See, and I've been working on designs for my casual vampire deck. This is a good omen for change, change we can believe in. Vampires are winners in my book.
EDH, on the other hand, is more like a monster truck rally. It's more about the spectacle than the race, the games go long, and it's not usually clear who's in the lead until there's only one truck left.*
Single player EDH is like two guys smacking each other with pillows... until one of them pulls out a shotgun.
I seriously love this card! But then again, I'm a casual player, which is what this card is designed for. I'm a bit annoyed it's mythic though, cos that means it'll be expensive, or at least more expensive than the average $2 I pay for playsets rares.
This and Queen of Ants are just really cool cards. I think that WotC is doing a great job so far with the "new design" of X edition. The only thing I don't like is the name changing of things. I prefer play over cast and I seriously prefer 'comes into play' over 'enter the battlefield'.
But nothing than kudos for this card!
It's the prerelease card so there is really no way that the card is going to be overcosted, especially since most people think it is jank anyways...I'd say we are looking at a $1-3 card, just like Malfegor became after Conflux release. However, I do think this card has some potential in the right deck. Honestly, a 5/4 flyer for 4 is really efficient, the fact that the buffs stack is worthwhile, and if they print some lower mana cost vampires, I honestly think this thing has a chance. Monoblack is getting very good cards from this set, at least as spoiled thus far, and I think it has a chance at being decent.
Edit: I do think that the mythic rarity is dead wrong though. This thing really doesn't feel mythic.
This leads me to believe that we will see low cost vampires in M10 because if it was made in nonconsideration of other blocks, then they wouldn't worry about vampires elsewhere.
So I would expect some low cost, newly-turned vampires, or an aura enchantment that makes a creature a vampire in addition to some other bonus (A variant of Vampiric Embrace?).
If it weren't for the fact that M10 had to be designed a while ago, I would wonder if this was a blatent attempt to buy in on the Twilight frenzy.
I see here that the core set is going to encourage the mono-color strategy, which has always been popular when magic was in its early days, or players in their early days of magic exposure, like how I used to be.
Something about this card and the new thrust of m10 is making me feel nostalgic, back in the days when the stack was much simpler (wait...it wasn't a stack), and simple creatures that made us smile when we crack them out of the pack

What we're doing here is akin to taking the text of Moby Dick, locating specific words therein, rearranging them to create a passage from Fight Club, and concluding from this evidence that Tyler Durden is based on Ahab.

i love it ..i hope mono-colored decks actually become a viable option in T2.
Recent discussions here and elsewhere have made it clear that there seems to be a group of players who consider blue and control synonymous, as if they somehow started playing a game with four identical and "bad" colors that do nothing interesting because they just "turn men sideways" and then true, glorious blue, the only thinking person's color.
EDH decks
Marath, Will of the Wild
Sygg, River Cutthroat
Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer
Marchesa, the Black Rose
Monoblack deck with 8 Borderposts and 4 Illiana Vess could be awsome
If you are going to throw in that many borderpost, why not use some black/red or some black/blue spells while you are at it? Soul manipulation would be nice as well as terminate. Hell, I would consider Unscythe, Killer of Kings just because it is such massive pump with first strike that can get your vampires more minions if it kills something.
I love this card...I'm a collector of sorts of vampires ad with this and the common vampire it makes it more likely to build a solid vampire deck if we keep seeing more like this.
And its about time we saw more vampires since the alara style guide made it seem like grixis was crawling with them, and then we get 2 n the whole block

Never really thought of it that way. Pity they won't see standard together for too long with Zendikar coming up at the end of the year.
But yeah, it'll be scary as hell for a time. Hmm. Maybe we can finally have Vampire-tribe decks at last. No, not maybe, but definitely! No need to rely so much on changelings ever (except Mutavault)! And speaking of changelings...
Although the 1BBB in vampire lord's cost might make it difficult fitting those two together, but we got ways

I really like this card. I don't like how Wizards tends to use the same tribes over and over again, and I think it's good that they're trying to use Vampires as a tribe, because they're far more interesting than Zombies and haven't really been explored very much tribally, other than Baron Sengir. Also, I really like the flavor of the card, because Vampires are stronger at nighttime. I can't wait to make a Vampire tribal deck. I just have to hope that people won't be running Undead Slayer.

If WotC decides to start making vampires a staple tribe then this card has a lot of potential. I have never been a real big fan of having to play with the top card of your library revealed but this has a lot of power. Im not sure if it deserves the Mythic rare status though.
Haha! I love that you were attentive enough to catch Glimmervoid, but not to catch that the subject of the photo is totally not a dude.

This could be good if Terramorphic expanse or some other decent way to shuffle when the top card is -not- black exists in m10. Panoramas could be used but are not ideal. The key (as always) is that the card needs to do something else decent (IE; not be a wasted card) besides shuffling.
Edit to add: Chameleon Collossus, while being a vampire, is probably not wanted in a deck with this, because you dont want any non-black cards other than the ones that comprise your mana base. I think this wants a mono black deck or one in which all the non land cards are black (mono, hybrid or gold).

On the mythic Rare thing, I seem to recall a lot of business around making cards that are only good in *some* (or 1) decks mythic because they are flavourful, but will not become pricey and they will not clutter up your rare slot in other boosters. If I have the choice between cracking a Vampire Nocturnus very rarely, or only somewhat rarely, I vote for very rarely.
On the other hand, if I can crack a new *** more often because I am not going to crack the vamp, yay.
Malfegor is a great example: I am glad he exists, it is neat that he is part of the world, I never want him in a draft booster. Or, the Ravnica Guild Head legends, they would have been much better as Mythics. So it seems to me, that he is mythic BECAUSE he is cool and only marginally usable.
I am not sure I would want painter's servant here. I mean really, what good is he without the CC or Vampire Nocturnus? Not much. I think I would rather just build MBC if the supporting tools are there, or perhaps a grixis build with 4-6 Borderposts that help with fixing AND increase the likelyhood of black on top, cards like Vein Drinker perhaps, Terminate and agony warp for removal, some discard, etc. Probably terramorphic expanse to fix colors, and shuffle when you need the vampire to be 'on' and u get a land on top. Could be decent I think but it depends too heavily on what other tools for it are in m10 and what the metagame looks like post m10.

Most playable vampires fly anyway, and its a mythic slot wasted on on rare equivalent card.
