Whoever said 9 fatpacks was a to small of a sample size is crazy 72 packs isnt a big enough size surely you should of hit more than 2 mythics thats a very bad experience.
That's kind of what I was thinking. It's the equivalent number of packs to two booster boxes. Now, I figured that the quality card yield wouldn't be as good as in two booster boxes. It should be completely random, without the pseudo-predictability that comes with booster boxes; you can't assume the same sort of rare sheet collation found in a box when it's eighteen clumps of four packs each. But, as stated numerous times in this thread, random is random and the whole thing seemed oddly unlucky.
Why did you open 9 fat packs anyway. (180 for 56 packs, vs 200 for 64 if you would just got 2 boxes, and probaly would got 7-12 Mythics there)
I actually got (what I thought was) a deal on the fat packs. I paid $21.50 per fat pack with free shipping from a reputable retailer. It was $193.50 for 72 packs (and the storage boxes, D20s, and 360 lands) vs. $180 for two booster boxes. That was my reasoning, and I don't regret it, really.
My paranoid side, however, started to wonder around fat pack #3 if there was a way to map cards in a case of fat packs or something, and the dealer had decided to even the score for the low price I was paying :). The packs and boxes all appeared to be legitimately factory sealed though, so that likely is just paranoid rubbish.
The last Fat Pack I bought Was Zendikar, and I have bought one for each set previous to that, starting with Ravnica. I have to say my luck is great with Fat Packs, I get lots of good rares and Mythics. Though, I have to say its my wife's luck. She doesn't play magic and I think her want for me to have good cards allows her select great packs. When I pull packs, I get terrible cards, but ones she buys for me are awesome!
Are the dice that come in the fat packs random? I've bought a fatpack and got one color then bought one a month or so later and gotten another color. The two SOM we bought both came with red dice.

Yes. Our FLGS did a "Fat Pack Sealed" event for the Release, and so the dice were all over the place, and they are totally random.

Along with many mods, I've moved shop over to MTGNexus. Come check us out!
I use to buy fat packs, but i have not bought one since wwk. I That fatpack if i an not mistaken stunk worser than a skunk. No jace and a jank mythic wrexial of the risen deep
I buy the Fat Pack, occasionally if I miss the prerelease and just wants some trade bait.
I usually get at least one Mythic. This time I got, Venser, Elspeth, Steel Hellkite, Darksteel Juggs, Semblance Anvil, Sunblast Angel. Pretty lucky if you ask me.
Although I normally have good luck with fat packs, opened 2 SOM so far and haven't gotten any good cards(but personally i thinks that's more because of the lack of really good cards in the set).
I just bought a SoM Fat Pack and pulled Elspeth Tirel, Ratchet Bomb, and Molten-Tail Masticore as my money cards. Certainly worth it for me. I also pulled Hand of the Praetors and Putrefax. So I was pretty happy with it.
Fat Packs have the same chance as a box or boosters. A friend of mine bought a fat pack and got a Venser. Another friend of mine opened a box and got a Venser, Elspeth, and Koth. I opened a box and got no planeswalkers. A friend of mine opened a box and got no planeswalkers. We went halfsies on a box and got no planeswalkers. We are very unlucky.
I'm going on record right now and stating that before the end of 2012 we will see foil dual lands in booster packs (The real, Alpha dual lands). You can quote me on that.
I always buy a fat pack when a new set comes out. I like getting the lands, box, and, my favorite, the spindown life counter.
The most recent fat pack, the Scars of Mirrodin fat pack, held a Geth, Koth, a foil Myr Reservoir and a foil Razorverge Thicket.
My Worldwake fat pack had Jace 2.0.
My Zendikar fat pack had a foil Sorin.
Those are just the highlights I remember. I'm certain the other fat packs aren't memorable because of the contents. It's all just random. It's not some conspiracy. Just my $.02.
Oh, and I have to throw this in there too: 9 fat packs?

LOL... as I explained, I was getting the fatpacks for a discount. That discount made it so that the price per-pack was roughly the same as buying booster boxes, plus I got the storage boxes I needed.
i dunno, ive been happy with my last two fat packs (m11 and scars), got 2x nantuko shade, foil temple bell, foil vengeful archon, Foil mindslaver, Geth (same pack!!) and KOTH. sold koth for $45 and im gonna get another scars fat pack with the money.

Ahhh, gotcha there bud. Missed the entire second page! I found your post, and if I was looking to spend that much money on Magic (buying packs), and I could of had the deal you had, I'd have jumped at it too.
Hopefully you get better pulls next time dude.

Ok so lessons to be learned from this thread, if you didn't already know these things:
Fat Packs are not as consistent as Boxes...never ever buy 9 fat packs instead of two boxes.
Random booster is random.
Don't hang all your hopes on "money cards." The best cards in this set are cheap and you should be happy about that. there is nothing in this set that cannot be had as a single for under $40. Go buy singles on the cheap now instead of sealed product so in 3 months everyone can complain about how it's so hard to find a ratchet bomb at a decent price cause no one opened any SoM cause there weren't enough "money cards" in the set.
Side note: I opened a foil Venser and an Elspeth Tirel in one pack today...too bad I couldn't just have bought that pack instead of the box it came in. lol
