Here's my post from the rumor thread, to begin the discussion:
Clearly, it wants to be compared to Terra Stomper, which was just printed, and hasn't seen any play.
Both have trample. Few players would argue that Hydra is a more supported creature type than Beast. Terra Stomper is less rare. Terra Stomper can't be countered.
With 0 creatures in play:
Terra Stomper - 3GGG
Khalni Hydra - GGGGGGGG
With 1 creature in play:
Terra Stomper - 3GGG
Khalni Hydra - GGGGGGG
With 2 creatures in play:
Terra Stomper - 3GGG
Khalni Hydra - GGGGGG
With 3 creatures in play:
Terra Stomper - 3GGG
Khalni Hydra - GGGGG
With 4 creatures in play:
Terra Stomper - 3GGG
Khalni Hydra - GGGG
With 5+ creatures in play.... you don't need more men, you need Overrun!
Conclusion: Terra Stomper is the better card when you have 0, 1, 2, and most of the time, 3 green critters. With 4 green critters, the Hydra has a lower but more awkward mana cost, but can be countered.
In other words... The only situation in which you would rather have Khalni Hydra than Terra Stomper is when you have EXACTLY 4 green creatures in play AND your opponent doesn't have a counterspell.
So it's worse than a 50c rare.
That said, I like the art, and the design isn't bad. I just wish it wasn't so fail.
Not to mention when playing a mono green deck, most often those green critters you have could be mana dudes, in which case Terra stomper is better even more often.

Like I spend all this effort to come back in time, but like everyones like "take better pictures" like time travel isnt hard enough.
I hate when people change their avatar's. That's how I identify most people, not by names.
Yeah, it's another "oh, so great, so broken" Talara's Battalion which saw, like, zero play. It forces you to overextend. Immensely. Overextending is bad, so it forces you to play bad, so it's bad, pure logic. Besides, it's completely useless in two+ colour decks since it's mana cost is immensely prohibiting. Another jank mythic, so let's for the next $50 Jace/Baneslayer-type rare since vendors will have to make their profit somehow.
I have no idea why wizards made this card like this. If it just had the extra text of: Draw a card, it would be great and possibly beat terra stomper.
As it is now, it is a very, very badly designed card.
Any card that needs other cards to work will NEVER make it into T1 decks, unless it says: "I win".
Just horrible.... could have been so much better..
Ummmm...Frogmite says hello... Oh and Myr Enforcer too, but I suppose those cards were not in T1 decks right.:p
I intend to piggy-back it onto avenger of zendikar in my GW eldrazi deck. Im gonna play a 5/5, 5-7 plants tokens, and an 8/8 with trample in one turn (usually around T4 or T5).
1.) great card in right deck. (right deck may not be top tier standard)
2.) if it was more powerful / cost less people would say it's overpowered and too good for a mythic rarity, and complain about how much it'll cost
3.) it has Amazing flavor
This is one of the best mythics, printed as a mythic. STOP COMPLAINING.
No. It's not playable, not for a serious deck anyways. I'm honestly starting to wonder if anything from Rise of the Eldrazi is going to see serious tournament play. Everything seems like fodder for Timmy casual gaming.
It has almost no flavour. It doesn't even do what Hydras do (use and/or grow heads). It could have been any other creature type, and it would have made more sense.
I asked if it was playable. If I was complaining, it would be obvious, trust me. Like I said, the art's cool, and the design is alright.
Besides, complaining isn't against the rules here. And if it was, you aren't a mod, so stop pretending you are, thanks.

UW control will flirt with Emrakrul over Iona, and might just run All is Dust over Martial Coup. Actually this set as Spoiled so far gives alot of tools Control. It's not like Jund, Vamps, Eldrazi green really really really needed much more help.
I suppose your right, I liked the feel of the card when I first saw it and it's really not that hard in green with token producers to get enough creatures out for it to be stupidly cheap or even free. However the only time that that actually makes it better than Terrastomper or something similar would be if you managed to have multiples in hand.
Going 1st turn Llanowar/Arbor Elf, 2nd turn Elvish Archdruid, 3rd turn Bestial Menace/Wolfbriar Elemental(kicked twice) and then being able to play out 3 Hydras(4 if you went 2nd) on 4th turn is insanely cool in concept but in all likely hood you'd only have a single copy in which case there's a lot of better options.
It's sad but I guess it's another casual deck only mythic.
True, the art is pretty
It'll be fun in limited, but as a mythic it fails, mythics shuold be big fun/wierd cards that have no place in most actually tournament decks

Remember Figure of Destiny? That card was the inspiration for the level-up mechanic. -Wizards
Accept the truth.
I dont think you guys are thinking about this right. Terra Stomper is something that you have to cast instead of something else. The Hydra has "affinity" and therefore can be played for free in token or elf decks so you can essentially play two win cons at once.
I suppose your right, I liked the feel of the card when I first saw it and it's really not that hard in green with token producers to get enough creatures out for it to be stupidly cheap or even free.
Oh, for sure. But even if you build your deck around it, and manage to power it out turn 4 with a good hand, that means you have a couple 1/1s and an 8/8 with no protection of any kind. What deck can't immediately deal with it for 2 mana? Or maybe late game, yeah you can cast it for only :symg:.... but if you have 6 green dudes in play, why haven't you won?
you aren't a mod, so stop pretending you are, thanks.
I just hate people disliking any card right off the bat if the card doesn't make the card in top tier playability. It's still a great card. a potentially free 8/8 trampler is always great in my book.
Now do I see this card as playable. in the right deck, definiatly. Primacrux loves it. however in standard, no at least not without more support.
A heavy mono-color card that relies on a conditional to make it viable is always hard to find a way in alot of decks.
I personally think this card has quite a bit of flavor. More than most rares in the set.
It seems they are making a lot of bombs this year. Since M10 the near unplayable bombs have exploded everywhere. Maybe this has something to do with EDH becoming sanctioned and they are already designing cards with this is mind. Maybe this Nemisis business will turn out to be their official version of EDH.
As for the "playable" option. No, i doubt we'll see it much in Standard Net decks. But some tier 2 decks will do their darndest to play cards they like.
I could see him as a one of in mono green summoner's trapdecks.
It's the definition of mythic. Big stylish creature with a casual built around me feel. I remember 13 years ago, when i opnend Force of Nature in a 5th Edition booster, my jaw dropped: 8/8, four green mana symbols, what the hell this was great. But causals are overloaded with goodies these days...
What's the problem with this card? Yes its unplayable in constructed tournaments, but i dont have a problem with unplayable mythics
I would also compare it to Emperor Crocodile. Undercosted fatty that needs creatures on the table vs fatty you can't play unless you have creatures on the table. Both suck. But deserve a place. In limited, Hydra is good.
Mythics should not be considered in limited at all.
AT ALL.
That is what rares are for.
It is when the 6 mana 8/8 is uncounterable, splashable and always costs 6 while the "4 mana 8/8" won't always cost 4, is probably just overkill when it costs less(you've got 5 or more creatures so why not play Eldrazi Monument, Overrun or Garruk Wildspeaker(for his overrun ability) and win instead of playing a single 8/8 creatures) and when it costs more can be just plain bad(after Day of Judgement or Earthquake it suddenly costs too much to cast), not to mention the fact that it's completely unsplashable.
you seem to be forgetting what color this creature is.....green is excelent at getting you mana fast.
with only 2 overgrown battlements, the hydra only costs 2. throw in a simple llanowar elves, and you've got a free 8/8 trampler.
plussss.......with all of these 0/1 tokens flying around, it will be rather cheep to play without sacing any tokens.

What an insightful post. Spam warning.
You can do the same thing with Terra Stomper, and you'd get better value out of say a Wolfbriar Elemental kicked twice.
My Sales Post!
That's six mana. Which is the casting cost of a Terra Stomper. So you could just play that.
