight prerelease: Grimgrin, Mikaeus the unhallowed, Helleider and two Juggernauts with a grotto and Sulfur Falls for color fixing. Went Grixis for Grimgrin, a think twice and a Silent Departure. Ended up going 4-0-1 for 24 packs and even got to live the dream Of having a juggernaut and Grimgrin on board to set up a devastating engine. Also, Hellrider is a rediculous bomb in any creature heavy deck and undying evil on a Juggernaut ( I pulled three Undying Evils) is just sick when they have to get rid of it.
Yeah the beauty of sealed is you can still win with some pretty crummy pools but on the flip side the winner is almost always someone who got the nut pool and knows how to build a deck.
For me I opened vault of the archangel (underrated card IMO), requiem angel (very underwhelming card actually... got her out 3 times and only got one spirit out of her... wouldn't play her again), isolated chapel, and some chaff. Sadly that is one of my better pulls at prereleases too (I have terrible luck in what I pull but have a lot of fun regardless). I ended up going U/W spirits (I opened two of the uncommon spirit captain... captain morgan references abounded... me and the captain making it happen) splashing black for a couple cards and the vault.
I ended up in 4th (out of 30) while going to time on 2 of my matches. One of them I was getting creamed in and managed to get a draw by flashbacking silent departure one turn and feeling of dread the next (the OT went off in my turn so the opp only had two more turns) to lock up his fatties both of his turns. In the other OT experience I won on the last turn (of the 5 turn OT clock) with me at 28 and my opponent at one when I swung through and got a 1/1 spirit through. I would have easily beat him but once they clock went on I did some quick math and realized the only way I could win was with full team swings (some into unfavorable matchups) each turn as I was consistently getting 2-3 damage a turn through while gaining huge chunks of life (yay vault!) but he was at 12... so I swung like mad and punched a bunch of damage through on my first two swings (while clearing the board up quite a bit) and just barely squeaked it out with my 1/1 spirit on my third and final swing (had a couple other dudes out who got blocked). hahahaha. In that same game I used silent departure on (2) different 5/5 demon tokens as the guy had a skirsdag high priest which he used to full effect (he triggered it 4 times in that game alone). Great time! I just wish the promo had been better. Elbrus would have made a fantastic promo for example!
Yea my first sealed, I played BW splash red for 2 Fires of Undeath and a Geistflame. The only rare I had in the deck was an Isolated Chapel. 3 of my other 5 rares were crappy curses, but I still ended up 3-1. As long as you have quality commons and uncommons you should be fine.
I went wit ha W/G deck. I opened two copies of Gather the Townsfolk, an Increasing Devotion, two Doomed Travellers, FOUR copies of the White cat (Can you say foil time? ;D), Parallel Lives, and three copies of Young Wolf. I had to go GW

I was watching two of my friends play....it was a LONG game (gone to time in game two) it looked for sure that it was going to end up 1-0-1. the board was completely stagnat with both players gaining tons of life (each at 25-30) on turn 4 of extra time the active player asks the non active player how many cards he had in his library (17) he then taps out all 10 lands and flashes back Increasing Confusion makes him mill 18 and passes turn.
they still tied but it was a heck of a come-out-of-nowhere game win

Sunday was better, went 4-0-2 (w-l-d). I had the Falkenrath Aristocrat, and Reaper of the Abyss as the big bombs. Finished game 2 of round 3 by casting Brimstone Volley and flashing back Increasing Vengeance.
My best pool was Vault of the Archangel, Devil's Play, Falkenrath Noble and some great red removal: Wrack with Madness (awesome), Fires of Undeath, Giestflame...
Midnight Guard turned out to be an awesome 3 drop as he can attack into those pesky 2/2 Zombies and untap second main after you drop your next threat.
Lingering Souls was also great at driving my opponent mad.
Niblis of the Urn was fantastic at pushing damage through and attacking into the decks that splash white or blue just to get some flying defense in. Thanks for the heads up on that guy Kevin!
