I do disagree with there being "A" dragon in the set. I do understand that dragons are very heavy in the "darker" aspect. Watch DragonHeart, or Dragonslayer (1981). As for the Ruinator, I really don't want to play against anyone that opens this in limited, it's going to be hard enough to deal with once, let alone being cast over and over from the yard. That makes it Mythic, and it's a blue zombie which were described as the "thinking" side of the zombie's tribe.
Unfortunately we won't be seeing Frankenstein's Monster. /shakes fist Damn you reserved list.
The black zombie token maker feels very mythic, putting an army of "old school" zombies into play to swarm your opponents is awesome, and it comes back for more.
The demon, is amazing. If something dies in a turn, you get to kill something else. This will make combat more interesting as regardless you are going to kill something else at the end of turn.
I have to disagree, at least in part, with your thought here. Just because they don't fit the subtheme of "classic" horror in no way means that they are not horror-themed cards. Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the Wolfman, etc., all have been done before. There is nothing particularly exciting about them. Cult horror and things such as the Lovecraft mythos (which has been cited as a major influence of the set) are much more interesting to me, both as a person and a Magic player.
Here's to hoping for Cthulu and Hastur cards. Or, if you like, Ghatanothoa, who frankly scares the crap out of me.
Le Chat has come to accept the set as though it were a 'standard' Magic setting, with a Gothic overlay. It's like what happens when the circus comes to town: You gets lots of people wearing the T-shirts and hats, but it's still a town underneath it all, with all the characters that inhabit it. So, the dragon is part of the 'home' setting, much the same way townsfolk are.
The alternate explanation is that one of the planeswalkers brought him in from another plane. *shrug*
Of all the Classic horror movies -- thinking the Lon Chaney / Bela Lugosi line of films here -- we sadly won't be seeing anything of The Mummy. LC expects that the Pharaoh in M12 was as close as we'll come for a while.

Mythics could have been a bit better, but I can't complain that they don't fit. Dragons in Western European horror... yeah, cause that's TOTALLY weird amirite?
The fact that the set is top-down does not indicate that every single card is going to be top-down. That's asking way too much.

There are two types of people in this world: people who think that countermagic is the most powerful effect in the game and people who aren't morons.
My color is Purple. I value diversity, smashed color pies and obsolete Inquest articles. At my best, I can redefine MTG in a new and wonderful way. At my worst, I can end up as an Unhinged joke. My symbol is not defined. My enemies are 5 old and bureaucratic angry colors.

Both PW's feel very in theme for this set.
172 cards to go, this can only get better.
